This was during the Vietnam War. Jimi incorporated the sounds of war into his rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. It was a very powerful statement made by Jimi.

@@JunebugsReactionsyep, because he either got caught in a stolen car or caught with stolen clothes, the judge gave him a choice, jail or the army. This was actually a common thing back then. The army seemed better than jail, but he didn't go because he wanted to.
Jimi always said publicly that he was discharged because he broke an ankle. Which was a lie.
The smoking gun's site has all of his military papers. He did everything he could to get out, missing bed check multiple times, falling asleep while on duty, one of his superiors wrote that jimi required supervision at all times, finally he intentionally got himself caught jacking it in the latrine while on duty. Several of his platoon mates and his superiors all filed reports stating he should be kicked out, and he was, and that was in 61 or 62.

@@JunebugsReactions unfortunately I don't see any videos of the actual performance, which is a crying shame. The only video I see that plays the whole 12 minute song from start to finish is one that uses actual Vietnam combat footage instead of showing the band playing. But that performance has got to be Hendrix's magnum opus. It's so deeply moving and haunting. He really poured his heart and soul into that particular performance. The audience is totally quiet for the whole song and then they errupt into huge applause when it ends.
There are so many awesome guitarists and musicians these days. But in spite of all the amazing technical skill out there I've never had anyone reach down into my soul like that particular performance does. It's on another level. But it's much better when you can see him actually playing it.

Please react to Jimi Hendrix black and white video “Hey Joe” German tv show. 1965(?).
Please don’t be too shocked about the zombie teenage audience. I’m sure they were told no dancing, and this was waaaay before drugs, weed, hippies. Jimi was 50 years ahead of the times and he blew their minds that day.
There’s also another video I love. In color, white background. Acoustic guitar blues song. His clothes are amazing. He had an incredible sense of style. The Mods in London introduced cutting edge fashion in the Sixties and he absorbed the creativity.
Most men can’t even choose a tie. His clothes should be in a museum. Plus he was soooooo easy on the eyes!

What do you mean by "just 50 years ahead of the times..." He was of his time using techniques and methods that had been developed over the previous 30 years since the origins of the blues and were common at the time. He fused those techniques with the new PA system technology. He did it brilliantly.

Try France in 67. Audiences back then sat completely still so they could appreciate what they were seeing and hearing, not jumping around like a bunch of dammed fools today.
