    Thank you for this.
    One of my clients has been complaining to me that the slit of the dresses I make her always loose for the first wear. I was thinking of how to secure the stitch further and professionally and then I stumbled upon your video on my search. This looks like the answer to my question and I'll definitely try it.
    Anyone has any other suggestions, kindly comment it please

  • @ProfessorPincushion
    @ProfessorPincushion  12 років тому +1

    Yes you could. For a similar to this, just make an exact duplicate out of your lining fabric. Both layers would get basted at the waistline, right before you put in the waistband. Do the vent extension for both layers separately but I always tack or slipstitch the lining slit to the main slit to keep them together.

    Thanks for the video, easy to follow and clear instructions! It was a refresher for me, as I have done the kick pleat a few times many years ago...however, I learned something new... to do a curve when cutting it out, instead of right angles. This may seem a simple thing to many, but to me it makes a whole lot of sense to do it....so thank you again, for the video. xoxo

    Sure, the easiest way is to undo one of your seams, either the center back seam or one of your side seams. Just undo however long you want your slit to be. I would put a few tacking stitches though to keep your seam on the inside of the skirt.

    I want to thank you also for such a clear instructional video for making the kick pleat - THANK YOU! I want to adapt it to my skirt pattern. Can you tell me how wide your kick pleat is? Or how far out do I go from my center back seam line?

    • @ProfessorPincushion
      @ProfessorPincushion  7 років тому

      when drafting my pattern, I go out about 2". the length of the slit can really be whatever you decide. For something like this, it might be 8" or so.

    Hi! Great tutorial, thank you very much for creating it; forgot loads since school. It seems like sewing a piece with lining would be a different story, how would one go about sewing lining to a vent? Thank you again!

    • @ProfessorPincushion
      @ProfessorPincushion  10 років тому +2

      CAL Pittman I would create a lining exactly like the outter shell. They'll get basted together at the waistline before putting on the waistband. I would make the lining slit and hemline just a little shorter/smaller than the outter shell at these points. When the outter shell hemline is finished, you can hand tack these two elements together. Hope this helps :)

    so it is how to make your own pattern when you get the premium but I'm only a beginner I have never made a pattern would this be something that I could actually do as a beginner?

    • @ProfessorPincushion
      @ProfessorPincushion  10 років тому +1

      It's $5 monthly but there's no contract so you can pay for one month or several months. If you start with something like a basic skirt, it's not as hard as you think, but I recommend having a few commercial patterns under your belt before attempting it. When you're ready, come check it out :)

    • @ProfessorPincushion
      @ProfessorPincushion  10 років тому

      Our $5/month premium membership is all inclusive and if there's a pattern associated with the tutorial, it doesn't cost anything extra. For our premium skirt tutorials, like basic skirt or pencil skirt, there are no pattern downloads. Instead these are pattern drafting tutorials, showing you how to create your own pattern based on your measurements.

    Can I add a kick pleat to a skirt that is already finished?

    • @ProfessorPincushion
      @ProfessorPincushion  11 років тому

      The issue is that if you just cut your skirt, you're not going to have that extra panel of fabric to turn to the inside so that the skirt looks finished. I recommend that you make this alteration to your pattern before cutting your fabric out.

  • @tywilson7153

    What if you want to avoid stitching down the vent 1/4" edge and the stitching showing on the right side of the fabric??

    • @ProfessorPincushion

      if you do a small hand stitches, they tend to be less noticeable than machine stitches.

  • @LadyDiuto

    Pls how do you cut the back of the skirt to make allowance for vent extension and dart?

    • @ProfessorPincushion
      @ProfessorPincushion  11 років тому

      you need to do it to the pattern before the cutting out your fabric. At the bottom of the center back seam, you can add that extra extension by 2" and I normally go up the skirt by about 8". If you want to actually see me draft it, you can check out our premium tutorial for pencil skirt pattern but it's only available on our site and you have to sign up for premium.
