This entire album is a masterpiece. Greg's voice is gritty and soulful. The use of Marci for this song was brilliant. It's one of my favorites.
It is a good one! Thanks Maria!
I found this channel after searching for reactions to afghan whigs - and you guys were the only one on youtube - wtf!?. One of my favorite bands and I have no idea why they are so underrated
haha that is crazy Joor! We honestly had never heard of them until a Patron brought this one to us but we have listened to some more of their stuff since and totally agree on them being underrated. Thanks!
Same here. This is criminal.
@@ReactionsToTheClassics Check out Catherine Wheel when you have a chance. Another criminally underrated band
Best album of the 90s for me...
We need to check it out. Thanks!
A classic song THAT NOBODY knows about beauty... straight beautiful song !!!
Greatness!
Gentleman was a concept album that told a story about a break up from an abusive relationship from that dude's point of view. "My Curse" was a song that served as the woman's rebuttal to the relationship he was lamenting about.
One of the best albums of the 90's. Truly underrated.
I have become a huge fan of them since this album. One of their albums is actually my #1 pick on the album drafts we are currently doing on the channel. Thanks!
This song is definitely a classic from a clasdic album. The whole album is superb, but I return to this song more often than the rest. It's dreamy, languid, bluesy, sexy, powerful, metal, scary, smart and gorgeous all in one package. That's a whole lot to pack into a song.
That's a fantastic description Reggie - I agree completely. This song is special!
Yes it is and agree with Paul what a great descrip. Thanks Reggie!
The whole album is about a terrible break up (Dulli wouldn't play this album live forever because of the memories it brought back). This song is the woman's side of the breakup.
Probably one of the most underrated alt rock bands out there. I'd love some more of these reactions from you guys! Check out the album Black Love for sure! The lead singer Greg Dulli also had a side project while the Whigs were on hiatus called The Twilight Singers. Different vibe, but really great stuff! Powder Burns and Blackberry Belle are awesome records!
Appreciate all the insight! Thanks for watching!
I would like to put The Gutter Twins to that list as well.
This is a project Greg Dulli did with Mark Lanegan, known for his work with Screaming Trees and Queens Of The Stone Age (and The Twilight Singers as well).
@@MrDecksels Yes, for sure! They're an awesome duo.
This is great. I wish more people knew who the Afghan Whigs were. Try Summer’s Kiss and Faded off of Black Love. I’ve been fortunate to see the Whigs multiple times in concert (mainly small venues) and I’ve met Greg. Swoon. ... They’re just the best.
Done a few others of them as well as The Twilight Singers. Greg is awesome. Thanks!!
I love afghan whigs, the best band
Thanks for Watching!
@@ReactionsToTheClassics 👋
I started buying Afghan Whigs records very early on, when Sister Brother and Up In It came out. Then they released Gentlemen. The moment I heard My Curse, I was completely in love with it. You should also listen to "Delta Kong" which was the b-side of one of the singles at that time.
Will check it out and have heard a lot of their stuff now and hold them in HIGH regard for sure!
I've been listening to them for about 32 years now, and still love the daylights out of them. You should definitely check out the b-sides, that's where the real gold is. @@ReactionsToTheClassics
Just came back to this again tonight, and was listening to some of their other songs. They are famous for their cover versions. They've done so many famous old songs, and this is one of my favourites - "Come See About Me" by Diana Ross and The Supremes. Absolute gold from the "Uptown Avondale" EP.

One small detail people seem to have forgotten about Greg Dulli.
There's a movie called Backbeat, about The Beatles and their time in Hamburg. In this movie Greg Dulli served as the singing voice of John Lennon.
Very nice. Thanks for sharing and for watching!
Afghan Whigs... Love and Rockets... Now all we need is The Flaming Lips and Butthole Surfers and that would be a good start to my college years!!!
As good an album release in the 90's, an absolute classic
They will appear in one of of our album drafts. Spoiler alert haha
This is a fantastic song in a fantastic record. The vocal delivery of Marcy Mays is superb. From this record Gentlemen and Debonair also stand out.
I would recommend as well their previous record, Congregation.
Will have to give it a listen. Thanks Fran!
This is akin to Prince giving Nothing Compares to Sinnead O’Connor….My Curse didn’t have the exposure but it is on par lyrically and the performance 🎭 s as powerful
Interesting analogy. Thanks for watching!
Black Love > Gentleman. Dulli is a genius and check out his other band “Twilight Singers” and the song “teenage wristband”
Really appreciate the suggestion and thanks for watching David! Stay safe!
This is the less afghanest whigs song of all of their song ahahah. Singer is greg dulli.
Try :
Now you know
Really appreciate the suggestion and thanks for watching Tero Salonen!
Enjoyed that . I’m only familiar with their song Debonair.
Thanks Kevin!
You guys missed the point of the song. It's a song about an abusive relationship that Greg was in. When they recorded it he felt like it would come across better sang by a woman.
Well Mike it wasn't for a lack of trying. We researched it so if we missed the point it happens
@@ReactionsToTheClassics fair enough. The Afghan Whigs are one of my top 5. I was lucky enough to see them at least 10 times in small venues too!
Don't know this artist or song. The start of the song has a quiet acoustic sound and builds with more rhythm as the song continues. I agree Trey that the song is tense. Interesting lyrically and the female voice gave it a haunting sound. Trey, at 7.25 and Shawn at 7.0 is where I would rate it, 7.0.
It was a nice surprise. Thanks Poet!
@@ReactionsToTheClassics Yes, I would agree.
I know i'm a fan but I thought you guys might go as high as an eight but that's okay. I'm thinking the fact that you said you wouldn't go back and listen to more of their stuff is kind of telling.
FIRST LISTEN that is the key to remember, or do you give tens to stuff you listen to the first time. Actually what is telling is that we did an album draft series last year each of us picking the top 5 albums from each year from 1965-2022 and one of their albums came in at #1 on one of my yearly lists. That's pretty telling huh?
I am constantly trying to get people to react to the Whigs and to Coheed and Cambria. Two amazing bands who seem to get routinely overlooked.
We really enjoyed this one. Thanks for watching!
@@ReactionsToTheClassics check out Faded or Honky's Ladder if you go for more Whigs.
