Subaru's rally pedigree can be traced from the late 70's in Kenya at the Safari Rally in Group B and Group A with the RX Turbo 4WD. The driver was the great kiwi Possum Bourne. For his exploits and the exposure he gave the blue team, Subaru gifted him a special, black WRX STi rally car for personal use. Bourne died in 2003 in a car collision with rally driver Mike Barltrop at a non-WRC event. The accident happened on the treacherous Waiorau Road (Cardrona, NZ) which has 100 corners and 15 hairpins. Possum was driving a Subaru.
Subaru found initial success in 1995 when driver Colin McRea became world champion in an Impreza WRX STi and the 555 Subaru World Rally Team winning subsequent manufacturers titles in 1995, 1996, 1997.
