I love these old Crawford Cop shows, however the most important thing is they are like a Time Capsule of Streets..old Cars..Fashions and how young everyone looked !....
In 1972 when I was 16 I ran across the crossing from Flinders street station to get to Princess Bridge just as the lights turned red and the traffic policeman blew his whistle at me, I was stupid enough to look around and he called me over into the middle of the intersection with him. He said nothing but kept me there for three changes of lights and then said you can go now. So embarrassing standing in the middle of Flinders St and Swanston St for that time. Missed my train to Heidelberg too.
Spent many cumulative hours hanging out on that terrace with friends on school holidays waiting for everyone to arrive before we took off to see a flick at Russell Street Cinemas.........thanks for the upload Gezza!
At 2:22 so the Victorian Police DID actually use Valiant's as Police cars. Loved the clip, Polaroid sunglasses, cigarette advertising in the background and adds for colour TV. The 70's, good simple times when everything seemed so easy.
Cars are restricted at this intersection now. Soon Melbourne was at worse in the top ten 'livable cities'. In the late 70s I was a student at RMIT. Before the restrictions and before the underground. The traffic down Swanston Street was horrendous. So much better now.
Excellent excellent add on as always takes me back. Wish I could jump into the footage. Typical Melbourne weather on seen looked like it just rained. When the guy walked across to Flinders Street station next scene on Princes bridge station just across the road. Fine and sunny. Love Melbourne weather.
Great vid Gezza1967 like always. I was a strapping young fella in 1975 , a world-weary one all of 6 years old 🙄 🤣. The year that saw 2 firsts - North Melbourne's 1st VFL Premiership after joining the VFL in 1925 , before their 1975 success they lost both GF they played in , in 1950 and 1974. The 2nd of the " firsts " to occur was Geelong West beating Dandenong in the VFA 1st Division GF , claiming what was their only flag in 1st Division. They lost in the 1979 and then 1983 GF's to Coburg (79) and Preston (83). They had won 3 Second Division Flags before 1975 however in 1964 , 1968 and 1972 ( that year being undefeated ).

For some reason I never went up on that terrace as far as I can recall. Perhaps because I was always in a hurry to get somewhere as soon as I got off the train at Princes Bridge.
Didn’t miss much. It was either cold wet and windy or boiling sun with no shade. Wasn’t used much. One of those things that looks good on an architect’s model with cardboard humans having fun but in reality totally disconnected from the surrounds.
I walked from the tram at the top to Collins St. And back again for YEARS for some ungodly reason!!..7am Melbourne winters @ 8 degrees..no conscious thoughts put into it, we just did what generations b4 us did..worked...met n married b4 25, had kids, ...derp...lucky I grew out of all that..near Byron Bay now

Gee it looked same Accross from Flinders ,above central station record shop ,that big slab nothing with little railing around it , surley that's prime realastate,,have have high rise in it now ,,still same in 2000,s probley would not be allowed build multi story building on that corner ,,because got three , historical sites on other three corners Flinders station ,,church ,,young Jackson's ,,, REMEMBER partying up top level ,,when had that dancing in streets ,thing on ,,never seen so many kids ,pissed off brains ,one place ,,around time song came out ,,Mick Jagger David Bowie ,,must cosideded with Moomba ,,because like new years Moomba rolled in to one ,,just young people must been about 84 ,,,coppers wernt expecting that many kids ,,they gave up end ,,free all ,,fights every ten metres ,have look up see if there any foottage of it ,,never had another one ,don't think
Jesus poor stake out. If it was the girl that was meant to draw out the criminal; those 2 plain clothes coppers sticking 5” from her butt are a bit obvious if anyone was casing the area early to ensure they weren’t going to be trapped.
I have this Homicide episode on DVD. It wasn't a stakeout. The young man is mentally ill and has commited,I think, three unrelated murders in the course of about two days ( a serial killer in other words,though the term wasn,t coined then). He had arranged to meet his Psychiatrist on the plaza at Princes Bridge. The lady is played here by the late Cornelia Frances. The cops are shadowing her for her protection as it will be recalled that he is a triple-murderer. The cops nab him and he is deemed unfit to plead and put in the mental facility. In the episode, a radio DJ reads outs on air a number of reports on the murders. The announcer was played by real-life DJ, the late Ken Sparkes.
