My daughter and I were fortunate to see this in HD, last night. The experience was unforgettable. Ying's voice is so beautiful. Peter Mattei plays his part perfectly...fantastic performances, all around.
Isn't she fantastic? I saw a recital of hers in 2015 in NYC. She really was quite something. I've not felt such a deep reaction to an operatic soprano in such a long time. The musicality and technique are first class.
Saw this in HD. The singing and acting were sublime. The camera work was so well done, focused on the singers, which took your mind off the starkness of the set design.
Agreed! It was almost like they all wanted to be at the peak of their skills for the performance that was being recorded forever! I was watching originally for Ying Fang and Ana Maria, but by the end I was so impressed by everyone's performance.
@@davidw2739 and not easy performances either! One woman in the cinema, during intermission, made a comment about how she hated the production and thought some of the scenes only worked when they were played for comedy (specifically when Zerlina sings to Masetto about him hitting her). I get that comedy is safe --- and also certainly hard to pull off. But given the serious direction and setting of this production, that acting had to be very strong to pull it off. And it really was! Mattei, Plachetka, Lombardi and Fang had me riveted every moment they were on stage!
Oh, heck - Andiam, sisisi!!! How did I miss him all these years!!!! Ah, yes, mourning for Pavarotti! Stutzman knows how to bring the best out of the singers with whom she works... as a beautiful contralto herself...

To me, Zerlina is all wrong. I think she's more of a Rosina from ill barbiere than a Carmen. Besides, if she were looking for an affair, she would not have screamed when Giovanni took her at the end of Act I.
Cultural appropriation, Horrible crime against humanity when done to a non European culture, when done to a European one; celebration. This is horrible and should be shut down.
If I may, what is being appropriated here? Ying Fang is the only non-European in the clip, and the music’s origins in Europe aren’t denied. When I think of appropriation, I think of TV shows using Native American headdresses to imply a group’s primitivity, without respect to what those fashions actually mean or represent-not an opera production directed, conducted, and starring Europeans (save one or two cast members).
Don't listen to brain wash liberals. They made everything worse and only want to torn us apart. As asian I don't care if you wear our traditional clothes or sing our song, as long as you are not disrespectful. If it good just enjoy it.
@@getbizet824 According to the American left, Any and all peoples outside of the native culture who created any music, art, apparel etc preforming in productions or creating anything from said culture; is appropriation. So only native Italians should be in the production. My comment was meant as satire to show the absurdity of the American left, but considering how only European culture is currently being attacked and replaced in Europe, I personally do not want to see someone (however qualified or talented they may be) Taking part in European culture, i say let's all go back to our homelands and separate from each other.

I'm so grateful to hear beautifully unique voices! This is stunning!... They both emote such sensitivity and color while being sung!!!

Mattei OMG I melt whenever I hear him sing!
idem milady
He is the greatest of all of today's singers in any genre and voice category.

Likewise, Natalie - so handbags at dawn then... 😂🤣

What silken voices. Goosebumps!
Ying Fang is an extraordinary singer. I got to hear her here in SF in Mahler #4. It was unreal.

I didn't find out about her SF performance until after it had occurred; I was so upset. At least I got to see her in Berkeley a few weeks earlier.
Warm honey poured over silk!
I love Ying Fang's voice.
His voice is like butter.
cream... smoother than silk even...

Bravo heart warming voices.
Historical performance. It is as good as music of Mozart. I cannot think of better singing of this duet.
excellently sung - both are world class caliber
Can't wait to attend the premiere!

The English subtitles helps non-musicians appreciate the song better. Good.
