    Thank you for sharing this video! I garden too and I’m trying to research all the things I can grow in containers. This is very helpful. Thanks for teaching me something new. I hope we can learn more from each other as we grow our gardens and our UA-cam channels!

    Amazing video as always! I got a pack of eggplant seeds from Burpee for $3 and only 1 sprouted! I also picked up that pack of eggplant seeds that you use in the video for 20 cents at Dollar Tree, and funny enough THOSE sprouted. Super helpful video, thanks again!

      I can totally relate to that. With seeds price is irrelevent. Although I want to add that it happens with all seed brands. I don't think it is the brand but that particular seed batch that is bad quality and you cann't get them sprout. I am delighted that you found my video helpful and thank you so much for your comment!😊

      I just had three peppers sprout after 3 months!! I neglected the container I sowed them in and surprise! One of the seeds of that batch came up in a week or so 🤷‍♂️

    Thanks for this video! I planted my black beauty last year but it didn’t grow enough or produce. I brought it in and overwintered it in my front window, I put her out after the frost and once I saw bees in a sunny spot and now I have eggplants galore!! The deer ate all of my flowers last night so I’ll have to find a safer spot for her.

    Hey I see you have great success with your seeds, are you using a greenhouse, indoor grow lights or just putting your plants by a window?

    • @TowardGarden
      @TowardGarden  2 роки тому +1

      I generally don't use grow lights. I have a shed like room in my backyard where I keep my seed trays until the seedlings sprout. As soon as they pop out, I move them outside in indirect sunlight (under a patio umbrella), or 3-4 hours of direct early morning sunlight. I hope this helps and thank you for visiting.

    Is there a reason you started them in one large tray instead of one with separate cells for each plant? FYI I followed your jack-be-little video last year had great success! Thanks for making these videos! The simplicity makes gardening seem much more accessible.

    • @TowardGarden
      @TowardGarden  Рік тому +1

      So glad you found my videos helpful and I am happy that the pumpkins turned out great. Nice work! The way I sow the seeds is just my preference and showing what has been working best for me. By sowing in a trays, I can choose the strongest/healthiest seedlings to prick out, but most importantly, pricking out gives me the opportunity to add fertile soil to the seed mix to make it rich for the seedling growth. If you choose to start in plugs, which you sure can, I suggest to start feeding seedlings with diluted liquid fertilizer when they are 3-4 inch tall so they grow stronger. This is because seed starting mixes usually don't contain any nutrients. And I almost never start in rich soil to minimize the chances of "damping off" which is a fungal disease. I hope this helps and thank you very much for your inspiring comment!😊

    Thank you great video! Is there a reason to transplant than direct sow in bags? Only one plant per bag? I'm using part potting mix, 1 part compost, and one part vermiculite. Is this ok?

    • @TowardGarden
      @TowardGarden  2 роки тому +1

      Transplanting allows you to start earlier in the season and have a better control of the environment for seedling but you can certainly start in bags too. Eggplants have a large root systems and far small pots, planting more than one will effect plant growth and fruit production. And I think your mix will work too. Thank you very much for your comment and happy gardening.

      It may be pollination. Do you have regular flowers area or bees coming to your garden area

    • @TowardGarden
      @TowardGarden  2 роки тому +2

      It can be for several reasons. If you started too early, cold weather may be the main issue. Also, it could be because of dry conditions, pollination issues, soil deficiencies, or underwatering. I hope this helps and thank you for visiting!

    My eggplant sprouted, but I think my soil is off. I had to pull them, but will try again after seeing your video. I didn’t realize you can get fruit that fast. Seen over videos saying it’s best to over winter to get fruit as they don’t produce well first year. You give me hope.

    • @TowardGarden
      @TowardGarden  2 роки тому +1

      Not sure about the overwintering eggplants to get fruits. Although eggplant is a perennial, it is more commonly grown to produce fruits as an annuals. Try to feed with a fertilizer with high P,K in NPK ratios, such as 5-10-10, or use any tomato fertilizers to help set fruits. I hope this helps and thank you so much for your comment!

    When do you start fertilizing seedlings and what do you use?

    • @TowardGarden
      @TowardGarden  2 роки тому

      I usually do not fertilize seedlings, the compost added to the seed mix at the time of pricking out will feed the seedlings. But if you want to fertilize, use diluted fish fertilizers (5-1-1) at half of the suggested rate (1/2 Tbsp per gallon). You can start fertilizing when you have 3-4 true leaves weekly. Thank you for getting in touch.

    what container are you using to start seeds in?

    • @TowardGarden
      @TowardGarden  2 роки тому

      For seed trays, you can use any container that is 2-1/2 to 3 inch deep. In this video, I am re-using grocery mushroom containers that I added holes for drainage. Thanks for visiting.

    They grow 3 times slowier than they should

    • @TowardGarden
      @TowardGarden  5 місяців тому +2

      Well, eggplants are heat-loving plants so don't blame yourself for that. Have you tried cold tolerant varieties? there are some varieties that are quick to mature and are suitable for short summers and do well in cold climate. I am not sure what you can find in your area but here in US some of them to mention are : Orient Express, Hansel, or Gretel (early varieties). Hope you have a better result next time. Thank you for leaving a comment.
