Hi Brad. Been through some of the same stuff as you. I've been working with Python for a few years just with number crunching type stuff but never could get my head around full-stack stuff until I found your videos about 2 weeks ago. Right now I'm learning the MERN. Thanks for all you do. Will be setting up on Patreon, the world needs to keep hearing from you... at least I know I do.

They have helped me out a LOT throughout my education so far. (Studying application development.) Keep up the amazing work. :D
Two points for thought, to those starting out or intimidated by the industry; 1. Don’t think that you have to be a master of coding to make an impact, and don’t confuse peoples guides and tutorials as a sample of complete code mastery. A good number of Senior devs I know struggle just as much with new concepts and tech problems, they just struggle at a more advanced level. Most experience imposter syndrome at some point, and just because your salary and responsibility go up, doesn’t mean that you walk in every day and write an app from scratch before lunch like ’no big deal'. There is learning and effort at every level. If you’re starting out, focus on the challenges at your level. They are exactly what they should be, and they will evolve over time. 2. If you are on the fence about getting into tech, and watch/read online tutorials/guides, don’t be off-put by the complexity. Remember, you’re watching experienced devs who’ve worked hard to hone their skills and understanding. If watching pro sports made people reluctant to try the sport, they wouldn’t exist. Don’t see all of the frameworks/languages/stacks as an unreachable goal, see it as a motivating challenge to try to work towards.

Great video, man. I've definitely felt out of place in the industry at times as well. Have had imposter syndrome, not many personal friends who are programmers, and felt like my accent (southern) would be something that would hold me back if I started recording videos. But you're right. Everything that differentiates you from the crowd is what makes you interesting.
Barely graduated HS (hated it). I was asked today if I'm in law enforcement or military because I have a little bit of muscle, Lol. "No, I'm a computer nerd" I'll admit though, I do feel a bit out of character having a strength in frontend development and not having a massive beard.
Brad, thank you for sharing your story. 🙌 Aspiring developers watch your tutorials and think that you're (or any anyone else they admire) are perfect. The truth is, we're all different, and we're all human. I hope that our industry continues to open up to people of all walks of life.
I can relate to everything you said. I got my GED, did some community college, no degree. Mostly self taught. I have been convicted of a felony. Any company that does a background check won't hire me. I'm a guitar player, kind of thought I'd be a musician when I was younger. I pretty much worked minimum wage while teaching myself and practicing programming knowledge and skills. I did some IT support stuff, then found someone who invited me to come work in their small e-commerce company. From there I was able to get experience and start doing contract work. I've been doing some sort of software or web development for four years now. It's what I enjoy doing, and actually is not the worst career path for someone that has an imperfect history.
Thank you so much for this video and showing sincere honesty(honestly thank you for all of your videos). As a black female and being self-taught, entering this field is intimidating for me all the way around. I have so many insecurities that have come to light with being in this field but I'm trying so hard to not let this bring me down because I'm so passionate about development and I've worked so hard.
Thanks for sharing. I'm currently in a coding boot camp and hope to get into dev role once I'm done. One of the of the issues I have faced so far was fitting in. Glad I ain't the only one.
The way you talk is one of the reasons I love your tutorials so much. Very clear English for me as a non native speaker. Thank you for your sincerity in this and other non-tech videos!
I reaaaaally appreciated everything you've just said, Brad. This is totally important for my personal growth. I've been used to blame myself for not being that fluent on programming even after 10+ years of coding, to feel like an impostor and stuff you've said about addictions, decisions and past. Thanks for your candor, for being this nice and humble human and internet friend.
I enjoy listening for the way you talk because you talk at a street level we can digest. Enjoy you vids man keep it up. I learn from you. Peace from fellow hip-hop head
Thanks for being you man! I am from a similar environment growing up and decided to get my shit straight in my early 30's. Got my CS degree while being a husband, father and army reservist, and I am now in the industry! It was ALOT of hard work but very much worth it! I love your channel and I certainly know where your coming from!
your life back then ....is my life now..thank you really needed that !!!!exactly what i need in maintaining my hopes in trying again...thought i was done for because of my failures in life and the disappointments I've caused...feeling reassured now knowing that some have undergone this path and eventually changed for the better......not proud of my failed past life but i'm blessed by the experience of it....an opportunity some have never went through...thank you sir may you be blessed.....
I really appreciate how your videos go beyond coding tips and tutorials, and make videos like this that address other things. This has been really helpful and videos like these can give a lot of people (including me) the motivation we need to continue coding. Thanks Brad.
Hello Brad, I'd like too thank you for your free tutorials, I can honestly say that I've learnt more from you than anyone else especially on front-end development. One of the many reasons I enjoy your tutorials is because you sound so casual and simple for lack of better words, you make it look easy and your videos are not too commercial like most channels. Lastly your regular non-programming talks are just a thumbs up, I find them encouraging and refreshing plus I like putting a face to the voice. p.s I am Kenyan and can't recognize your Boston accent, I can only tell that you're American. All that matters is you're audible and clear enough..
Wow really inspiring to see you share your personal story . I was in a similar situation when I was in high school(heavy drug use) got my ged at 19, now I’m almost finished with my AA degree in computer science. You got yourself a new sub.
Brad thank you for this video, i really needed to hear this today. I am a 42 yo person just getting into web development as a new career. I have had a lot self doubt and second guessing and I really needed to hear this! You're great man I reference your videos A LOT and also purchased your HTML/CSS and Javascript videos. Best money I ever spent. Thank you for being out there for us new kids!
You are right about the way you talk. I’ m french and the way you talk is soothing. When I listen to your course I have the impression I can understand instantly anything you teach ! Thanks a lot for your work !
I love you udemy courses because you go straight to the point, you go straight to the most common practices no waisting time in shit that doesn't work, I'm a huge fan of you work, thank you for being an inspiration.
I`m glad you decided to release this video. This is the type of videos that keep a community. This gives people a better understanding of you as a person and makes a deeper connection. I started watching your tutorials like 2 months ago and untill now you were just a dude that makes great tutorials but after this video i feel you as one of the assistants that lead my exercises at university. Keep up the great work and if you happen to see this comment, i would be delighted if you share some of you sources of information/news in the web programming field.
To be honest the reason i started following this channel was the way You talk:) I watched one video and I stated that it really fits me. Videos like this one are also very good conent addition, I like them very much. Beside that all You are doing is very high quality and value. I wish You all the best. Greetings from Poland.
You helped me immensely back when I got my job in web development. Your name is known in any web development gig I know. Also, I got my gf into computer science and easily teached her the low-level stuff, binary, assembly, yadda, but she wants to do web dev, and the higher level stuff has been hard to teach through even the basics. So I recommended you, and she told me “I can’t even put to words what is it in his videos that makes it just so easy to understand everything”, which is *exactly* how I felt back then. You have a gift Traversy, and thank you so much for putting it to good use in this industry.
I studied this stuff in college but they don’t really teach all these newer technologies/frameworks in college, they barely teach scripting languages. Your channel literally helped me get my last three jobs in the industry. No joke. I really appreciate your channel. 🚀
Actually Brad, your voice and how you talk is why i actually enjoy watching tutorials from you, i'd mostly see a topic on another channel and i'd legit say to myself i'll wait for Traversy Media to do it. And as always you deliver! Thanks man.
yeah sir you certainly pinpointed the problems occuring in our field.. especially those who talks highly of themselves because they're good at it and ignores everyone that just wanted to learn from them.. This video is a strong message and hopefully will make a big impact to everyone who watches this..
You're a true inspiration man. I'm 22 and I never attended college. I felt like I was getting no where in my life and became very depressed because of that reason. But then I came across Web Development and honestly I feel like this will change my life for the better. Your videos truly give me hope.
I totally agree with what you said in the video and I'm so glad that you decided to share your thoughts on this matter with all of us although you said that you were hesitant about it at first, because I feel that there are a lot of people that need to hear these words and these words can empower them to take a step forward toward what their passion is regardless of their circumstances and background. So thank you so much for putting this video out there. Keep up the good job that you are doing.
Been (self-taught) programming commercially on and off since the mid-90s. Learned more from this video than every other programming video I've ever watched. My background is completely different to yours, but the feelings of 'fitting in' are mirrored exactly. Many thanks for uploading.
You've just answered to all of my questions like you know me, my problems, my fears that I don't belong etc and like you do it exactly for me to help and you know what? -- that has helped....100% Agree with you!....Thank you very much
I can confirm that the way you talk is a big reason I'm watching your videos. You are down to earth and also you keep explaining exactly the scope of Information that I need to understand without being boring. Thanks for making videos Brad. :)
You have my respect putting all that on table without any inhibitions. Way to go man. Your comprehensive web development video has really been a corner stone to kick start my full stack web development journey. Great to have come to know some personal side of your story as well. Keep up the good work .. 👍
Brad, You are a legend. You've taught me, and no doubt countless others so much. Respect for sharing your struggles. I'm 37 and just started web development as a part time side gig and I'm loving it. All the best Peter
Oh mate :) Imagine that one of the reason I stick to your chanel is your perfect diction and I also learn english from listening to you. :) Greetings from The Netherlands .
Brad, That is why I like your style because you are true! You show your mistakes, you show that you are normal, you show you are human. Thanks for who you are. Keep up your hard work. We are benefiting from it greatly.
Dude, this video is perfect, you are pushing me! At the moment I feel so depressed and don’t know where to go with my life, don’t have a lot of money...everything is so hard. Don’t have a degree in CS and sometimes i feel like a alien, especially people here around like „you didn’t go to university you can’t know that“ it sucks. I hate this place, I want to go somewhere else, but first I need to make money. Do you have a discord? I think it would be one of the best communities ever, you can be proud of yourself! You are my superhero!
I appreciate videos like this. They give us a look into the other side of what you built and where you came from. I also appreciate the rest of your content. It's very helpful for someone like me as I make my return to programming. The 2019 guide was great. I took a lot of notes. 👍🏿
Friend really thank you, this video has motivated me a lot, I've always felt like you mention in the video. I come from a very poor family, I started programming from an early age and to help my mother I had to start working, I always looked at other people and I realized that they were not as I was. What you say is really inspiring and makes me feel part of this.
My God Brad I hope I accomplish half of what you have by age 37 (I'm 32). I'm from Brazil and have spent the last 15 years trying to graduate from college to jumping from course to course just to realize that I wanted to have finished the first which was CS. I am brazillian, now 32y.o., hate my day job and not a day goes bye that I don't hate the shitty things in my country and that I wish to go to America and have a job on the tech industry... Your videos are an amazing inspiration and have helped me close my ears and study hard every day so I can go he self-study route. Thank you so much for your tutorials, courses (I have all but the Django one... not really into Python yet) and especially this candid real life videos!
I hardly comment on youtube videos, I've been worried about how my love for EDM and Dj'ing would affect me as a programmer, this just made my day, I needed to hear it, many thanks :)
Enjoying your Modern HTMl l and CSS course, Brad. I'm about half way through the hotel website section right now. Really looking forward to learning Flex, Grid, and Sass, as well as your walk-throughs on deploying the sites to shared hosting and Netlify. Thanks, man.
Hey brad thanks so much from this brother I’m from Eastie and have been following you for years... this video helped me be more proud of who I am in this industry as a minority male who doesn’t dress, look, and talk like other programmers
He just said wise words peoples, I see someone is trying to missunderstand him and even dislike this vdeo, thats shame. This guy saved me many times and I admire your work! Greetings from Albania! Thank's for existing Brad! 👍🏻
I’m from kenya 🇰🇪 and been following you Matt and it’s been helpful in my freelance career I felt I was not meant for this but looking at the way you think 💭 makes me move on every day God bless you Matt
Your the best man! Thanks for this encouragement! I would love more stories like this. Without this context, I just think your a coding beast, but this provides a wider range of who you are as a person.
Come to think of it now, I think this is one of the reasons, if not the biggest one, that has always prevented me from working with programming effectively. I have always studied and participated in groups trying to "be" others, trying to be part of a group of people, to be recognized for something that I am not. You touched on a fundamental point these days and I think this discussion will help a lot of people. Thank you, Brad. Your simple, focused speech is what gives you success, because it clears our minds a lot.
Thanks for this video bro, I am just starting out as a freelancer...no job experience...studied the wrong subject for 3 years at varsity and only now doing what I have always wanted to do ..have HTML, CSS and JAVASCRIPT under my belt but no experience with them...your words are really a motivating factor, to know that you can make a turn around and overcome a lot of the fears that you have is really clarifying and makes me want to do the best I can...thanks for your content and your perspective on things, may the universe bring your manifestations right to your doorstep and may you continue to grow in your success and have many opportunities to expand yourself wherever and however you feel. Peace
Man you can't really imagine how much you've helped me to motivate myself to ignore all those things that used to make me feel like programming wasn't for me. Now I got a job doing this and I'm learning more and more everyday. Thanks Brad, you're the man!
Thank you for all the content! You really stand out from the legions of programmers on UA-cam that just spill out the same type of "motivational" marketing quotes and nothing truly helpful.
I have been enjoying your videos for various programmings. I have to say I like you more because you shared your past and your thoughts. I am thinking of recommending this video to some of my young kids around me. Thank you for your sharing your experience and thoughts...
Thanks for sharing this video. Since I subscribed to your channel I've learned a lot, and it helped me get a job as a developer. Something that I suffer constantly is the "imposter syndrome", but gradually I am convincing myself of my abilities and videos like yours motivate me to move on. I wish you all the success in the world. Greetings from Brazil.
Hey Brad! I am a programmer here in the Philippines! I was also a punk when I was in my high school years. You really inspired me because I felt your experience in life which I am also a punk teenager in the past and right now I am a Senior Developer, your tutorials really helped me a lot! I also wanted to work alone because I cant stand people that has attitude of putting you down. Now, I am really eager to pursue my dream to become like you! To create contents related to programming tutorials using our native language and go back to become a freelancer. Thank you for inspiring me more! I’ll do it next year once I finish my contract! 😊
Bloody hell Brad, your story is inspiring! I am trying to learn JavaScript and whilst I enjoy it, I am struggling, not so much with JavaScript as being motivated and not being distracted at home. I didnt know you had overcome so much adversity to get where you are today.
Wow! I think you're an Awesome instructor and programmer. I bookmark all your videos. However, I'm putting a special bookmark on this one because I plan to watch a few times a week. Great motivation!!! I too, have encountered cocky developers in my time where I either wanted to find another career or never work for a company again. I truly believe, if we work like ants so to speak (lol), working together instead of against each other, we all would solve more problems and get things done. Happier and less stressful. You're the man Brad! Thanks for your honesty and outlook in life. Great video!
You are so sincere and real. You inspire me endlessly. I am very grateful for all your videos. Special thanks for such videos, because not everyone knows how to sincerely share their opinions and experiences. It is really very valuable. And your speech is very nice to listen to. Thanks for sharing. I'm currently in a coding boot camp and hope to get into dev role once I'm done. One of the of the issues I have faced so far was fitting in. Glad I ain't the only one.
Paul Cruz Best of luck my dude.
Ray Griffithz you’ll get there. Look for help. You are watching this so that is definitely a good sign
I really appreciate how your videos go beyond coding tips and tutorials, and make videos like this that address other things. This has been really helpful and videos like these can give a lot of people (including me) the motivation we need to continue coding. Thanks Brad.
Just like you mentioned in the video. You explain the code really understandable that is why everyone loves your videos. Keep going friend!
I have nothing but mad respect for you! For the life of me, I can't thank you enough for all the amazing work you've done!
You inspire me man. I didn't do a fourth of what you did, but i always look at people who've been through a lot and bounced back incredible
You're the best teacher on youtube, hands down. Keep being awesome!!!
thank you so much!!!!!! i'm 50 yrs old and kinda bp and i'm learning how to code...
Very powerful and honest speech. Thank You man, keep it up right way. Sometimes all you need is dose of motivation so I got it here!
Thanks! I like elegant clothes, so was worrying that not wearing hoody could be a problem :D
Wow dude, you are helping more people than you think. This message was for me today. I needed to hear that.
Very humble, very real. Inspirator and hope giver to those in need of encouragement in/about life. I am a big fan. Kudos!
This is really uplifting. Thank you Brad for lending your great skills toward sharing what you've learned in code and in life.
-- that has helped....100% Agree with you!....Thank you very much
I'm your fan Brad! Keep going with that mindset, I really enjoy your way of thinking, it should be common mindset in this industry.
Brad,
You are a legend. You've taught me, and no doubt countless others so much. Respect for sharing your struggles. I'm 37 and just started web development as a part time side gig and I'm loving it.
All the best
Peter
You're a genius to me and unique in your own way Brad, and your tutorials have helped my life vastly.
Thanks Brad. I was having a bad day today. This really helped.
Glad it helped, hope your day gets better :)
You are so humble and a terrific teacher. Thank u for showing us a different side of it. You have talent and balls
We love you man! Much continued success to you and the family keep the smiles comming everything else will follow.
Wow! this is a much-needed video! thanks for being direct and saying it how it is - without the fluff
Enjoying your Modern HTMl
l and CSS course, Brad.
Brad. Excellent video as always. Thank you for all your help. It means the world. Have a good day.
Peace
I love these videos, Brad. Great addition to the tutorials, I really appreciate the openness and honesty. Keep up the great work!
Man you can't really imagine how much you've helped me to motivate myself to ignore all those things that used to make me feel like programming wasn't for me. Now I got a job doing this and I'm learning more and more everyday. Thanks Brad, you're the man!
I love you for you being yourself and honesty. This is your greatness. Please keep it up.
Thank you for all the content! You really stand out from the legions of programmers on UA-cam that just spill out the same type of "motivational" marketing quotes and nothing truly helpful.
Wow, takes a lot to release such a personal video. I appreciate it brother.
We are proud to have you on UA-cam as our mentor ! 😊
What a decent man this channel deserves alot more attention...
Hey Brad, I am guy with Cerebral Palsy and Everytime Your videos and Tutorials boost me up and I believe I can do it.
Dude thank you very much for your help and your videos, you don’t know how much you have been helping my life and my family
Great you totally turned your life around. Amazing you've gone on to skilfully teach and motivate thousands, probably millions of others.
Bloody hell Brad, your story is inspiring! I am trying to learn JavaScript and whilst I enjoy it, I am struggling, not so much with JavaScript as being motivated and not being distracted at home. I didnt know you had overcome so much adversity to get where you are today.
You are really a good & strong man Brad,
God bless you :)
Best regards from Ukraine!❤
4:36 love the pop up Brad! Lol! Great content as always.
Thank you Brad for your openness. You've been very helpful all this years, even more, an inspiration. Respect!
I respect you for your honesty and thank you for all the videos you have made. I have learned a lot from you .
Your words help me on this moment. Thank you, my man. God bless you and your family.
Good video Brad! Thanks for your support, your videos are awesome
This is awesome stuff Brad. You are breaking stereotypes. Keep going brother. Life is too short to be bothered about what others think. Great stuff.
