Historically Accurate Rapier Techniques in VR - Blade and Sorcery

- I've always been fascinated by HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts). I tried using what little knowledge I had of it in VR to make something (somewhat) realistic and still theatrically cool, enjoy :)
Sped up slow motion footage was used.

I'm more of a longsword guy myself, my skill/knowledge is considerably lacking in the fencing department. Any tips are welcome :)
I do fencing, and we usually keep the tip pointing mostly forward while parrying. This makes it easier to riposte.
Any suggestions for fencing classes?
Not real fencing but because the blade is sharp you can block the enemy blade an spin it in a circle, if done right you cut their hand, and I have easy dismemberment so it cuts off their hand
When using a long sword you’ll find it much easier to slash. However in the video it seems you figured that out as you’re mainly thrusting with the point like an epee or foil. Seems you already kinda had the idea
It’s usually bad form to kick the corpse of your opponent off the tip of your sword.
Fun fact: Rapier duelists actually used to fight quite dirty such as tripping people up and throwing dirt in the eyes
in a duel for life or death, winning is all that matters
Im gonna put some dirt in your eye
@IAmAMonkey noooo they didn't. Slaughtering civilians that looked at them funny and cutting off pieces as trophies, more like. The "honorable" modern image of samurai are the result of a LOT of romanticization via movie, games, anime, etc. Historically, they were more violent asshats with swords.
Capo Ferro has multiple plays where you absolutely bust your opponents in some gnarly joint locks and painful looking thrusts to the face and forearm. It's all pretty because aristocrats wanted to make it so, the lower classes had less complicated and absurd relationships with death.
Wasn't there a way to easily beat them by literally grabbing the blade?
I feel your pain as you try to bind blades or get a good trade of blows and parries, but the bots are all: blade go swishy swishy lol.
Haha yeah, slow mo helps!
@@interestingameplay
Indeed it does. I think to get more engaging and good faith, well engagements, would require hooman players to interact with.
This frustrate me to no end. Without decent ai, the game has wasted potential. Swordsman vr is better in that regard
the "enhanced difficulty" mod is really fun, this guy's using it
@@waffler-yz3gw
I would try it immediately if I had VR. XD
I mostly watch videos like this to experience it vicariously.
I love how when you took a hit you recoiled and held your face for a bit. Good to know I’m not the only one
Roleplay is fun :)
I do it to for fun
Rapiers were sometimes paired with a dagger in the off-hand, since it was light and often worked both as an offensive and defensive tool. I would suggest trying something like that.
I'll try it out!
or buckler. or rotella/rodela shield.
1:50 like here?
Some of the best combat I get in this game is playing heavily armored opponents with a rapier and dagger, makes a struggle and you see why knights fought dirty with a ton of technical play
@@abrafo1891yes
I love the AI of Blades and Sorcery
Feels more like an actual scrap rather than punching barely swinging pillows
Also, loved your roleplaying. Made it feel more real and fun. Can’t wait to see what else you got!
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed
Bruh this ain't blade and sorcery ai or at least not normal ai cuz barely swinging pillows are wat they generally are
@eggmin yeah.... unless they neutered the quest version's ai
the only problem with BaS AI in my opinion is the lack of variety in the attack animations, i feel if they had more types of attacks the game would be much more challenging and immersive
I feel the ai is way to slow and puts to much time between attacks, my primary weapon is a rapier style weapon and it’s WAY to easy, add a little buckle shield and you can 6v1 with ease, also because they take turns swinging for some reason
I’m not sure where I read or heard of it but I recall a famous fencer in Europe. They were horrible at fighting with the blade, but good at tackling their opponent to the ground and stabbing them in the chest with a dagger.
"i may be horrible with a sword, but i will cripple your legs and stab you in the heart 29 times"
if it aint broke dont fix it
Rapier combat has always been interesting to me, and i often use it in blade and sorcery. I usually dont slow it down though, only doing it for a cinematic move.
the thrill of parrying your opponent multiple times in real time, and then doing a quick slash to their neck is amazing.
Agreed, it's a lot of fun! But I find doing precision stabs without slow motion near impossible
@@interestingameplayt took me months to get a hang of it, and I lost my rhythm after leaving the game for a bit
@@interestingameplay It takes multiple years of training, hand eye coordination, learning of the arts, and an intense amount of field practice. In other words, i just get lucky.
@@interestingameplay If I've been in one session with a rapier for 30+ minutes I can get the movie headshot(between the eyes) stab without slow motion most of the time.
100% agree bro
As a recreational duelist myself, this is actually pretty accurate, but I've always learned that each Rapier is different than the others. The Rapier in B&S Nomad, it resembles a steel smallsword prop, and not an actual Rapier.
Amazingly done! The flow like moves you do are impressive
Thanks!
As someone with expierence using multiple weapons in real life and is trained to use a lot of them, your dexterity is really good, you have great aim.
Thanks!
hahahahah sure
I honestly think you're the best B&S UA-cam out there. I think it'd be cool if really good dungeon runs and historical fighting in B&S could become a regular thing from you
Thanks a lot, I'm glad you think so! I'll be doing more for sure :)
@@interestingameplay I'm glad. I'm currently working on getting a Quest 2/3 so I can play some B&S and use what I see in your videos. Keep up the good work!
that last kill was personal 💀
i love enchanced difficulty cant wait for mmp to come back to see them fight with those crazy funny swords again
Love this, very impressive flow, might be a new favourite c:
Glad you enjoyed!
I'll be honest, I've watched this video at least 6 times by now, and I can't get enough. The moves are so flawless, and the editing, plus the music? Perfection. Genuinely your best video in my opinion.
Thanks a lot, this one's one of my favorites too!
Really impressive! I respect your attention to detail and love of rping! Your editing for every rapier jab is spot on.
Thanks!
ayo i love the gameplay if been trying to learn some stuff from you videos bro. keep up the good work
Thanks!
Wow, this is amazing! When I hop on blade and Sorcery I just go crazy but you are very calm and good at this!
This is actually so cool. All of tire videos are really entertaining. Like the best entertainment I’ve had all year. You deserve a sub 👍
Thank you very much :)
I’m just stating true facts about this channel. I hope you have an amazing successful career doing this. 🙏
Man, I love rapiers. Nothing feels as fast and graceful as one :)
2:52 very effective rapier technique, didn't even need the weapon 😆
This is truly a spectacle. Great job man! 👍
Thanks!
Good finessing at ~20 seconds in the video, nice.
no cap you got my sub gang!!! i love that disclaimer you put not long, its nice short and gets to the point which made my finger accidentally turn on post notis and keep em on lol
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed :)
The music is epic with headphones…also those mouth stabs are so brutal lol
As someone who is interested in fencing,
I find this video very enjoyable.
It gives me all the aspect of it,
Also, you did amazing with this, nice.
Thank you!
@@interestingameplayI actually got very interested from this video enough, now I’m taking actual lessons! thanks for getting me into it, it’s very fun!
Oh Yeah Finally! it was so long time to been I waited!
And also it was Great Video Keep it up!
Yep there were a lot of requests, thanks!
that spin at :50 was beautiful
Rapiers are probably my favorite, this is a superb video
Thanks!
You actually did what i suggested best youtuber.
Haha thanks! It was a great idea and many others wanted to see it too so why not :)
always the best channel to watch some blade and sorcery
:)
I’ve been wanting to see more rapier content
Yep it was highly requested!
One of my favorite moves with the rapier is bringing it up to the side of the throat and pulling back to cut it.
It’s just so slick.
Also if you manage to get a good flourish around the head, you can take them out immediately with a throat cut.
My god, this game makes me sound like a serial killer.
Enguard! Gave me a The Count of Monte Cristo chills...you know the one with Jim Cavisle and Guy Pearce and even Dumbledore 1 makes a cameo similar music.
The part where the npc slits your face, and you react is pretty brill 😂🎉
i love how when you get hit you get more aware and get more defensive but not too defensive
That 360 no scope at :56 xD I'm more of a saber sort irl if the option is there, but in this game my favourite moments are usually from rapier duelling :) It's just so satisfying
This is so much cooler to watch than those videos on TikTok where they’re in slo-mo the whole time to make up for lack of speed
love that you were like "fuck it, time to fight dirty" at the end
Man I can’t wait to get my hands on this game
beautiful.
I love that counter-thrust move.
Great video as always
Thanks a lot!
@@interestingameplay can you do a hand to hand combat video
You are so awesome man!
Thank you! You are too, thanks for watching :)
great job 🎉
Thank you!
I need to learn how to fence better, this is a notch up from what I can do
You should totally make a blooper reel of the times things didn’t go how you expected. I think it’d be really fun to watch, plus it’d go to show the amount of effort that you put into these videos.
That's a great idea! I'll probably do something like that for sure :)
@@interestingameplay easy 10 hours of content for sure, for every success there’s always 100 mistakes
As a fencer this was amazing, the Parry's the reposts 😗🤌 chefs kiss
Thank you 😊
Thanks Camille
1:39 watch closely... you can feel bro's pain xD
1:51 it looked like she was dodging with the drop in the music lol
Very nice
the fact that this dude has very little knowledge on fencing and is still so skilled that I who has done fencing and many other weaponry based martial arts, could never have a chance at being this skilled, although there are points subtracted for the overall weightlessness that to my understanding, VR permits, but still, the skill in this video is at minimum an 8/10
1:32 that turn around was so clean lol
Love the realistic way you fight without the use of slow motion to make the fight feel more dangerous and impact full. I also really enjoyed how you acted the way of being hit and then trying to recover from the pain while still trying to fight. The last part was the cherry on top for me.
You should try rapair with a dagger next time.
unfortunately, he used slow-motion. he says it in the description
@@boxdude8141 Ah I see.
Always great to see you dunk on some npcs, you should do a saber video sometime, my favorite weapons to use frrl
I'll definitely do sabers in the future
Quality swordsmanship; I can defo see why people like rapiers.
man got 1 of those new fancy vr suits where if u get stabbed ingame a set of knifes extend in the suit stabbing u irl at the same spot. coolshit man.
omg the camille sound track fits just perfectly
Yep I felt like Camille is someone who would appreciate some fancy rapier combat haha
My man’s got that landscaper fov
I love the historically accurate ragdoll physics.
Made it seem alot more realistic when you tried to stop the “bleeding” after every hit
Ah yes I love the historically accurate move where I flip the opponent upside down using only 1 hand and the tip of my rapier.
1:19
Fun Fact: The sword used in the video isn't a rapier but a small sword which is basically the lighter thinner descendant of the rapier, you can tell by the shorter blade and smaller handguard, while some small swords did have blades most had triangular shaped bodies made for thrusting
Oh, I don't know that!
0:15 clean asf
"Historically accurate rapier moves"
>flips a guy completely upside down with sword
This video is great. Super impressive!
In his defense, he’s just built different
Teach me your ways in blade and sorcery
When you're fencing then add back alley in your movements
blade and sorcery is either one of the goofiest jankiest game ever or it is the most majestic and satisfying swordplay game i know
Why not both haha
we making it out silver chariot requiem with this one boys.
what vr headset do you use?/do you use airlink or cable into pc?
That's some exquisite rapiering
Haha thanks!
What’s your PC specs man? I’ve been dying to know ever since that berserk vid!!
dude got a little cut on the cheek and was like "how dare you"
Mesmerising :D
Do the physics work better if you have a better PC? I tried the mods with your settings however the sword physics are weird and sometimes they just dont collide at all and phase through each other. I have a i7 and 16gb of ram with a 2060 but maybe its because the game is running on my HDD?
0:44
Damn that was a cool cool.
Right in the brain stem
idk how you got the weapons to work like that with those settings because i tired it and it made weapons not work very well
I have so much nothing to do all day i've made my own self-taught rapier tactic which combines two real techniques and then makes them compatible for slow and steady movements and decapitation.
Dude your an absolute bad ass lol
good use of camille's theme lol
Thanks!
Some NPCs were actually quite competent, offering some parries back and forth. It's a shame we still don't have multiplayer.
imagine swinging once and dying instantly in field
The fact that he started doing karate when he lost his rapier 😂😂😂
as a rapier artist professional ( im not one ) this seems accurate
Will you do other swords in the future like Sabre or katana?
I have a video for katana, I'll do sabre later
“Fear me, if you dare!”
you should try this but with the enhanced difficulty mod if you haven't, to put it simply, basically makes them forever swing so it's actually challenging
I used enhanced difficulty here!
@@interestingameplay that's surpising, their attacks looks more normal than usual, they probably just aren't good with rapiers
For me them not swinging makes it harder because I rely on parries.
Reminds me of raphael and amy. You should try some soulcalibur moves next! Id love to see a couple of siegfrieds moves but i doubt theres a big enough sword for that.
I'm actually not familiar with the soulcalibur ip, I can try though
Ok that was cool as hell
it wont let me edit the values in the json, and i cant stand the fling people, how can i do this?
0:55 was foul he did that man dirty
I have watched this one way too many times.
0:50 As you see here there's no real reason to aim only for the head while fighting an armored opponent, because a historically accurate rapier can stab through steel plate. This is because it's made from the highest grades of Toledo steel. Toledo swordsmiths spend years on a single rapier blade and hammer it millions of times. As a result it's ten times pointier than a standard longsword and ten times more flexible. A highly trained fencing master could easily defeat a musketeer simply by slicing the barrel off, or if the fight started at range by deflecting the ball back at them.
I love stabbing in bald and Saucy. It's Immensly satifying when you pull off a great stab but the blade slides off the skin like it's stone lmao. I love it when physics ends a great parry streak or you grab an arm and the engine elects to ignore that fact. XD
*BALD AND SAUCY*
💀💀
I really love how this displays so much of why stereotypical "sword fighting" just gets you killed, so many opening from over swinging its crazy how defenseless you become even when you as a player swung wide you can immediately see if the enemy was another player you'd be dead in a second
The thing about rapiers is in combat the goal is to go for a swift stab to the throat or really anywhere honestly
In sport, they would cut each other the fuck up instead of lunge UNLESS it was a duel to resolve an issue and not for fun
Imagine getting side stepped just to get a rapier down your Gullet.
Bro never fails to entertain
:)
@@interestingameplay :) btw are you working on the blades of chaos remake?
@@federalbureauofinvestigati1073 it's definitely on the list but not at the moment, I'm in bit of a realism mood lately haha
@@interestingameplay ah fair try realism with a war axe maybe in my personal opinion it's pretty dope and barbaric
@@federalbureauofinvestigati1073 Yeah I love that weapon! I used it in the later half of my viking dungeon run, I can definitely make a dedicated video on it later.
