It's hardbreaking how the media and most of the fan destroyed weezer back in 96. Imagine if weezer got the support they deserved and continue the momentum from pinkerton. They would have been revolutionary. Maybe even more than radiohead. Sad.

Weezer fans always loved it. Always. It was the mainstream casual fans and critics who didn't "get it". Rivers has acknowledged that weezer fans always loved it, and that he should have let them down by refusing to engage with the record out of a misplaced embaressment.
Nah. I think Rivers is an emotional writer. He's happier these days than back then. Unless his actual life was different, I think he'd stay the same route.
Radiohead sucks.
Pinkerton has the best cover art for an album by far, in my opinion.
It's so good! I personally have to go with *In the Court of the Crimson King* by King Crimson or *Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness* by The Smashing Pumpkins myself.
Pinkerton is really cool. Nothing beats Our Love to Admire by Interpol for me though

Because more intelligent reviews attract more intelligent people and intelligent people are in lesser numbers. Just statistics, nothing wrong with it.
"Falling For You" is my favorite on this album by far.
Mines The Good Life
Across The Sea and Pink Triangle are the two best on this album
It's the one song I can really and painfully accurately relate to
Oh, for sure, man. Getchoo is my least favorite on the album.
Falling For You has something in the chorus that Pinkerton's other songs don't have
Pinkerton is a great collection of songs to be treasured. My favorite record of theirs until Everything will be alright in the end almost 20 years later. Also they are great live
Thank you! A lot of people see the White Album as their "quality comeback" but EEBAITE was absolutely killer. The songwriting was on another level.
Rivers actually married Japanese Kyoko Ito who quite literally at the time was "across the sea"... They met at a show in Japan in '97

"Falling For You" is my favorite song on Pinkerton and my favorite Weezer song. I honestly believe the "holy sweet, goddamn, you left your cello in the basement" part is the best bridge ever made.
I personally adore Falling For You, and ultimately it is the most complicated chord wise on the album. My wife and I actually have a line from the song engraved on both our wedding rings. Easily my favourite weezer album overall.

I was playing Buddy Holly and my dad asked who this band was and I said Weezer, he told me he never heard of them. I said dad you own The Green Album. He then said what other albums are there. I listed a few and he said: Man whats there deal with colors. I sighed. Man my dads a fool but I love him

Falling For You is simplistic? It is by far the most complicated song musically on Pinkerton coupled with the ironic lyrics "little old 3 chord me"
as I've stated already, maybe simplistic isn't the right word choice, but it doesn't move me anywhere. It just feels like it keeps going around in a circle. And the chorus isn't as strong as others on the album. The guitar solo is the best part for me

Not to mention the insane chord structure and series of modulation it goes through. He plays all 12 major chords in the song. How many songs do you know that do that? When I heard him call it simplistic I almost spit out my drink haha.
Excellent review Eric. This one was truly a labor of love and I can tell you put a lot of time into it. You got far more into the history then I was aware of which was really cool. I learned a few new things about the album.

Never knew about this "songs from the black hole" idea and now im bummed they didn't go with that
The first 4 songs were part of that idea
I remember playing Across the Sea at like 15, maybe a week or so after I rediscovered Pinkerton, and my mom walking up the stairs right as he sings "I wonder how you decorate your room" and having to mad dash to the volume so she wouldn't hear Rivers singing "I wonder how you touch yourself and curse myself for being across the sea"--Listening to that song as a teenager was like hearing it for the first time, it was one of the first times I heard something so brazenly sexual in a song. And I wasn't expecting it!

I really dig your presentation here! I thought about getting this release, but I skipped it since I have it on CD twice (Original and Deluxe).
Pinkerton completely changed my life when it came out. It still gives me goose bumps.
The album looks really cool aesthetically - may be worth a listen all the way through. Here's one for you to consider - "Hyaena" by Siouxsie and the Banshees, as this was during the time Robert Smith from the Cure joined Siouxsie!

When it first came out I skimmed through it at the record store to see what it sounded like. I was expecting The Blue Album part 2 and what I heard was unapologetically, raw, unproduced sounding with all sorts of feedback which threw me off. I didn't give it a chance and I never really heard much radio play or attention for that record so I gave up on Weezer until their next attempt which didn't come for a quite some time. it wasn't until years later that I give it a real chance and now love and appreciate the masterpiece it is. in retrospect I think Weezer came out with his album way too early in their career, fans just weren't ready for the transition from hook based pop rock to something so artful so quickly. It took Radiohead several albums to get to OK Computer, The Beatles to get to Sergeant Pepper and the Beach Boys to get to Pet sounds.

My favourite Weezer album, a masterpiece! Bought it when it came out, never heard about the bad reviews here in Portugal. Gonna see them live for the 2nd time this July.

How come you're not worried by youtube copyrights when you play songs ? (wich is really nice)
I only play short snippets that refer to my reivew and I don't talk over them. So technically, it falls under fair use. Also, the UA-cam copyright bots don't flag me when I keep the clips short. Before I would play way too much of the music and also use it as a soundtrack over action, which fails under copyright infringement
One of the only albums I love EVERY song on. Pretty rare for an album to be jam packed with all bangers.

Dammit, I love Falling For You, haha. Oh well. Glad I've found a fair amount of appreciation for this amazing album.
Bought it on release day (Huge Fan) loved it. I actually picked up 3 more copies as christmas gifts later on. This has always been my favorite Weezer album.

I got this album when it first came out and I immediately loved it. But everyone I knew disliked it and I couldn't understand why. I think of the creative path they could've taken if it was recieved better when released. I'm blown away that this channel reviewed it in this way... was really cool to watch.
It was the year 1996 and I had never heard of Weezer. I was in the electronics department of Target and the video for the song the good life was playing. I was hooked on the chorus and bought the CD Pinkerton.
Pinkerton has been a huge part of my love life and had played a part in making some of my best memories. I remember second semester of last school year, I made a little meme where I change the lyrics to the third verse of The Good Life to "excuse me if I JUUL," and it had since become an inside joke in my friend group. A few of those friends and I went to see Weezer in August, and coincidentally, they played "The Good Life" as their encore. About the love life thing: I bought Pinkerton on vinyl for my now ex-girlfriend, and the girl I'm currently involved with and I listen to my cd copy that I keep in my truck all the time. That girl just so happens to be one of the friends I went to the concert with, though neither of us realized our feelings for each other at that time. Funny how things work out.
Im definitely late to the party for this album but i got really into after hearing the good life on the watchdogs soundtrack.

when I saw Weezer in 2018 Rivers saw how we reacted to a tracking said you seem like a Pinkerton crowd and changed the playlist.

I remember in July of 2018, I was at a Weezer concert in Chicago and Rivers rode past me on a razor scooter.
Best first concert ever.
Samething happened to us in Pittsburgh. River was high fiving everyone and accidentally smacked my wife’s butt. She didn’t know it was River and had a few choice words lol.

I’ve played weezer songs by campfires hundreds of times, but Falling For You is one of the few that has to be practiced & memorized before playing it.

I remember reading about how butterfly was inspired by a one night stand rivers had in japan while they were on tour which is probably a contributing factor in his fascination with the character of Pinkerton.

Probably my second favorite album of all time
Always loved this album - got it the day it came out - I think their best. Great history lesson on the album. If you never have heard Matt Sharp's "Return of the Rentals" by The Rentals, that album is almost a bookend to this one in Moog-drenched pop optimism. I'm not sure if you know, but the Pink Triangle is a symbol for gay unity, which soon kind of gave away to the all-encompassing gay pride rainbow (though still can be seen).
I have The Rentals album. I really liked them. I heard that's one of the reasons speculated why Rivers dropped Songs From The Blackhole. For some reason, I always thought it was purple triangle
