I think this has good potential. The people who chose this combination genre, singer, style , etc. might be onto something. Retro Japanese citypop sung by a Japanese person, but using modernized Korean visuals while singing in Korean, in a Korean music industry that is popular and influential worldwide, and between two countries that have some rough history with each other. I hope they continue doubling down on this niche and continue developing their image.

Exactly! I had this feeling since I was little! I was born in the 80s and we had this beautiful picture of the city of Rio at night in my living room and my father would play this kind of music in the kitchen. So as a child, I would sometimes stare at this picture for hours while listening to the music coming from the kitchen and dream I would be walking around in the big city of Rio at night. This kind of music brings me back to that feeling... Just google Rio by night so you can see the kind of picture I would always stare at and dream with while listening to this music.

This video hits different when you watch on either the a cinematic smartphone or a 4:3 TV/monitor lol. I suppose this is one of the drawbacks of playing with multiple aspect ratios in one video. I think what the cinematic ratio represents is how the boy wants to present himself to others, which is why it was made out like a movie, like, "this is my life, my movie". But when we're at 16:9 in which the video fits the entire screen (assuming we are all watching this video on a native 16:9 screen and not on a screen of any other native aspect ratios), we're being drawn to his POV, his reality, and no longer a 3rd person perspective. That's why most if not all clips of him were shown in the cinematic aspect ratio but not in the 16:9. 4:3 is probably his memory, his dream, his fantasy, formed from the aspect ratio of older TV and home video (e.g. VHS). Like how old people dream in black and white, the boy remembers and/or fantasizes in 4:3 aspect ratio.

No one is talking about the meaning behind the video. Okay. Here's my theory. The boy in the video, who is living in the year 2019, is obsessed with the singer, Yukika, who was living in the year 1989. He replayed her songs every day, especially "Neon". And he believed that if he played that song at 6PM, FEB.22 2019, exactly 20 years after she had started singing the same song in her signature performance, the most popular and remembered one till now, he would meet her, the one she preferred to in her song. The planned work. (As you can see, from 4:16 to 4:24, the minute and second display of the recorded footage in low resolution and the one you are watching right now. The hour, day, month, year matches the release date of this video.) Extra details/theory: The room she is dancing and the yellow car in could be preferred as the vehicles she used to time-travel in. She sits next to the wall of the time-travelling room, then changes to the seat next to the window, revealing the view of Tokyo in distance, in present time. (Although there is one scene where the low-resolution footage where she weaved her fingers in the time-travelling room and it is still 1989 - 1:47.) Pass the first chorus, she is at the present time, by the scene when she called the boy by the payphone. At the same time, the boy's cell phone rang. (She also tried calling the boy by the blue phone in the time-travelling room.) He went out to the street to find her, kept playing the song so he could keep the signal. (By 3:14, where he knows where Yukika is, there is more effect put in her voice and it is also the build-up for the instrumental solo/dance break, however, it could only be for the song and not the music video.) Where she had landed was no other than the top of his apartment, where he was not expected. The last scene, where the neon lights turned off, left the letters N, E, O, N lit to reveal the song title, but also that she needed to make a choice whether to the present time or not because the fog is building up and the vehicle needs to start right now. She could only give the boy a smile (but actually decided to stay in the present, the true end was not shown in the video). By all of this, Yukika wants to portray an image of a singer in 1989, who wants to find a more interesting life than the one she was currently experiencing in, so she travelled to 2019 and stayed here, and now will be giving us amazing music of the past. Things that I cannot figure out: What are the words in the picture from 0:03 - 0:06? Who was taking all of the low-resolution footage, both in the past and the present? What are connections in the lyrics of the song to the music video? Why does she have such a lovely voice, lovely stage presences with a smile on her face throughout the performances? (Too bad most music shows only let her perform a part of the song.)
I know little Japanese and I can only read Yukika and Neon on it PS: if she's really conveying a message that she's going to bring old music to the present, then I'm freakin' excited!
Seeing all these Orbits comment, it's easy to imagine her as part of LOONA 1/3 being a time traveler from Japan like Vivi is a (Chinese) android. It would definitely help develop their idea that LOONA 1/3 consists of girls from around the world. She also gives off very 1/3 vibes in this music video. I could easily see her in 지금, 좋아해(Love&Live).

No one is talking about the meaning behind the video. Okay. Here's my theory.
The boy in the video, who is living in the year 2019, is obsessed with the singer, Yukika, who was living in the year 1989. He replayed her songs every day, especially "Neon". And he believed that if he played that song at 6PM, FEB.22 2019, exactly 20 years after she had started singing the same song in her signature performance, the most popular and remembered one till now, he would meet her, the one she preferred to in her song. The planned work. (As you can see, from 4:16 to 4:24, the minute and second display of the recorded footage in low resolution and the one you are watching right now. The hour, day, month, year matches the release date of this video.)
Extra details/theory:
The room she is dancing and the yellow car in could be preferred as the vehicles she used to time-travel in.
She sits next to the wall of the time-travelling room, then changes to the seat next to the window, revealing the view of Tokyo in distance, in present time. (Although there is one scene where the low-resolution footage where she weaved her fingers in the time-travelling room and it is still 1989 - 1:47.)
Pass the first chorus, she is at the present time, by the scene when she called the boy by the payphone. At the same time, the boy's cell phone rang. (She also tried calling the boy by the blue phone in the time-travelling room.) He went out to the street to find her, kept playing the song so he could keep the signal. (By 3:14, where he knows where Yukika is, there is more effect put in her voice and it is also the build-up for the instrumental solo/dance break, however, it could only be for the song and not the music video.)
Where she had landed was no other than the top of his apartment, where he was not expected.
The last scene, where the neon lights turned off, left the letters N, E, O, N lit to reveal the song title, but also that she needed to make a choice whether to the present time or not because the fog is building up and the vehicle needs to start right now. She could only give the boy a smile (but actually decided to stay in the present, the true end was not shown in the video).
By all of this, Yukika wants to portray an image of a singer in 1989, who wants to find a more interesting life than the one she was currently experiencing in, so she travelled to 2019 and stayed here, and now will be giving us amazing music of the past.
Things that I cannot figure out:
What are the words in the picture from 0:03 - 0:06?
Who was taking all of the low-resolution footage, both in the past and the present?
What are connections in the lyrics of the song to the music video?
Why does she have such a lovely voice, lovely stage presences with a smile on her face throughout the performances? (Too bad most music shows only let her perform a part of the song.)
