Glenn I have another overlooked preamp to give you a ton of different sounds. The Sansamp PSA 1.1. I highly recommend it. You can use it with or without a cab sim and it sounds great either way. Also a side note the PSA 2.0 pedal version does NOT compare even though sansamp claims it is the same circuitry. I measured the frequency response of both of them and the pedal s does not have as wide of a frequency response due to the high and low frequency roll off filters. The PSA 1.1 has a wider frequency response that makes it sound a lot better.

Damn that tone is fantastic!! Your A/B shootout sold me. Headed to the Nembrini store because an actual ADA is $500-600 used on Reverb right now. I'm good with paying $30 for a plugin. Good to see you, man!
I recently listened to Hole's Celebrity Skin. I noticed that distortion didn't sound like a normal driven amp or a typical drive pedal. I looked up how they got it -- expecting it to be some 90s distortion pedal. Boy, was I wrong. It was such a crazy amalgam of an obscure amp that was around the studio and weird synth blending technique. The final result was a UNIQUE distortion sound. It didn't sound overly processed or like a synth. The synth actually functioned like an extra tone stack to precisely dial in the frequency. Imagine if metal production took such care in crafting original tones.
The guitarist I play with and write with since 1982 had the most gorgeous, thick tone back then. He had a 100 watt Marshall Plexi and a double stack, and a series of Boss pedals that he would set up according to the sound of the room. It was HIS sound - it filled the clubs, inspired some damn good songs of ours, impressed A&R people enough to try to screw us over, blah, blah. One day in 85, I show up at rehearsal and heard this god awful shrill buzz coming from inside. I go in, he's tearing it up; no pedal board, just a dull metal long flat box with foot switches. Yep. A digital monstrosity. No matter which setting, no matter the guitar, it sounded like shat. And he loved it. We tried every way we knew to get it to disappear, but no go. HE LOVED IT. He kept his pedalboard in its case, however. Thank God. A week later we drove 3 hours to cut a demo on spec with a producer who loved our music and was helping set up meetings with A&R people. We set up the amps in the iso closets, and our guitarist started warming up. The Producer stops everything and asks what happened? When he was shown the techno marvel, he never said a word, just walked over, unplugged it from the guitar and the wall and promptly threw it out in the alley beside the studio. Our guitarist stood there with his mouth open, in shock. I grabbed his pedal board from its case, and we set everything up like usual. We were pros 🤓 so we warmed up, cut 2 songs, overdubs and all, and the guitar tracks were awesome, thick, warm and the sound was powerful. The sound was our guitarist, no mistake!
Bought the plug-in a few years ago. It doesn't only get all the three channels right, but also the delay and chorus are pretty spot on for those instant clean and lead sounds. I also have the hardware unit, but it's been in storage for ~15 years.
A former bandmate of mine had one of these and he pushed it into a 1/2 stack Marshal, and it sounded fantastic, especially when he turned it into a full stack Marshal. But then he gave it to his dad. He wanted to change the original tubes out with something called boogie tubes and evidently. That was a wrong move, and it fried something inside of it. Anyway, he wound up, giving it to me saying, if I can get it running. It will give me that added sparkle to my overall tone and I was pretty excited about it so I took it to the local guru and he couldn't do anything with it. He said you need to send that 2. The manufacturer So yeah, in the end I probably will just have to purchase a new one. By the time they figure out what's wrong with it, and I pay them to try to repair it. Thank you for reading this. I just really sent this in to help with the algorithm more than anything else. Rock On brother Glenn, praying for your wife.
GLEN , Please don't change too much , We all love your videos With a different and stylish (your own) type of informative videos So thank you very much
I am not a guitarist, but I do love all these guitar based videos you make. But what I have taken from this video, and bear in mind I use e-drums live, is how the connection to a video of a acoustic kit connects to some part of my brain much more than an e-kit does. Both sounded absolutely stellar, with no shortage of amazing drum samplers out there, it always was. It helped a lot that the mix of the acoustic kit was immense! *edit* I just did an eyes closed test between the two and the ekit sounded a little fatter. By the way, amazing job the guys writing something Queensryche-esque, even got Eddie Jackson's bass tone down! 🤟
Glad to see you're back Glenn (even if it's just a video here and there for now)! I hope your wife gets to feeling better very soon, and thanks for all the free information you've given us over the years!
That's a killer tone to be fair, agree on sick of hearing everyone with same setup, nothing wrong with breaking away from "the norm" Much love Glenn to you and yours
Happy New Year Glen!! I hope your wife gets better soon. I wish you two all the best in 2025. Keep taking care of her and we will all keep the channel alive.
The ADA MP-1 was the gold standard back in the late 80's. I have one, and if it goes south, I'll be scouring the internet the next day, looking for another one.
The demo track does a great job in capturing that Queensryche vibe. I remember a guitar magazine giving away a so-called dream rig that included an ADA MP-1. Another popular unit at the time was made by ART, the SGX 2000 Express. And bringing up the rear was the DigiTech GSP 2101. I was too much of a novice at the time to invest in that kind of gear, but it seemed ridiculously high-tech and god level at the time.
@10:00 I was sitting here not being able to tell the difference, thinking we need to see the freq response and maybe a 180 faze shift to see what is going on. Tnx Glenn, glad to see you getting back to a bit of normal.
Once again, another great tip, at a serious discount to boot. Thanks, Glenn! I had the opportunity back in the day to play over an actual MP-1 of a friend of mine, who was a Metallica nut (like I was in those days), so I know my way around it, even if I never owned it myself. But what I've always been after, was Nuno Bettencourt's Pornograffitti sound, which is all MP-1. I remember working on an Extreme show (all of them the nicest guys when you met them backstage; even had a talk with Nuno while they were waiting for their bus to drive up), and he didn't have anything else in his rack besides a few effects and the obligatory power attenuators and wireless units. But his amp sound and phasing/flanging all came out of the MP-1. I just don't remember what kind of power amp he used. Could've been ADA's own power amp unit, another tube/solid state hybrid, IIRC. Anyway, when I fired the MP1 Pro up, I heard it react the same way the original unit did. I knew that sound, that graph doesn't lie (not that I doubted that, mind you). As for the Nembrini guys : they're a generous bunch. If you sign into their Audio Central app, you get a ton of very usable free stuff (stomp boxes, rack effects, a tuner,...), including a standalone rig app where you can load all of their gear in a serial chain. I'm hoping they'll update that eventually so you can customise the routing to suit your own needs, including multiple inputs. But for general purpose guitar stuff, you don't need more than this. And they also have sims for the Mesa TriAxis and the Marshall JMP (which I'd love to stack up against the one in Amplitube for comparison), all on sale for ridiculous money. Definitely a lot to check out. Besides the awesome Neural DSP Mk. II C+(+) suite (been playing with that one every day since I bought it; it may appear limited, but I'm still not done with all its possibilities and it sounds like a beast) the best purchase this year.
That switch back and forth between the two was amazing. Slightest brightening in the midrange on the original ADA, but not enough to give a flying fuck about. Most people wouldn't even notice and I only got it on the 2nd and 3rd switches. Backed it up to make sure I heard correctly and then confirmed it on the reveal. But, damn, sooooo close. Definitely couldn't tell which was which in the blind, but just that slight brightness in the mids. Excellent find, Glenn!!!!
Small thing, a LOT of guitarists running the MP-1 (As well as other rack mount preamps) were using dedicated Poweramps, in particular the VHT 2150. The aforementioned VHT is a stereo amp because, well, it was the 80's. Stereo was cool (and still is, although it can really fuck up a mix if you don't know what you're doing). Also other amps like the Marshall 100/100 and Mesa 2:90 were used.
We used to slave an Ampeg bass amp to the ADA. As far as a little more backstory, it was Joe Satriani and Paul Gilbert using the MP-1 that peak everyone's interest since of course in the 80s Satch was teaching around the Bay Area, and of course Paul Gilbert is Paul Gilbert (so there's your Racer-X Scott Travis to Judas Priest connection to the ADA). Fun work horse used in conjuction with a SPX-90 too. The best to you and your wife man! Thanks for the vid. Happy New Year Everyone!
Hi Glenn! I've been following you for about few years, I'm actually an electronic music producer (originally from Turkey and living in Liverpool UK for last 6 years) trying to get into more metal stuff and thanks for the constant inspiration! Also, so glad to see you back!
Hey Glen, that’s a nice little throwback for sure! I’ve been having some fun with it for the last hour. It brought back some great memories of a good friend of mine who used one of these back in the day. We used it often when we were hanging out daily doing the guitar buddy thing. That said, while it’s definitely fun and nostalgic, the modern gear absolutely eclipses it. There’s no way I’d choose it over a 5150 or the countless other options available today. I even did an A/B comparison with the Neural DSP Soldano plugin I’ve been using recently, and while the ADA mp1 holds its own, it’s just not in the same league as the modern stuff. Even a lot of cheap stuff. If it's what I had I could make it work, but the tools we have now are just unquestionably superior.
This thing sounds incredible! I"m one of the odd ducks in that I don't use a 5150 into greenbacks ever. I'm strictly using the amp simms in Cubase and I think my tones are pretty effing good! They don't sound like anybody else but me. Hope you lady is getting better, brother. My heart goes out to you!
I've had an ADA MP1 hardware unit for 4 years and I love it! Instant hair metal tone. I run it into a Marshall Valvestate power amp and that too adds a bit more flavor
ADA sold this rack unit as a preamp pedal! I think you can still buy it. So if you want a real MP1 that’s still available you can get that The plugin sound freaking killer too
Had the video playing thru my truck speakers while i was taking my kid to practice this morning. I couldn't hear a difference between A and B. Sounds like Nembrini nailed it!
A great vid Glenn! The MP-1 is all over the first Smashing Pumpkins album iirc, and I always liked that saturated early 90s rock sound. Underrated for sure. I think ADA reissued it in stompbox format a few years ago, but I couldn't find many clips of it in action so I've no idea how close it gets to an original unit. From what I've heard here, I think I'll just get the Nembrini version and save myself a fortune instead! Best wishes to you and your wife, and happy 2025!
Hey Glenn, it's so good to see you! I hope Julie is doing better, you're in my prayers!!! I don't really pray if I'm being honest but I think about you both often. Please keep us informed, I'm sure I'm not the only one concerned. I hope Julie is able to go home soon!!!
Still playing my MP1! For extreme Metal, it doesn’t have enough gain, but running it coupled with my old Hughes&Kettner Tubeman which I midified, it is just great. Last time I reactivated it, I was completely thrown off by the completely backwards tone settings, when the mids seem to produce completely unexpected results etc, but I still love it. I feel alive, back in time, playing it. I’ll definitely HAVE to get this plugin!
Hey brother...hope things are getting better for you and your family. Prayers for you and your wife my friend..in the middle of many family catastrophes at the moment and it is really tough to keep on keeping on sometimes..stay strong brother.. keep fighting 🙏♥️🤘
Glad to see a new video from you, Glenn! Every time I open up UA-cam now, I am pleased to see one of your videos is right there as a suggestion for my next watch. All the best to you and your family ❤
Wow! That's crazy how spot-on the sim is to the box. Yeah, possibly a bit brighter but nothing a little eq or tone knob couldn't take care of IF you need it. I dig it man! Thanks for the heads-up! Also, and I'm not the guy who goes against the norm because its the cool thing to do, but I have never been a 5150 guy. I'm a Boogie kind of guy. I have the JP2C+ and damn it sounds good! Awesome video man.
I remember when the Rockman first came out and I heard that thing through headphones. Hard to explain what an impact that had on the historical mindset of players using big rigs especially since there wasn't really a viable alternative at the time.
It's going to be a bit before I release an actual NEW video. Please hit a playlist and LET IT PLAY... the easiest way to help is to buy me time. Thanks so much!

Damn that tone is fantastic!! Your A/B shootout sold me. Headed to the Nembrini store because an actual ADA is $500-600 used on Reverb right now. I'm good with paying $30 for a plugin. Good to see you, man!
We appreciate and value you Fricker fam.
HAIL THE ALMIGHTY SPECTRE SOUND🤘💪
At 9:56 I realized you are a scientist, in your own way. Happy New Years, Glenn. I hope your wife recovers quickly.
Good to see a new video Glenn. Looking forward to more as your schedule allows.
Yep, the drive from the ARP 2600. Sending a guitar through a synth will get you a lot of amazing results.
@HerrNox what I read was a serge modular unit -- whatever that is
The ADA MP 1 was used by Adrian Smith on Brave New World. The Wicker Man has literally one of the most badass guitar tones ever.
Good to see you Glenn! Hope you guys are doing better!
Thank God. A week later we drove 3 hours to cut a demo on spec with a producer who loved our music and was helping
set up meetings with A&R people. We set up the amps in the iso closets, and our guitarist started warming up. The Producer stops everything and asks what happened? When he was shown
the techno marvel, he never said a word, just walked over, unplugged it from the guitar and the wall and promptly threw it out in the alley beside the studio.
Still have mine, turned it on a few weeks ago. Still sounds awesome.
Nice to see you back! Hope everything get back to normal soon! Wish you and your wife all the best! Great video!!!
Ps: yeah man Nembrini rocks! Really love their stuff!
Bought the plug-in a few years ago. It doesn't only get all the three channels right, but also the delay and chorus are pretty spot on for those instant clean and lead sounds. I also have the hardware unit, but it's been in storage for ~15 years.
Good to see you my man. Thanks for all you do.
GLEN ,
Please don't change too much , We all love your videos
With a different and stylish (your own) type of informative videos
So thank you very much
I am not a guitarist, but I do love all these guitar based videos you make.
The second i signed in this morning, this was the FIRST video in my recommendations!
The algorithm has NOT forgotten you !
Happy to see you coming back!
Happy New Year and quick recovery to your wife.
Glad to hear you again. Still praying for your your wifes continued recovery
Happy New Year Glen!! I hope your wife gets better soon. I wish you two all the best in 2025. Keep taking care of her and we will all keep the channel alive.
Hi Glenn,
no need to apologize in any way. Glad to see you back!
Hope your wife is doing a bit better. All the best to both of you!
The ADA MP-1 was the gold standard back in the late 80's. I have one, and if it goes south, I'll be scouring the internet the next day, looking for another one.
Great Glenn.. thanks for now raising the price of my favorite preamp 🤫🤣 and for making them more rare
All the best to you both!
@10:00 I was sitting here not being able to tell the difference, thinking we need to see the freq response and maybe a 180 faze shift to see what is going on. Tnx Glenn, glad to see you getting back to a bit of normal.
Great content Glenn - never change man, never change.
Glad to see you posting again Glenn! Hope all is well with you and your family.
SUPER nice to see you back Glenn. Wishing you wife all the best in her recovery.
Just finished the video, that shit is deep man, I appreciate what you are doing, my hat's off to you
That's awesome! We are roughly the same age Glen, and that thing has the 80s sound perfect!
Great to see you back. Glenn!
Glad to see you again Glen, I hope your wife is getting better everyday. Wishing your family the besat as always.
I still love my old ADA preamp.
I’m excited about the new Glenn ⚡️
This thing sounds incredible! I"m one of the odd ducks in that I don't use a 5150 into greenbacks ever. I'm strictly using the amp simms in Cubase and I think my tones are pretty effing good! They don't sound like anybody else but me.
Hope you lady is getting better, brother.
My heart goes out to you!
Good to see ya man, hope all is going well. We'll be here when you get back in full swing
I've had an ADA MP1 hardware unit for 4 years and I love it! Instant hair metal tone. I run it into a Marshall Valvestate power amp and that too adds a bit more flavor
thank you glen. for everything.
the nembrini was great....but the bass tone was absolutely killer...details please
I agree!!
it's his Elements plugin.
Happy New Year #Glenn !!
All the best!
ADA sold this rack unit as a preamp pedal! I think you can still buy it. So if you want a real MP1 that’s still available you can get that
The plugin sound freaking killer too
Had the video playing thru my truck speakers while i was taking my kid to practice this morning. I couldn't hear a difference between A and B. Sounds like Nembrini nailed it!
Bro I hit buy so damn fast. I've been wanting to fuck around with something like this for years!
Glad to see ya back, even if it is a video you recorded earlier. Still hoping for a speedy recovery for your wife. Keep up the great videos Glen.
I have an MP1. Need to get it fixed. One gain stage isn't running.
Hey Glenn, it's so good to see you! I hope Julie is doing better, you're in my prayers!!! I don't really pray if I'm being honest but I think about you both often. Please keep us informed, I'm sure I'm not the only one concerned. I hope Julie is able to go home soon!!!
Glad to see you back, Glenn!
Happy new year Glen and family.
As stated previously by another viewer, our collective effort to keep the youtube algorithm from burying your channel seems to be working - at least from my perspective.
I am in a cover band. I want generic tone. You nailed my rig lol
I remember when the Rockman first came out and I heard that thing through headphones. Hard to explain what an impact that had on the historical mindset of players using big rigs especially since there wasn't really a viable alternative at the time.
I like snarky Glen... but great to have new content as well and I shall be waiting when you guys are ready.Take care and happy new year mate!
Man! it is a relief watching you deal with the mundane! A wonderful great FU from the bottom of my heart!
Good videos and positive energy to you, your wife and show!! Thank you for all you do.
The drums in the samples is what made that mix amazing for me.
I LOVE the transition from 0:48 to 0:52!
All the best!
What a mix!! Beautiful!!! Wonderful musicians as well...
