Sneaklone yes Windows has more games currently but I'm not gonna use a shitty insecure and unreliable OS when I can already play my games on Linux
Cute hat >x
Well technically that is correct but it does not always work out that way. A lot of old companies still stick to the term "antivirus" even if they provide protection against adware, PUP's and zero day threats. To get the right protection it is important to understand how these solutions work instead of just the names. In this day and age you need to have a program that provides realtime "zero day" protection. This can be a behavior blocker or intrusion prevention system. Since a lot of malware is created everyday it is important to have a solution that can protect you against unknown malware. As with everything else the effectiveness of any product is not guaranteed so be sure to check sure to check out some reviews before choosing any product.
Thanks for the video, Linus,
Best regards from The PC Security Channel.
I totally agree
It's heuristic scans like that which lead to false positives ...and the dark side.

MalwareBytes *was* great... until they ruined their interface by making it look just like a fake anti-malware program, with excessive warnings in big red text, cartoonish icons and buttons, and constant nagging to upgrade to a paid version.
I'll agree on you with that one, but that certainly has not changed how well it performs. The upgrade to premium is well worth it.
Jacarch-Tech Thankfully the old 1.75 version of MWB still works and can still get the latest malware updates -- you just have to turn off the automatic program updates, or else it will auto-update itself to the new, ugly 2.x version.
I don't mind the look at all, in my opinion it isn't off putting at all purely because is is Malwarebytes, but in addition i'm not sure how to obtain the old one, not that it matters to me anyway:P
I really don't care about the interface, Malwarebytes' is still a great anti-malware. :p

far better but not for novice users
i use both avast antivirus and malwarebytes anti-malware they both pick up different files i may run avast and find nothing then run malwarebytes and it finds malious threats or vice verser its not too bad i guess but would be better to have one program that does it all in one scan its alot of time to run 2 seperate scans

+VirtualCoder I totally agree with that.
+VirtualCoder Yes, oh yes. I've fixed many a friend's PCs from adware and shit they got from probably looking at dirty links, be safe when you search the web, don't go into adventured lanes because they tend to run empty for a reason.
Zer0Mem0ry you are a very intelligent person...
Malware can trick your brain, so... ...don't trust yourself.
That is actually true. That's why i don't have any antivirus or antimalware cause I know what I'm downloading
I appreciate the blur on the word clear. Nice touch as always.
Man these videos are so well made. Excellent work!
My anti-virus program is called "Don't Click Stupid Shit."
This video is misleading, but perhaps not intentionally. Malware is any form of malicious software, a virus is a specific type of malware. An antivirus program IS an antimalware program. And while the term malware can technically apply to things other than viruses (I.E. potentially unwanted programs, adware and spyware.) malware and virus are widely used interchangeably. Also, you don't need two separate programs running on your system. You want to run a program that has real time scanning capability, and probably both web content filtering and firewall or intrusion defense as well. It's not a bad idea to have some sort of mail scanning feature either. Preferably you should use an antivirus program which does both signature based (heuristic) and behavioral based (anomaly) monitoring and detection. That means that the antivirus scanner not only looks at files known to be dangerous, but also looks at other programs running on your computer displaying typical malicious or abnormal behavior. You should always look up the detection and removal ratings of any antivirus program you buy, by researching tests run by independent eval companies, like AMTSO (Antimalware Testing Standards Organization.)
+ethernetspit you sound knowledgeable, can you lease translate that into English?
+Jack Sparrow Viruses are malware. The two terms are more often than not used interchangeably. "Malware" isn't some new form of viruses that requires you to buy a special product. Malware is just the umbrella term for viruses and other malicious software (program wrote to do malicious things, like hack your computer, steal your data or password, etc.) Does that make sense?
***** go troll somewhere else
Jack Sparrow I understand that not everyone is a technology wiz and security pro. That's why I don't like seeing videos like this with misinformation. Hopefully what I've said has made sense.
ethernetspit
Yes thank you, would an antimalwere program also remove viruses? and an antivirus program does what exactly? Target specific malwere?

AVG Free and Spybot - Search and Destroy
Years I have tried alot of things but kept these two as my main ones, never ever had a problem.
CCleaner also helps if you use it after you browse every time.
Avast and Malwarebyte.
Back when AVG didnt have auto updates and when I was a noob at computers I got a virus and the rest is history. Got Avast and been happy.
I also run anti exploit to.
(I keep avast running all time use Malwarebyte when downloading and use anti exploit when surfing web (not youtube) and it works quite nicely)
FatheredPuma81
Everyone always says Avast but I can not stand it at all.
ProtoMario It's because many people who search for viruses use Avast. Oh also. WE MEET AGAIN (I just realized this).
ProtoMario
I tried Kaspersky Internet Security once, the 30-day trial, it has both antivirus and anti-malware in one software, quite demanding for old PCs but for newer ones in the market, that software is no problem (EXCEPT MAYBE for boot-up times, it takes a few seconds even on beefy PCs)
... But sometimes, standalone applications are better, less resource-heavy and easy to access, not to mention FREE :D
You should try hitman pro anti malware.
Love all the videos Linus :) very interesting and educational stuff.
I've always been confused about 'Optical Audio' compared to standard Stereo. Could make for a good video :)

I have to say, this video came at the perfect time. I have a notice that my gaming PC has been running super slow lately, and I asked my dad, who works in the computer industry, what I should do to try to fix it besides antivirus scans and restarting the computer (I obviously did more than that, but that really does solve most people probs). He had suggested and time
BitDefender Internet Security 2015. Enhanced security. Enforced with Firewall and Parental Control. Best Protection for three years straight. Imperceptible. Best for system speed (AV-TEST). Extremely easy to use.
As a fairly seasoned at home PC repair guy I find that freshly re installing your operating system is the best way to get rid of all the nasties in your PC, just make sure to back up your important files first and to have your Windows Activation key written down somewhere. To keep your PC running quick as a whip after the re installation try installing these programs: Avast Antivirus, Malwarebytes, Glary Utilities, and CCleaner, these are all free software unless of course you want the Pro editions. After you've installed those run a scan with Avast and then Malwarebytes on your backed up files to make sure they aren't infected and boom you should have a PC as functional as when you first bought it, well, assuming there's no major dust build up around your hardware anyway. I've used this method for about 2 years now and it has yet to leave me with an unsatisfied client.
With avast + malwarebytes or avg+malwarebytes running, can i turn off the win. Defender, sorry for asking
I use Avast and Windows Firewall and seen no issues, but my VM ISOs keep popping up but ONLY in .rar, .7zip, and .zip file storage folders in the Downloads folder.

@Techquickie I guess a better question is what program you use since we all are following you. No to be disrepectfull but it's like we come to your channel to research these things because we value your opinion, but then we're deflected back into space to research even more.

Hey Linus and crew, I've only been a subscriber for a under a year but wanted to thank you for your great videos. I'm somewhat computer illiterate but I do my best to keep learning and your videos are very helpful. Keep up the good work.
Idk man, its been a lil more than a year
I’m surprised this comment is below everything
I use malwarebytes free edition and eset nod 42. Basically because theyre both so light, i have not noticed any slow downs. Both are also well respected pieces of software.
I have avast running all the time, and run Malwarebytes when I feel like something might not get picked up.
I've been using Avast for real time and Malware bytes anti malware just for scans if i get into a serious issue. But i haven't really had any viruses/malware in such a long time.
I have the same setup, my friends tell me it'll conflict, does it? Curious to know
Well, i've had this set up for years. As long as you don't have both running live at the same time. But as i have it now, i only really fire up malware bytes when i really need to use it, which lately hasn't been very much at all.
This is by far the best combo out there. I have both running simultaneously and haven't noticed any performance hit. Been virus and malware free for years
Awesome thanks!
Anthony Szollos That is literally EXACTLY what I have...
I'm using webroot secure anywhere!
Consumes less RAM and disk space.
I run MBAM in real time along with windows defender in real time. Never had a problem. Just to be on the extra safe side you can update the exceptions list for both so they don't recognize each other.
very concise, well-made video, great job!
I would love to see a updated "best" antivirus software.

I use Malwarebytes and windows firewall :) haven't had a virus in a while now :3
although i know most of the things he knows i watch him just for the way he talks...funny guy
Update needed - does windows 10 need a antivirus program or should just use the built-in antivirus?
Aside from Malware protection and Antivirus i've had a great experience with tools like Search & Destroy that tells you whenever your startup list wants to change and protects your system files, even if it's not always fun to accept or deny changes it gives you an extra piece of control that could became helpful.
Also, of course this is just an overview, but many malware can be avoided by just keeping an eye out on where you are browsing, which email are opened, etc...
worst antivirus: Mcafee. Takes 1 hour to scan the whole computer while malwarebytes and other anti virus take around 5 or maybe 10 min depending on how huge fiels i have

norton is virus himself lol
Norton isn't a virus, it is a true anti-malware/anti-virus, look up Norton vs wannacry, Norton doesn't even allow wannacry to run at all. Plus, Norton scans downloaded files and can do whole computer scans to keep you protected.
well played, ads are getting smarter xD
i use nortons my self and love it
My dad put norton on all our windows computers. I hate it because it makes it difficult to keep certain programs up to date, as it blocks installs of program versions that aren't popular enough in it's database. Never had that problem when we previously just had McAfee.
I use Windows Defender, Malware Bytes and common sense.
Haven't had anti virus, firewalls or any similar software in over 5 years and my pc is fine. The best prevention is not to download dodgy programs and use a good browser with ad block.
If you're using Windows XP SP2 or newer then you have a firewall, newer Windows on newer hardware has some more anti-malware-protection.
same no adblock but NoScript much more effective (and AdBlock+ got sold as i remember and now seems to have spyware in it), Antiviruses are just a Placebo Pill, their free versions are marking things as a security breach that are just normal things that dont have to do with security just to get the stupid useres pay for the sugar pill
you guys realize thaat not downloading dosent guraetee you no viruses ROFL your funny AF FUNNY!!!!!!!
I use COMODO Internet Security Complete and also paid for the Mlwarebytes anti-malware and have both on my system running actively. I don't notice any slowdown at all. Mainly because I never run scans, because it's real-time perfection, it scans things automatically that I click on (downloads, links, sites, etc).
Glad linus's ad transition game was on point in 2014 too
if i put a Auto-shut-down program in the startup folder, does that make it a virus?
Virus is basically a program that does actions the user doesn't want.

Hello Joel
when software is advertised as a security suite, a term that generally refers to a collection of programs, does that mean it has both?
Could you do "optical vs digital image stabilization as fast as possible"?
Or just, you know, don't be an idiot. That's adequate malware protection.
+hellterminator
some, actually, a lot of malware pages force you to download files as soon as you open them, and those files are usually small so that before you can get out and close the page, it already downloaded them. having a decent anti-virus prevents you from downloading pretty much any malware, as most of them are old and the anti-viruses know about them. you can very easily prevent yourself from entering malware-enforcing pages though, since you'll either see that you're being re-directed to somewhere completely different (and therefore you'll have time to close the page or the browser) or you'll see a big flaw in the name of the page (a real example would be goggle instead of google, and yes, i know that goggle is a real word but still) and then you'll know that it's probably not a good website to enter.
also, many browsers have in-built protection (google chrome is a very good example) and it won't let you enter some easily recognisable harmful sites.
another thing to note is that adblock can prevent any spyware or anything like that which could spy on you by opening in another window without you noticing, since it's working against pop-ups and whatever unwanted content which shouldn't be on the page, and it checks what's the source of the pop-up or ad and then proceeds to block it if it conflicts with it's big database. pretty much all spyware is under that category.
Mighty Wolf A web page serves me up a file for download, so what? If you have your browser configured to ask what to do with files being downloaded, a dialog will pop up and you will be able to cancel the download. If you have your browser configured to just automatically save everything to some folder, you _will_ be alerted when the download finishes. Then, all you have to do is not run that executable (and delete it, although you don't really have to if you want to keep it for some reason).
*****
most malicious programs which are downloaded actually don't need you to start them up.
i'm talking about viruses such as self-replicating worms and whatnot.
Mighty Wolf Developing a proper worm is extremely difficult (and therefore very expensive), so no one bothers to do that when all you have to do is set up a “free movie streaming” site which requires you to install a “plugin” to play all those free movies.
Besides, all worms are developed specifically to circumvent malware protection, so running an anti-malware program won't save you either.
But there's not much to worry about, the era of really bad worms like Code Red or Sapphire is long gone.

don't know, might work.

SuperAntiSpyware is the bast and its free. I had a virus called "Win Rar 7' literlly the worst thing ever lol
+Tuko DS I took my laptop down to a computer shop, I had AVG on it. After getting it back they'd installed SUPERAntiSpyware, they said it was by far the best and non intrusive. Working at a computer repair store I can confirm that it is one of the many tools our technicians employ to deal with malware. I don't use any anti virus, I have malwarebyetes installed and scan once in a while, this build of windows is nearly a year old and still runs pretty damn well and I never had anything pop up.
I have been on the web since the early 90s and have used quite a few different malware protection programs since then. The best one I have ever used is Malwarebytes and I don't care about the graphics or any of that. I care about being protected and the engineering report I read had Malwarebytes at or near the top of the heap. I have heard good things about Kaspersky also but have never used it. Malwarebytes does it all and I DO NOT work for them!
Browser- Chrome or Firefox with AdBlock plus with the tracking and Malware filters, IE gets the nod when the built in protocol for adding filters starts working. NoScript if you want to be really anal.
AV - AVG, Avast, AdAware, MS Security Essentials, etc. Preferably one with an anti-rootkit function
AM - MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware is the gold standard right now, along with their MalwareBytes' Anti-Exploit. SpyBot if you're old school and want some power tools that come with it. But, there are other robust options.
Other utils - ComboFix, TDSSKiller, HitmanPro, SuperAntiSpyware, ADWCleaner, GMER
EDIT: The new entry is called White Cloud Security. inexpensive and touted as the new direction security is headed. Very small footprint and high performance. VERY secure, it relies on whitelisting/hashing? and restricted file execution.
((deprecated))
I cannot remember the name but there was a new entry into the AV field recently. I cannot remember the name of it but if I do I will try to update this post.((/deprecated))
***** I focused on ones I have dealt with either personally or professionally, does ESET have a free offering? And how is it to use?
***** I haven't had a whole lot of issues recently with slowdown aside from bootup. But that is where those new style AV's are going to be the top performers where there is no overt scan being done, its all front end limitation in the code.
White Cloud Security is the newbie I was thinking of.
***** I've not had the kinds of issues with AVG I have had with Norton or McAfee. I cannot say for sure on the paid version, but so far as I have experienced AVG offers little performance difference to Avast, a bit less speed than AdAware, and mixed to slower compared to MSSE. MSSE seems to sometimes be finicky on bootup while otherwise being largely faster.
***** AVG toolbar can be removed, if you downloaded it from somewhere else that may be from the source and not AVG. I don't get any purchase requests except for when they update to new version
using Avast, absolutely no notifications in my years of use, and if i check logs, it did find viruses and deleted them, so it is less intrusive
btw great catch linus!
Just about to build my first pc and I'm wondering if I should download any antivirus or malware removal software or does windows provide me with enough security?
AV/AM software are useless! You can find decent RAT(the thing you use to control botnets and "infect" pc's) software for free, 50-100$ a month will get you a decent crypter(it's used to trick the AV/AM/firewall into thinking your malware is safe) and binder(you use it to merge the "virus" file with the file you want to infect others - like a crack for a game). Then you get on a 0-day upload tracker, get the newest software like 5 minutes after it's uploaded, infect the crack(it's probably infected already by the uploader from the 0-day tracker but who cares) and spread it on public or small trackers where you're an ulpoader(don't forget to write in your torrent description that the people need to turn their AVs off if it gives "false" alerts - it's just how the crack works... right... that's just in case when your "virus" gets outdated and AVs start detecting it and you need to wait for the hacker who sold you the cypter to update it so AVs don't detect it again). It's simple as that, you'll get tons of ppl for your botnet in no time... AV/AM/Firewalls detect only old/unsupported/unused anymore viruses/malware/keyloggers/whatever. The best way to protect yourself is to not download any pirated/unknown files.
