I’m a little confused with the pricing of the Canon RF VR lens. It says both their app and plug-ins are subscription based. What if you don’t want to pay a subscription? How do you get around it?
It does not do 7680 x 4320 btw, it film at 8192 x 4096 in H 265 (IPB). Without external monitor solution mentioned in this video - it depend on your environment. 10 - 20 min usually. But when you use external monitor and dummy battery - it is as long as your media card can hold.
Hi Hugh, do you convert the 8k 29.9fps output to 59.9fps in Premiere Pro each time you shoot video with this setup? If so do you recommend optical flow or frame blending? Thanks a lot.
Hello my dear~I'm studying hard with your good content. I have a question. "about ricoh z1~~~" If you go from normal mode to dualfisheye mode, the Wi-Fi signal disappears. From the your explanation, the Wi-Fi remains the same even when I go to dualfisheye mode. What should I do?
Yes in dual fisheye mode you do not use your phone to control - you follow my Z1 tutorial using manually control directly on the camera. As it take 9 bracket HDR - you don't need to monitor exposure. It is a lot more easier to now need to connect to the camera with your phone but just hit capture and hide instead :)
Great video Hugh, thanks for all the helpful details. One question: when exporting to ProRes out of Premiere, shouldn't the Horizontal Field of View be set to 180 degrees in the VR Video section of the export window? In your video, at the 20:56 mark, it looks like you have the Horizontal Field of View set to 360 degrees.
Hey Hugh, I have downloaded the adobe premiere plug in and made my subscription purchase for the VR plugin but it continues saying the plug in is not activated. What do I need to do to make sure this works properly?
Awesome tutorial, I'm a stills photographer and I must say that I was a little intimidated not only shooting video with my R5, but shooting VR with my R5! Your tutorial was awesome, I was able to record my first video and upload it straight to my Quest 2 for viewing. Just a quick note that I had to use the H.264 file format, the ProRes (.mov) wouldn't work. I'd like to send you a little something for producing these tutorials, do you have a Patreon or PayPal link? THANKS AGAIN!!
I did my first shoot with the canon vr lens. I ran into overheating issue after 10 min recording. I used remote recording (smartphone) and i had the ECO mode on etc as you suggested. I used as power source the original battery. Should i use a dummy battery or what could be a solution?
Mmmmm... let me do more research. Do your LCD turn completely off? Try turn off ECO mode and just set the LCD and EVF to go off in 1-min and try again. Let me know if that work. Dummy battery won't help much.
Update: changed display to HDMI only and in settings page 3 display only. Now using external monitor i get 22-23min continuous recording for 8K 30fps IPB Light. Also experimenting SD card vs CF . And recording with auto settings VS manual CLOG. And Battery power vs dummy battery. I keep updating how it goes. I think many people are going to have the same issue.

Hey everyone. I want to share an update. I have found a process to editing RAW Canon VR video footage. I will list the steps below. 1. Open up the Canon RAW VR video file in Adobe Premiere and make corrections to the picture, make trims, etc. as you like 2. Export a JPG file sequence with the resolution 8192x5464 (make sure to preserve the original aspect ratio) 3. Use ExiftTool to batch copy and paste the metadata from an original R5 JPG taken with the VR Lens into the resized JPG's 4. Open up one of those JPG's in the EOS VR Utility software and allow it to make corrections to it (you can adjust them if you like) 5. Close the program. 6. Delete all the XML files created in the folder except for the one related to the JPG that you made corrections of 7. Make many copies of the XML file that you made corrections of the JPG file with the same name (enough to match the same number of all the JPG's in the folder) 8. Use a program like "A.F.5 Rename your files" to batch rename all the XML copies to match the same naming structure as the first one, to pair with all the other JPG's 9. Open up EOS VR Utility, select the folder location of all the JPG's, select all JPG's, and export out 10. Import the new JPG sequence back into Adobe Premiere if you need to make further finalizing edits, then export out as a regular video file. And that's it! Hopefully this helps out all fellow filmmakers. ^_^
I've been looking for this. You may have unlocked the puzzle to getting 8K 60fps out of the R5C. So basically you are converting the raw footage to a jpeg sequence, doing some gymnastics with the meta data so that you can use the EOS VR utility to batch process the jpeg sequence, and then bringing all that back into Premiere? I was hoping there would be a way to just play with the metadata of an exported MP4 video (so canon thinks it was shot natively with the R5C from premiere, and then using the the EOS VR plugin after reimporting it. But I'll take anything at this point to get 8K 60FPS. Thanks!!!!
@@petermalaspina756 I tried messing around with copying Metadata from an original R5 8k VR video to I believe an R5 RAW to MP4 VR video but was unsuccessful. Primarily I just couldn't figure out how to do it as the process is a little different than JPG's. If you can figure that way out then do share as it would save some steps and speed up export. In any case, yes, this is the solution to recording VR and post processing it on the R5C as it only records 8k60fps in RAW (I just found that out after you mentioned it). Also, this trick bypasses the need to pay for a Canon subscription since we're dealing strictly with JPG's, and Canon doesn't limit that. (I'm not trying to screw Canon out of money in this regards it's just a coincidence like that.)
@@marksoukup1267 Thanks, Mark. Do you have a few lines of ExiftTool code that you could share for the batch process? On the issue of trying to rename the metadata from an exported MP4 to get the VR Utility (stand-alone or Adobe plugin) to recognize it, I think you need to get it into the exact same Canon codec/container (AVC-LongG MP4). I'm not sure Adobe can export that exact format though. Thanks again for your breakthrough. This camera/lens combo has so much potential, it's a shame to see the best of it locked away.
Thanks for the tip on RAW files! Man, I have no idea why Canon didn't make the process of using RAW or even letting users copy over the VR data to a Jpeg. How silly. Well at least there's a workaround. Hopefully they update the utility. The other part is I cant't get 8K in VR to work properly. On an Oculus Quest 2, only half of the screen shows up. :/. If output to about 5k it works okay though. How odd.
Wait it should work. So my output was wrong in the video - it should be 180 and 180 not 360 and 180 in VR meta. 60Mbps not more than that and use H265. What is your render settings?
@@hughhou Sorry, I saw this late. My render settings for 8K 30P is H.264 4:2:0 8bit. I'm using the canon Utility. video look fine on my Mac, but only the top half of the screen is visible in Oculus. The bottom half is very skewed. I tried FCP after exporting through Canon Utiliy and I get the same result. It only seems to work at 6K.
@@issekinicho yeah it’s kinda weird. I don’t remember seeing anything about 8k not being playable. I’ve tried exporting with FCP and it did the same thing. Odd.

If you see my system - I have cover weight - sand bag on the other end (refer to episode 1) - if the weight is distribute correctly and evenly - it is fine. Also sand bag on your legs. Safety should not be scarify your image. Sand bag is cheap but very necessary in all VR production. We can custom tripod that one of the leg is heavy in the base as well.
I've been using the RAW+JPEG approach suggested here to process my still images in Canon VR Utility for a couple months now, and suddenly this week it has stopped recognizing a bunch of my JPEGs and I can't figure out why! I point it to a folder that I KNOW worked a couple weeks ago and instead it just tells me "There are no clips." The video files work fine still if it's a folder with stills and video - I can see them in the "Movie" tab but when I click the "Still" tab it's just empty. Weirdly, this only happened to some of my files I already had on my computer. When I shoot new files and import them it seems to be fine. Maybe Lightroom is breaking them somehow?! It's really hard to debug. Has anyone else experienced this or know how what the Canon VR Utility is looking for to recognize a file as one that it can process? Better yet, is there a Discord or some other community forum besides these UA-cam comments where I could ask this sort of question? This channel has been amazing to learn how work with this new camera system I'm in love with but I'm definitely feeling some early adopter pain right now! >.
Okay, nevermind, I figured out what the problem was! It would seem that EOS VR Utility doesn't support the smallest JPEG size "S2" which is what I had been using to keep my file sizes as small as possible while shooting RAW+JPEG. BUT if you export your edited RAW files from Lightroom to JPEG at full resolution, then copy the EXIF data from the tiny S2 JPEG file, EOS VR Utility WILL recognize it and let you export to equirectangular format. Just don't expect to be able to process those S2-sized JPEGs by themselves.
Insta 360 evo had some problems and so they discontinued it. Mine recorded hazy video and images on the left lens. There was no moisture. They gave a software update that was stated to fix this. I installed and confirmed the firmware update, but this did not fix it. A waste of $500.
Glen I believe it is case by case. My EVO is fine and I bought actually TWO of them they both work great. But yes, Kandao EGO is still a big question mark. I hope more viewers request to be a real 180 camera so they replace it with fisheye instead lol.
@@glenmcinnis1119 I own 2 Insta360 EVO's. My first copy does contain a slight haze of imperfection in the right edge of the right lens. It's slightly noticeable in certain instances of 3D VR viewing but not enough to ruin the experience (just a little annoying). My second copy is flawless. So, I understand exactly what you're talking about unfortunately. I still think it's a great 3D VR camera for what it is and if you could find a used version on Ebay or wherever I'd say give it another try!
@@leonardofigueroa2307 3D VR 180? would you care to explain how this "3D" differs from other VR360 content? My understanding is - this is still a 3DOF content and the viewer still can’t move through 3D space (6DOF). The purpose of this lens, in my opinion, is simply to tie content creator to the EOS R series camera like R5. I am no expert in this area. so maybe you could help me to better understand and see the advantages.
Until we get 24K resolution VR360 cameras I wont bother. I dont wanna see minecraft pixelated videos. VR180 is optimal and will be for a long time considering our camera options.
@@xthene The Go Pro Max/360 uses Two Lenses, One lens is used to cover the front 180 Degree space and the second lens is used to cover the second rear 180 degree space which lets you look at everything in 360 degrees but that one lens is showing everything to the viewer in 2d and the left and right eye has the exact same mirrored image or simulated 3d, with canon the viewer views everything in 180 degrees but you're getting real 3d effect within that 180 degree space. Canon's 3D dual fisheye lens uses its two lens to cover that 180 degree space in order to give the viewer that 3d depth while cameras like Go Pro Max uses two lens to give the viewer 360 degrees of space without any real depth. Get an Oculus headset and watch videos in 360 from Go Pro Max than watch videos recorded by Canon's Dual Fisheye lens and you will see what I mean. For me personally Canon's 3d 180 videos are more immersive than videos recorded by cameras like Go Pro Max/360.

But the CRM files are neither recognized nor corrected by the VR Utility or by the Premiere VR Plugin. With 4K/59.94 MP4, it works correctly with VR Utility and Premiere VR Plugin.
Is there a way to correct the parallax in CRM video files so that the videos can be processed without loss of quality further as CRM Videos in Premiere?
I am a PC user.
best greetings from Switzerland
I’m a little confused with the pricing of the Canon RF VR lens. It says both their app and plug-ins are subscription based. What if you don’t want to pay a subscription? How do you get around it?
Well, this will be a tutorial of its own coming up very soon! I am working on it as we speak :)
How long can you film in H 264 7680x4320 before it start overheating?
It does not do 7680 x 4320 btw, it film at 8192 x 4096 in H 265 (IPB). Without external monitor solution mentioned in this video - it depend on your environment. 10 - 20 min usually. But when you use external monitor and dummy battery - it is as long as your media card can hold.
@@hughhou Can I use any monitor or tablet?
Hi Hugh, do you convert the 8k 29.9fps output to 59.9fps in Premiere Pro each time you shoot video with this setup? If so do you recommend optical flow or frame blending? Thanks a lot.
No I don't. I just use 30fps - I know it is not the best so that is why I also have my RED V-raptor for 120fps in 8K lol.
Oh shoot! Thank you for spotting the mistake - the sequence meta was off on that one! It should be 180 you are right!
I am in the control panel Effects, i cant find the eos vr plugin ... i type in search: eos, and also canon.. nothing. :((((((
Hey Hugh, I have downloaded the adobe premiere plug in and made my subscription purchase for the VR plugin but it continues saying the plug in is not activated.
Thank you Steve! I don't have Patreon. Your comment, subscription and likes are the best gift to me already!
@Alexander Mikula I just saw that EOS R5 C coming up in march. It will have cooling etc 8k 60 should be no prob according to reviews. So until then just trying to manage i guess
Hugh, Ive downloaded the Eos premiere pro plugin and bought it. I installed it automatically. when I start premiere, it doesnt show the plugin. i dont know how and when to activate it, because i cant find it anywhere eventho i installed it. Can you please help me ?
It enable by default after installation - it is in the RAW camera settings under Effects Control panel when you click the raw fisheye from Canon, the raw camera settings tap - it is like any other RAW eg, RED RAW, Blackmagic RAW...
@@hughhou I am in the control panel Effects, i cant find the eos vr plugin ... i type in search: eos, and also canon.. nothing. :((((((
Would you have any downloadable footage we can play around it?
Have you check my official review video? There is a download link there.
Hey Im having issues with both vr utility and the plugin. It continues to say no clips found when I try to bring the footage in
Did you install the HEVC plugin for your camera R5 and R5C is different! Also, use the menu to point to your folder!
@@hughhou yes I installed the HEVC adaptor. I was wondering what format the clips should be in so it can find them. My videos are all MXF files but I also tried converting to mp4 files to see if that would work but it didn’t. I’ve been at it for days; it’s frustrating. Is it possible to hop on a zoom or something so I can show you
is there a way to do this with a video file?
Hey everyone. I want to share an update. I have found a process to editing RAW Canon VR video footage. I will list the steps below.
1. Open up the Canon RAW VR video file in Adobe Premiere and make corrections to the picture, make trims, etc. as you like
2. Export a JPG file sequence with the resolution 8192x5464 (make sure to preserve the original aspect ratio)
3. Use ExiftTool to batch copy and paste the metadata from an original R5 JPG taken with the VR Lens into the resized JPG's
4. Open up one of those JPG's in the EOS VR Utility software and allow it to make corrections to it (you can adjust them if you like)
5. Close the program.
6. Delete all the XML files created in the folder except for the one related to the JPG that you made corrections of
7. Make many copies of the XML file that you made corrections of the JPG file with the same name (enough to match the same number of all the JPG's in the folder)
8. Use a program like "A.F.5 Rename your files" to batch rename all the XML copies to match the same naming structure as the first one, to pair with all the other JPG's
9. Open up EOS VR Utility, select the folder location of all the JPG's, select all JPG's, and export out
10. Import the new JPG sequence back into Adobe Premiere if you need to make further finalizing edits, then export out as a regular video file.
And that's it! Hopefully this helps out all fellow filmmakers. ^_^
Wow thank you for that! I hope someone come up with a more automatic process :) Great start!!
@@jordanruiz5076 did you install the Canon HEVC Activator? The VR Utility should tell you to do so if you haven't already. Although I'm working in PC.
@@mike1207976 Same for me. Render on mac and just half of the video.
@@issekinicho yeah it’s kinda weird. I don’t remember seeing anything about 8k not being playable. I’ve tried exporting with FCP and it did the same thing. Odd.
@@hughhou are you using DaVinci to stitch and export?
I had the R5 + Dual Fisheye Lens for a week, lended by Canon. I shot CR3 pictures, but not jpeg. Any chance someone would share an original Jpeg so i can copy/paste the exif ?
Can you just take a jpg and copy it over? Might be better be the same camera
@@hughhou I do not have the camera, nor the lens anymore. It was a lend from Canon France. the lens might not be available in France before sept/oct, according to my camera shop.
Hugh, i understand you don't want to capture the tripod BUT isn't that CRAZY DANGEROUS hanging your EXPENSIVE package all the way out front like that???
That is very good to know! Thank you for sharing your solution!
Hi Hugh, while setting record quality (7:40) I do not have the option to set the frame rate to 29.97P, only 25.00P. Do you know why that could be?
Your storage - are you using CFExpress B card?
That's very peculiar. I don't even have the option to record 25.00P on my R5. Are you using a PAL version of an R5?
@@marksoukup1267 It looks like it was a storage issue!
@@hughhou that must be it! I currently only have an SD card. Also, where can I find the official Canon LUTs you mentioned in the video? Thanks!

Quite disappointed by kandao's camera, miss my insta360 EVO even more...
