Hi. Just wanted to drop you a line and let you know how much I appreciate your channel. I have been in shitty bands since I was 15. At 50 I finally decided I obviously can’t work with anyone, so I’m going on my own. Yep, old man home studio and tons of learning and practicing. Although, metal isn’t my primary interest, what you share I find invaluable. You, Beato and Guy Micelmore have taught me quite a bit. Noone may ever listen to what I create and that’s fine. I’m just happy to finally be doing what I want the way I want it.And, I enjoy learning new things. Anyway, thank you very much. I watch every video you put out there.
IK’s Black 76 is the one I choose every mix. IK’s plug-ins are solid IMO.

Agreed, great 1176 to plugin!
They are amazing. I notice I always gravitate back to IK's plugins - especially the EQP is a favourite and all the compressors.

Software vs Hardware: my opinion
Snare: Software sounded really good, maybe even better than the hardware
Kick: liked Hardware more, but changes are minor
Overheads: definetly liked hardware more, but again, the Comprexxor did a pretty good job.
Bass: no comparison, comprexxor sounded good tho
Master: literally no diffence imo

I got the Comprexxor based on your review and from the fact that I already had several IK products, so I knew their quality. Works great and I use it on every vocals I do!

I have been IK multimedia user for over a year. Got their Studio Max bundle and modo drum. Their stuff realy is AMAZING.
I bought Amplitube 5 MAX for $400 and its the worst purchase I ever made. Helix Native is so much better.
I love my UAD distressor lol. The IK stuff has really come a long way.
Hey Glenn! Please forgive me if this is already been asked of you, but this video reminds me that I'd really love to see you do an episode on the pluses and minuses of Hardware vs plugin, and not just the sounds of individual plugins versus individual Hardware but just as a general rule.

I really want to get into rack hardware, having just bought myself a rack as an excuse to do so. What are your recommendations for decent rack units to get me started? 10 years ago everyone dreamed about Distressor in the box and nowadays almost every major plugin company have their version of it.
I should add that I use 1176 black from IK and it's better than many hardware 1176s I saw (bold statement) so I'm very eager to see if this one holds up to that standard and I will definitely try the demo myself.
Felt like you should've showcased the Opto mode with Bass! Or Vocals! Can't wait for the comparison vid because I'm holding out on buying a Distressor plugin atm.

I have a question for you Glenn! As someone who hasn't got any outboard gear, but saved a little bit of money: would you rather buy a distressor or maybe a mike-e? Does the compressor in the mike e the same thing as the distressor? Then it would be a better deal right?
Yes get the Mike E it is based on the distressor with a preamp.
In my experience external compressors are just unmatched, for bass though! Love my MXR bass Comp, works like a dream.
What camera are you using now Glen? Great content keep up the good work!

I believe I noticed (correct me if I'm wrong, I'm a musician so too lazy to go back and check!) you were using a stereo imager/widener on your mix bus. Any chance of a lil tutorial about that? I never know when I'm under/over using it. Where's the sweet spot?

hey why was the ratio of the plugin compressor at 1:1 for the room track???
I noticed that too. Isn’t 1:1 not actually compressing at all and just adding gain? I’ve always heard to crank the ratio on rooms, like almost limiting it.
Edit: he did set it to max toward the end of the room mic demonstration
It is set to GB mode which on the hardware was originally accessible on 1:1 ratio (british mode), it isn't 1:1 at all though its like the 1176 all buttons in mode which is kind of 12:1. I think on this british mode works at other rations including nuke (max on the plugin).

That vocal scream is nice. And the mix was impressive compared to the hardware. I will experiment with using the Comprexxor more.

Boz Transiant is amazing too. you have to try it to know what i mean.
it sounds like your computer has a buffer issue when pressing PLAY. there's a quick clicking sound every time you start it. i'd try and mess with the buffer size a bit or check to make sure there aren't too many background programs running.
also, it COULD be something that only happens when you screen record, cuz CPU and stuff. idk. something to think about.

if it uses tape too then use Eventide Ominpressor with Caelum Audio tape pro. or Denis Bad Tape

Outside of the EQ plug-ins from IK you would have had to hand it too me as a freebie, I wasn’t a fan. But I’m adult enough to take a second look.

I think it's inevitable. Look a the difference in just a few short years. And with machine learning coming in, soon your plug-ins will do the work for you.

@@TonysMusicChannel I use them all the time. They get you damn close. So tweaks and you're typically good to go. Really streamlines workflow.
I think it was the best way ... you really did not put it up against your distressor but against the gear you really use for things... in the adverses companys put their emulation against the real thing and I should say in them slate distressor is almost the same as hardware also the uad version ... but in the videos I see real distressors (I don't have one) and i can hear every move they make and then I go back to my emulation and I can't tell when I turn a knob ... like attack works completely the same ... release works a little bit off (which fucks up the grooves) but ratio is like way off ... i mean not that much controllable .... so I really like to see the software comparison by someone who is not in a very fancy studio but someone who I fucking trust.

Presets are pointless for compressors. You should be setting it depending on the source.
That’s couldn’t be further from the truth. You either set the level going into it or the input on the plugin for -12/-18 like anyone who is making a preset would shoot for.

"software that emulates the real thing" - erm... yes it's good, but compare against the original and what about the UAD distressor or would that be considered hardware? the UAD distressor is one of the most accurate pieces of software emulation i think i've ever used. I did like the comparisons to an 1176 and the drawmer. The hardware felt more 3D and rounder if you will. though it would have been nice to hear stuff more in a full mix or a full mix you did with a distressor vs a full mix with the plugin.
That being said, this thing sounds badass as well probably the BEST plugin IK multimedia has put out. Most of their stuff is meh, this sounds solid. good find glenn!

@@ianbalasabas789 by far not the only, but definitely the best i've heard, i own a real distressor and have done comparisons and even shown other engineers (who aren't into UAD) and even they were very impressed..
I think all but the kick drum sounds great,but you can't polish a turd. The kick sounded bad from the get go. In my ears.

Nah its DSP. Anything that appears to be "analog sounding" is just pseudo. Now if the actual hardware was sampled then it would be closer to the hardware sound. I aint that easy to fool. A pretty GUI is not substance.

UAD Distressor sound so much better and near to Hardware, that this thing isn't worth it, even if IK make some few good Plug Ins but this one is only OK not a game changer :-)
