Historically Accurate Rapier Techniques in VR - Blade and Sorcery

  • I've always been fascinated by HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts). I tried using what little knowledge I had of it in VR to make something (somewhat) realistic and still theatrically cool, enjoy :)
Sped up slow motion footage was used.

Not real fencing but because the blade is sharp you can block the enemy blade an spin it in a circle, if done right you cut their hand, and I have easy dismemberment so it cuts off their hand

When using a long sword you’ll find it much easier to slash. However in the video it seems you figured that out as you’re mainly thrusting with the point like an epee or foil. Seems you already kinda had the idea

@IAmAMonkey noooo they didn't. Slaughtering civilians that looked at them funny and cutting off pieces as trophies, more like. The "honorable" modern image of samurai are the result of a LOT of romanticization via movie, games, anime, etc. Historically, they were more violent asshats with swords.

Capo Ferro has multiple plays where you absolutely bust your opponents in some gnarly joint locks and painful looking thrusts to the face and forearm. It's all pretty because aristocrats wanted to make it so, the lower classes had less complicated and absurd relationships with death.

0:50 As you see here there's no real reason to aim only for the head while fighting an armored opponent, because a historically accurate rapier can stab through steel plate. This is because it's made from the highest grades of Toledo steel. Toledo swordsmiths spend years on a single rapier blade and hammer it millions of times. As a result it's ten times pointier than a standard longsword and ten times more flexible. A highly trained fencing master could easily defeat a musketeer simply by slicing the barrel off, or if the fight started at range by deflecting the ball back at them.

Some NPCs were actually quite competent, offering some parries back and forth. It's a shame we still don't have multiplayer.

Would be interesting if kinetic energy of two weapons pushing on each other affect your model's control and aim of the weapon...
for instance a warhammer is going to knock your weapon aside and in turn your arm will be pushed.
Likewise trying to swing a heavy polearm will cause a input lag between your actual arm and the ingame model to show that the mass is being pulled on as you swing.
There are vr gloves to give a sensation of touch and pushback with the hand, but what about the suit or your arms when you swing something heavy or locking with a weapon or something? can there be resistances built up against your limb?
Trying to punch a wall and the mechanism pulls back on your arm to show that you can't phase your arm through the wall. Try to stuck your head into a wall and the suit pulls you to stand back up as the wall resists.

The input lag is actually implemented into the game (quite well too might I add).
Also yes haptic resistance suits would be amazing!

    • @dra6o0n
      @dra6o0n Рік тому

@@interestingameplay It would probably be something like a motor or hydraulic system that pulls on your body to push against your motion, like say someone shoved you, you'd feel it as if you've been shoved and might actually fall.
The suit would compress on itself which slightly bends you in a sense, but doing so rapidly is kinda hard unless you use kinetic forces like wires or something with high tension and compression, like loaded springs.
Maybe the system can be mounted on your back and wired around the body via the suit.
Too strong of a force and the vr haptic suit turns you into a moving puppet though.
But what if mounted exoskeletons are used in a commercial setting like say a warehouse or some place designed to push more force or energy, you can simulate falls and jumping and such as you are wearing the skeleton, and it is hooked onto a mounted system like a 3d printer.
Say you are a superhero carrying a car, the system would push down on you to simulate how heavy it is, with a giant robotic arm in a sense attached to your skeleton.
      Lol, "Iron Man VR"

Theres also something called deflectional parries where you use the power from your enemies strikes to redirect them, this is what you do alot when fighting with katanas since they get damaged very easily compared to most other weapons.

i have shit tips like riposte more, control the enemies blade and lunge at the same time but idk if real moves apply in vr.
Also a cheeky move is go for the toe. Easy point to hit and can catch em off guard.

@@outdisbih4339 I personally love parrying the attacks coming from above their shoulder and then sliding my blade across theirs in a bind and stabbing their faces or necks from that position. Another fun thing is slashing from the opposite angle faster than your enemy slicing them and blocking the attack in one strike.

Do more historically accurate dueling stuff (sword and dagger for example, sword to block and attack at decent range and dagger close up when blocking with the sword)
