This appears to be one of those rare occasions where it was sung live to a backing track. You wouldn't get such a superb production (from Mike Batt) in a Top of the Pops studio. Great song - should have been a number one. It only reached No.14.
@@Jlipnicki Ryan Shakespeare! I went to school with him. Lived with his his mum over the Co-op. He wrote some great plays - Hamsandwich, Cory's Ol' Anus, Timon Of Arsenal, 2 Geezers of Virginia Water, It's Windy. And his prescient warning of climate change - Er... Winter's Late. Last I heard he was a scriptwriter for Rachel Riley.
Oddly enough, when Mike Batt asked them what sound they wanted, they drew a kitchen sink. Thus the Wall of Sound, massive drums, opera aria, rifleman, etc.
I noticed the name of "Brand X." somewhere on the set, I actually know that there was a band called Brand X, their drummer was none other than Phillip David Charles Collins.
Richie used to own Current State Diving in Bristol, he taught me to dive. Remember going in there and a couple times he was playing the banjo. You used to see him on BBC natural history programmes when they were doing diving, normally in charge of safety and he taught all the hosts to dive as his shop wasn't far from the Natural History unit in Bristol.
Sadly massively over-produced by Mike Batt, what the Kursaals were being turned into caused Graeme Douglas to decamp to genuine pub rockers Eddie and the Hot Rods. The Flyers had the pedigree of Dr Feelgood, Duck's Deluxe, Kilburn and the High Roads, Brinsley Schwarz ... a brilliant live band I saw back in Middlesbrough 1975 ... bit raw and unpolished but instrumentally tight, high energy, with Paul Shuttleworth's spiv act great frontman. The "Golden Mile" album produced by the so called "Wombling free" pop genius led to their rapid demise. If you've ever had the pleasure of listening to Batt's Schizophonia album of same period you'll understand why the Kursaal's should have kept well away !
wait a second, i beg to differ. If "little does she know, that I know, that she knows, that I know , she's two timing me!" are the lyrics, the singer is simply asserting that the girl does not know that he knows that she knows that he knows she's two-timing him. I believe this kind of thing happens all the time in real life. I wouldn't know, I've never had a romantic partner. Too busy finishing Mom's basement when I'm not passionately indulging my persona as Mister Smarty Pants on UA-cam. Plus, what few social skills I once had have since atrophied.

Absolutely spot on .
That cannot be unseen now😂
The ultimate piss-take of every love song ever written - complete with full Phil Spector (Mike Batt) wall- of- sound backing. Fucking gold...
The orchestration is as magnificent as the lyrics. Loved this record now 61 not 16 makes me smile
1976 aged 16 a Northern Soul fan I loved this, at 60 years of age, I still love it, even more. It's pre Punk, pre Ultravox, it's magic...
what's the significance of it being pre Ultravox?

@@TheFpCassini It means nothing to me .😁
I'm a N Soul boy, 62 years old me too.
The Lead singer really makes this song with a brilliant performance and just great lyrics .
Brilliant, I love the way it all takes place in such a mundane place as a coin op laundry
What other location could evoke a full orchestral movement?
God I love this. Brilliant!!!
It's magnificent isn't it. ☺
This song just makes me happy I love the music

Great song - should have been a number one. It only reached No.14.
I don't see any brass instruments in the band, or a violinist, so I think you are right.
indeed
What a classic. .bring back the 70s
" she was outside the one stop , when I saw her at the coin op"... beautiful words.
Such a wonderful and clever song. Love it today, as I did back then.
Absolutely fabulous, over the top production!
Paul Shuttleworth…genius performance!
Always loved this song
Who needs Shakespeare? when you can have lyrics like this, "little does she know, that I know, that she knows, that I know , she's two timing me!"
It was written by Shakespeare, the one that lived in Southend.

A brilliant song , ive always loved it .
Great singer, he puts everything into it.
Only 114 likes? A seventies classic.
"Diddy" David Hamilton hosting TOTP, a cut above one or two others I could mention. (Fulham fan too !)
Diddy is a legend. Ditto DLT and Tony Blackburn
Paul shuttleworth is a great front man , bit of max Miller ,Arthur Daly and any spiv out there .
Even his name is good, reminds me of someone but on meds and alcohol and cannot think who.
Get what your saying there mate👍👍🇬🇧
Loved this band , saw them live a couple of times
Has anyone got a kitchen sink? I think we could throw that in somewhere towards the end... Fantastic stuff, absolutely love this

I thought this was a great song back in 1976, nearly half a century later I'm convinced it's pure poetry.
Brings back happy memories
Still love the 7".
