- On today's program I present my Demon Days album review and analysis. This record is complex, layered with meaning and I do my best to unravel what it all means but at just over 51 minutes long, there's a lot to unpack and understand. Keep in mind, this is just opinion and there are many different ways to interpret the music.
Demon Days was the creative collaboration between Damon Albarn, artist Jamie Hewlett and producer Danger Mouse. Originally released in 2005, Demon Days by Gorillaz remains their best selling album, with over 8 million copies sold world wide. It spawned such hits as "Feel Good, Inc." "Dare" "El Mañana" and "Dirty Harry" It also featured a wide array of guest musicians and singers including MF Doom, De La Soul, Bootie Brown, Neneh Cherry, Roots Manuva, Martina Topley-Bird, Shaun Ryder, Rosie Wilson, Ike Turner, Dennis Hopper and the London Community Gospel Choir. #demondays #gorillaz #vinylrewind

About Feel Good Inc.,
While I think that everyone should have their own interpretation of a song, I’ve found one that I think fits the concept of the album better
I think it is about the ‘manufactured’ music of the 2000s (e.g N-Sync, Backstreet Boys etc.). It mentions Motown which was known as the ‘hit factory’. As well as this, music is meant to make us feel good, so it having an ‘inc.’ on the end means that the music industry *is* feel good inc. Also in De La Soul’s verse, they say ‘with your sound you kill the inc.’ and I think this could be referring to how if we put out genre-bending music that still is catchy and makes it into the charts (e.g this song) then ‘Feel Good Inc.’ could be stopped
Btw I didn’t come up with this, Polyphonic did.
TL:DR: Feel Good Inc. is the music industry
"with your sound you kill the inc" my interpretation is that it is saying to not conform and by being genuine you break the machine, polluting it with free will waking ppl up to do the same (the cycle repeats round and round like a windmill)
@@TheHustlingFox the windmills actually represents wind mill de la soul represents big industries especially music industry in the music vid everyone is wasted drunk and high that they can’t get up and 2d is warning them that they are prisoners trying to wake them up but in the end two is silents by the music industry
we need plastic beach.
for sure.
YESSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!
WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF THE PLASTIC BEACH
Not so much really
eh
When your favorite youtuber makes a 42 minute review about an album from your favorite band :)
which is your favorite album of theirs?
bananarama1712 Plastic Beach
Ah yes, 42: the answer to life, the universe and everything. Fits this video perfectly
I appreciate just how much work has gone into this - yet another great review of an amazing album.
It’s so frustratingly hard to try to order and pick a favorite Gorillaz song. Almost every single song has at one point been a “favorite.” However, I really do think Empire Ants takes the cake for my favorite. Just.... nothing can top the serene feeling and the thoughts of being crushed underneath the weight of the world. It always makes me feel uneasily peaceful. It evokes so many emotions and has helped me through many tough times. The only other song that has touched me as much as Empire Ants is Demon Days. That’s why I have to place Empire Ants at #1
100% Agree with empire ants being number one. I say another one of my favourites is cloud of unknowing for the same reason as empire ants. It's so peaceful and Bobby womacks vocals really fit the song
+1 vote for empire ants. Definitely helped me through things many times.
Bruh I’ve been looking for so long for an analysis on the meaning of Demon Days, this was so clean and what I was looking for, Thanks so much!
Seeing 13 by Blur in the background made me happy, as it was an album I suggested to you during one of your live-streams a while back.
He should definitely review it! That album is crazy good! One of Blur's finest moments for sure
Shaun Ryder Performing Live is my Spirit Animal.
He is a 24 hour party person after all
You forgot the to mention Kids With Guns chorus - the best Albarn has ever written: ‘and they’re turning us into monsters’
Gives me chills every time. I love that line to death.
This album definitely sounds like night music, even till this day it reminds me of going to Houston to Mexico at midnight & driving down to the border throughout the night. I used to bring this album with me at 11 years old with my Walkman CD player & listen to it the whole way there. Brings back great memories.
El Mañana is also my favorite song, this song really hits home to me. I used to spend summers in Mexico & I would hear police sirens all throughout the night & the fact that it’s called “El Mañana” makes it even better. That’s the most nostalgic song to me.
You pulled me into the visual of it all. You should write a book. I can feel the warm weather turning into a cooler night. I can see the road. And I can hear this album int he middle of all of that. Wow, you should really get into writing/blogging/something written.
@@JNava Jesus, as someone who live in Houston and loves this album and El Mañana especially this hit me like a brick
I really appreciate the amount of effort and analysis into your videos, im always so excited to see them pop up in my feed! Honestly you’re one of my favorite channels on UA-cam, keep up the hard work man!
Hey, good job man! A fantastic Gorillaz analysis that delves into so much detail! :)
i am severly confused, why does this video only have 5000 views? This video was really well put together... I really want a plastic beach analysis!!! Thats my favourite album of all time, and i think it is deserving of this level of analysis
It should have 5 000 000. Today.
Last living souls, kids with guns, El manana, feel good Inc. Are masterpieces, in that order
This is the album i grew up with.... I had been listening to this album for as long as i remember, and whenever they ask me which is my favorite album i always! say Demon Days.
And now that i get an analysis on how it was created and what it represents, i understand why i turn out they i am rigth now, and why i love this album, and i will love it until the day i out of this world
Chears Vinyl Rewind this was an eye opening experience and a really nice video :D Thank you
One of the greatest album of 2000’s
This Record is getting me through college. It was my introduction to the band, over fifteen years ago. I heard Feel Good Inc. and only listened to that as a kid. Few years later, I found that disc again sitting in my sock drawer. I dug it out and listened to the rest. It took me years to finally open up to every song, and I cannot skip a single song on this album. It feels comforting to listen to, despite the dreary nature of the music. I love the lore of the band, and all the talents coming together to make a band that doesn't even exist! The band's artstyle even inspired me to get into animation and graphic design. I'm still looking to collect every album, I think I'm almost done, and now they've got a new album possibly on the rise. Been an awful few years but, Coming back to Demon Days felt like having a bucket of ice water dumped on a hot day.
Excellent review, It's good to see someone giving a more deeper perspective in the themes of the music. I wish you the best in the this shaky year of 2020.
Every planet we reach is dead is the best song on the album
I personally prefer o green world

Hey everyone, thank you for watching. Admittedly this video took much longer to make than I wanted it to but there was just so much to decipher in the music and lyrics. My first cut was longer than the actual album which was a first for me but still, even at its current length, this is my longest review to date.
Vinyl Rewind awesome video!
Great review. Can you please review Blur - 13 or TGTBTQ - Merrie Land.
Dude I'm a massive fan of your channel and music. And I must say your a underrated due to vinyl and music history is kind of a obscure topic but I hope you and you channel continue to prosper.
From Mark
Vinyl Rewind stop calling them the gorillaz. just GORILLAZ
Thank you!
this was the first album I ever remember really listening to as a kid. I was in elementary school and my mom got me the cd because I loved whenever the music video for Feel Good Inc came on TV because I thought the animated characters looked cool. I remember listening to it a lot as a kid and liking it, but never really understanding what any of it meant. now I'm 24 and I still find myself coming back to this album and understanding it more and more as I get older. definitely one of my favorite albums ever, thank you for this great analysis!
This is such a beautiful and in-depth analysis...I've always known this album was something special, but this made me appreciate it even more. It's just so well crafted both musically and lyrically (especially Feel Good Inc.. That song truly deserves all the success it has, it's just brilliant!). Didn't really pay attention to its autobiographical elements until now...but it makes sense since Damon has stated how much his past relationship with Justine Frischmann as well as his heroin experience deeply affected him. I mean, he wrote a whole Blur album about that (I can see it in the background...does this mean you will review it some time? 13 is such an underappreciated gem outside of the Blur fandom). Despite all of this, the album has very universal themes overall and you can relate to and feel moved by it no matter the background you're coming from (and I say this as a Lebanese/Italian young woman with a particularly dull lifestyle. Each one of us has their own demons to face, it's the quintessential human condition). The beauty of Gorillaz is how they manage to be playful and serious and cheerful and dark all at once...while also creating this sense of togetherness by incorporating such a varied range of sounds and influences. And most of the time all of this happens so naturally. Such a free-spirited project. I guess being in a traditional four-piece band was a bit limiting to Damon, despite the fact that Blur were still able to pull off many genres and ideas, as proved by their eclectic discography. I think Gorillaz is the project he's most comfortable with, being it very loose in a sense and allowing him to collaborate with different people from past and present generations. The current Song Machine proves that it is possible to create something interesting and cohesive out of chaos and uncertainty. That's the power of Gorillaz!
Sorry for the long paragraph, but I really wanted to express how much I loved this video. Very insightful and stimulating, the way you explain things with passion is truly contagious!
I’d recommend checking out some of the more recent DARE performances. During the performance you included in the video Shaun was incredibly drunk and absolutely not “there”. In the video you can also see he’s even eating a lollipop while on stage.
In more recent performances (where he is sober) he’s able to give a performance closer to what is heard on the album.
This was amazing. Thank you for your wonderful review. I was 12 in 2005-06 and obsessed with this album. It really affected me and made me think like nothing else had before. I still think it's a breathtaking work and the best album of the 2000s.
You should do kid a for its 20th anniversary, that being said great job with this reveiw/inspection of this classic, one of my favorite albums of all time. Again great job 👍
Amazing review! been listening to this albums for 15 years since my days at college, it's quite meaninful to me, but now i see the meaning is even deeper. Love your videos, got to the channel from the Paul is Dead Conspiracy video and been a fan since! love the style and the timeless quality the set, photography and color brings. jeep up the good work! Thanks a lot!
November Has Come was the first time I ever heard MF DOOM, aside from bits of his music being played on Adult Swim bumpers.
I’m so glad I found this channel. Your content is awesome!
Bro how do this have only 44k views, that’s so unfair you clearly put so much work into this and it’s really well made.
I am ecstatic at the quality of this review! This album is a masterpiece and a timeless classic, it’s sounds have been with me since I was a kid. It really is special, thanks for this great review.
Subbed, and everyone else should, too.
This review brought me back to when I first listened to this album. It’s so good, and now I appreciate it even more!
Ive been in love with this album since I was a kid but never thought about the meaning of the songs. Well... I did wonder and had a feeling it was deep, but had no idea. I was more focused on the animated music videos and amused when the guy says "a mountain called Monkey". But as an adult when I can appreciate music more now, its really good to know the meaning behind the songs. It gives the songs more impact and emotion. Great video.
Loving the way you articulate the lyrics and the passion you give into your reviews! More album reviews
Such a fantastic review and analysis! I know it takes a lot of time, effort, and energy to pump out content like this, but it's wonderful. I've listened to this album countless times since I picked up the CD when it came out over 15 years ago. It really spoke to me on many levels, and it's great to see someone break down the themes that I may not necessarily be able to articulate, but can definitely feel from the tracks.
Keep up the amazing work, Eric! Cheers from Dallas, Texas.
This was such a great review! Demon Days has been part of my life and especially childhood for as long as I listen to music, it was one of the first albums I remember repeatedly listening to when I was like 5 or 6. So as a kid I never really thought about the lyrics of course and what they meant, and later they still seem so cryptic. But I think you absolutely hit the nail on the head with your analysis. Thank you for making me understand this album more, to see it as a concept album, and thanks for reminding me of how much of a masterpiece it truly is
Thank you for this video, this enhanced my already intense love for this record
I can really feel the effort you put into making this video. The amount of depth you provide in your content is really great. Thank you for making such awesome videos. I would like to see what you think of plastic beach and the progression the band took since 2005
To me Feel Good Inc was about being trapped in your vices to feel good and not face reality. Noodles part is about a sense of hope or a way to break out, but then to go back to Feel Good since it's easier to stay how you are then change.
November has come is now more heartbreaking than ever before. Rip MF DOOM
This review turns up and I'm happy, I'm feeling glad.
Edit: Review Blur - 13, one of my fave as a young 20 something.
I have this album on vinyl and CD. I cherish this album, growing up with it, it has become one of my favorite albums of all time.
I especially love that the whole album is like “nighttime” from dusk to the sun rising, especially as a person with super bad insomnia, I can say the themes of the song math pretty well with the feelings of not being able to sleep all night, the initial fear of trying to sleep, followed by dark and hopeless feelings which turn into regrets and personal mistakes when going into a sleep-deprived hallucinogenic feeling which gets super intense until finally you see the sun start to peek out from the horizon
Vinyl Rewind dropping knowledge. Amazing research!
I love these in-depth reviews. Thank you for the quality content!
Such a great interpretation of it. Really made me see the album in a whole different light
This is one of the recommendations that I’m glad I got. New sub! 🖖🏾👽
Thanks to this video I appreciate more one of my favorite albums of all time. Thank you ❤
Absolutely fantastic deep dive, really glad this came up in my recommendations. Keep up the great work dude!
Where did you get demon days on vinyl? I thought the 2005 version was rare and the newer one was red transparent?
There was another pressing in 2018 and a picture disc pressing last year
I got one from Best Buy
@@mineingmo I picked up the picture disc and it sounds amazing good. not like a picture disc at all. there is a locked groove issue with some of the reissues like the red one i believe.
@@jasonnewby yeah I have one of the new ones and it is warped and won’t stop skipping. It is kind of bent but I am worried to play it now.
@@makenzietarr3983 i also picked up another one from VMP but it has the gaps between tracks. the picture disc does not.
What a great show! Your presentation skills are clear and concise with a real ability to connect with your audience. Well, you certainly did with me thank you.
Goodness knows how much time goes into each show, as you offer us tons of information. Truly excellent stuff thank you. If I want to know all about an album, along with any useful information that would assist me in getting the vibe… I’d straight away look up your channel.
Brilliant work, well researched and very easy to listen to.
Warm regards, Dave x
Being a 13 year old, I am so glad that I discovered Gorillaz as their music is just so emotional and bomb! :D
Wow, I just listened to this album for the first time yesterday. Good time for this video to drop.
I love your style. The set, the suit, the hair, I love your whole gig.
Fantastic review as usual! One point though - Maseo? Surely not, I always assumed the laughter in "Feel Good Inc" is a sample from the comedy actor Sid James, in fact, it's so unmistakable if it isn't him then it's an impersonation! I can't imagine anyone in the US making that assumption though, as Sid is unknown there.
Спасибо за труды! Теперь мне ещё понятнее, в чём феноменальная популярность этого альбома.
I really love to find videos like this
Amazing quality and analysis, you deserve far more attention my friend.
Wow, what an album and what a great review!
What a freakin insightful review 👏🏻
This is great! I've been waiting so long for this. Thank you!
Man, what a fantastic analysis. Kudos, dude.
Fantastic album and breakdown.
Super awesome video. I've been pondering bits of this album for over a decade and you totally aced it. Keep up the amazing work man!
Waited too long for this video, Patience is worth it.
Man I love this guys presentation. Undercredited!
42 min? My man love Gorillaz without a doubt
Love your videos always cool when you upload
Just found you guys. You definitely deserve way more subs 👍👍 subbed 👍👍
This is one of those albums where I don’t have a favourite song like the wall or American idiot I just soak up the whole thing every time
I don't think "Last Living Souls" being about people specifically getting lost in digital media is quite accurate. The internet was *just* becoming mainstream when this came out. The iPhone wasn't even out yet. Media in *general* might be more accurate, but it always struck me as an expression of the general apocalyptic feeling during the W Bush/Blair years (which included worries of media overconsumption, war, and the environmental fears that recur throughout the album).
I either agree with or didn't think about the whole rest of it
IIRC he prefaced that description by saying "observed through a modern lens" or words to that effect.
@@Uber_Hans still while valid I feel like its hard to make it accurate if ignoring the historical context.
An analysis like this for plastic beach would be incredible!!
aw yeah! I'm glad to see this epic review.
Great review! Always loved this album, and it’s really great to see an in-depth review.
I’m glad this is 40 minutes long :)
Wow you just flexed on us bruh, what a fantastic video, give this all the Oscars.
Love your videos! Thank you!
I SEE THINK TANK AND 13 IN THE BACKGROUND. YES PLEASE.
HELL YEAH WE WANT A REVIEW
Great video, this is probaly the album of my life!
Feel Good Inc. changed how I saw music.
Just to clarify some of those quotes actually was from an interview called we are the jury
your job are amazing, man
Loves from Brazil
It is interesting how his use of words to describe the lyrics and music creates imagery of what the album maybe trying to portray. It is not at all distracting but flows in with the words and jump-cuts appropriately with an excerpt of the audio/clip.
I know this probably won’t be seen but the refers to a lover could be Justine Frischmann he broke up with her and then made the album 13 which then inevitably lead to Jamie and Damon meeting which then started gorillaz
You can sense in his music how that past relationship deeply affected him, both artistically and on a human level. He was madly in love with her. So sad how it went downhill, but hey at least it inspired such wonderful music and they both seem to be at peace now. I'm happy for them
Every planet clearly has the lover angle going but to me it also gave me the vibe of reaching out, never to receive an answer. Playing on the "O green world" it symbolizes that we can't replace the earth and our attempts to reach out for alternatives we find none except the one we care for
Good to see Robbie Rotten making moves
Please do The Magic Whip!!!
A bit like the hip-hop version of Dark Side Of The Moon.
It’s more of a rock hip hop funk and folk mix which makes it so good
Loved the video! I hope you eventually go through all the rest of the Gorillaz albums 😄
36:27 This comes to mind: Morning has Broken by Cat Stevens (Yusuf). Yusuf's voice almost sounds like Damon's voice.
"Morning has broken like the first morning
Blackbird has spoken like the first bird
Praise for the singing
Praise for the morning
Praise for them springing fresh from the world"
he looks like a formal robbie rotten
I know it's a lot newer. But I'd love to hear you do "Awaken My Love" by Childish Gambino. You've already done two of my favorites, Dark Side of The Moon and now Demon Days. I'd love to hear you do that one. You'd complete me. ❤️
The sounds of the bird in O Green World are actually supposed to come from Murdoc’s
pet raven, Cortez
says experince the analogue world
Me: sits down and watches the whole video
What a great dissection!
I always assumed White Light was linked to White Lightning, a cheap alcoholic drink in the UK.
Love these vids
Basically, the rock version of Blurryface
Pretty amazing video, really looking forward to whrn u make plastic beach!!!!!!!!!!!!
Vinyl Rewind is actually so underrated!!
When you realise that in the demon days vinyl, Gorillaz forgot to use all caps when they spelt the mans name
Ok
6:10 I think of a broken radio playing Country music or at least trying to as the the old world slowly deteriorates
24:27 that’s Murdoc’s ringtone
