    One of the most eye opening experiences (pun intended) for me was experiencing the sim in vr for the first time. You really get a sense of the size of the cockpit and your height from the ground - which is especially awesome in something like a 747.

    The zoom controls your "eye" zoom and everything your "eye" sees. I find that adjusting my "head" position so the scenery outside the flightdeck deck is not affected. If there were two different zoom types, like inside zoom and outside zoom, I think that would be ideal.

    no one seems to have noticed that if you look at the seats and the floor they appear to be fully retracted. I expect they move forward depending how long your legs are and therefore the default seat position is far too rearward?
    I think moving the pilot position forward (not zoom) would be better so the outside zoom is not effected like it is now. The problem with 70% zoom (which I do) is it zooms outside as well.

    It’s funny on the GA aircraft, until I started flying in real life I didn’t realize how xtremely low the camera is in msfs. Real world your position is moved much higher in the airplane and much more “zoomed in”

    I used to use a similar setup to what you showed, however I found it hard to judge my flare in that view. I have started using the "default" more zoomed out view during approach, with minor adjustments.
    I've found that those settings have the horizon line sitting around the middle horizontally of my monitor, and this really helps when trying to judge the pitch of the aircraft visually.

    One thing I found after a real flight in the cockpit while being a flightsimmer is that the runway looks absolutely huge. Even while being like 15 nm out it still felt like about 5 nm. In the same way, when I heard the 1000 foot call it felt like we where at about 300 foot in terms of distance to the runway. Since then I like to zoom in as far as possible and then just move the camera back so I can see all the instruments. Don’t know if this is 100% correct, but I’d love to hear someone’s opinion about it that has a little experience.

    It is interesting that the FOV in general practice a pilot bias would be looking out the window and lowering eyes to view the displays, and to head tilt/physically look downward to view the lower instruments and centre pedestal, as you have mentioned, if I interpret you correctly?
    Also this implies centre director and overhead switch gear is within easy reach.
    I imagine this could be achieved more easily and realistically in VR?
    I do wonder whether it’s common practice for pilots to set the seat further back (and perhaps lower) to mimic a more typical flightsim instrument biased FOV during the cruise phase of the flight?

    imho PMDG got it quite right in their default view of the 737 series. What I do ever since with every new plane, is create a custom camera.cfg file (save a custom default pilot view) with the same initial zoom value as the PMDG 737s. To do this, edit the camera.cfg value InitialZoom=0.354. It yields in pretty much what your showing here actually. This has the advantage, that you get the same zoom level on all your fleet, based on the same baseline. Modifying the zoom level in the GUI will zoom in or out based on what the devs have set as ititial zoom level - dunno if that makes sense, hard to explain ;-). For me this is quite important, since the zoom level will not only influence your FOV but also the "sence of speed" since your outside world is also zoomed in or out. Thus the importance to have it more or less identical on all planes.

      Agreed, Í'm currently trying to get into the Fenix A320 and the cockpit view never feels proper, but the PMDG 737 just feels right. • @mdhazeldine
    @mdhazeldine 3 місяці тому +1

    I think a lot of this has to do with monitor size, resolution and how close you sit to the screen. The base of a 737 cockpit windshield pane (either front left or right) is 84cm, which translates roughly to a 37 inch monitor diagonal, so ideally you'd probably want a monitor of about 32in or bigger (I have a 32), to avoid everything looking too small. I also fine that 4k resolution really helps with reading small text on glass cockpit screens without having to zoom in too much, although even with my 4k monitor, I still kinda want to look into undocking displays onto an iPad, at least for the PFD and ND. I also find a head tracking device really helps because you can set the zoom further in and just look around and move your head closer to zoom in a bit, which feels more natural than a hat switch and scroll wheel. The only annoying thing about a smaller monitor, with head tracking and addons like FS Realistic, is you can't see the FCU displays without looking to the right, and when you go to control them with the mouse, the click spots are quite small and it can be really hard to change the values as the cockpit is moving around under your cursor. I've found that setting up my Loupedeck live with Spad.Next has worked really nicely with the Phoenix for this, but I still can't see the FCU displays when looking straight ahead unless I zoom out more, so minFCU is looking quite appealing now that Phoenix have just announced full support is coming soon.

  • @lairdperkins

    75% zoom in MSFS seems to be equivalent to 1.0 in FSX. That provides the most “natural” FOV and more importantly doesn’t distort the runway shape. It’s like the 35mm lens of MSFS. To zoom that far in though, you do need to invest in head or eye tracking to be able to easily look around the cockpit and adjust your head position so you can see over the nose. You should have to look down to see more than the top row of instruments.
    It’s really hard to beat VR though if you want to fly like real life… the FOV is exact and having a stereoscopic view makes judging landings considerably easier.

  • @blackkkasd

    This is something i always wondered but also i'd like to have your opinion on the overall "geometry" cause by zooming in and out. For example if you look at the windshield frame, both the left one and the center one where the 3 balls are, when zoomed out at standard value it looks way too slanted which i don't think it's the correct shape and perception. Of course this zooming in and out il also going to change the sense of speed you get when using the simulator, when taxing at the same speed for example, different zoom levels will give you different speed perception.
    Would be nice to have your input on which zoom level "seems" closer to reality for you in terms of speed perception and overall cockpit geometry. Thanks!

    I use authentic FOV for my 32" monitor at 70cm, it's H52.4 V30.9(about x1.10 in P3D), quite narrow, I can only see outside window or PFD/ND, choice one. That's why I'll only fly with TrackIR, and I also have a auxiliary monitor under my main one for PFD/ND pop-out or AirManager dash.
    When doing cockpit prep I might zoom out, but I'll keep authentic FOV for TO/LD.
    I do have VR but I didn't use it much for civil airplane, due to performance and limitation on access EFB/doc etc... I do use it for sim racing, dogfight, and Helicopters though, much better than flat screen.

    This is tricky to explain but I wonder if it would be possible to offset the center of the field of view toward the left of the screen, (or the right) so you could sit off to one side of the monitor and see the flight instruments centered , and when you look towards the other side of the screen you can see the engine instruments with a sense of perspective. Why? I feel that if you have the PFD or flight instruments completely centered, half the screen is basically wasted with the window frame, the clock etc.

    • @A330Driver

      Hi, that’s possible in the MSFS Camera settings menu. You can manipulate the default positions there. However when you compare the position of the seat with the position of the flight instruments, you will notice that the plane is indeed designed with a certain offset. That goes for both, Boeing and Airbus indeed.

  • @christoph2517
    @christoph2517 3 місяці тому

    Hi Emanuel, it would be very helpful if you maybe could provide real numbers from a A320 cockpit, so we could adjust our FOV accordingly. Only two numbers are needed. Your eye distance to center of the PFD (or what ever is in the horizontal center at the display height) once you are seated correctly and for example the distance between the upper left corner of the PFD glass display and the upper right corner of the navigation glass display. That would enable us to check out the real FOV and maybe with big screens like 55inch or larger adapt accordingly. Not sure what you are flying right now. B737 NGX would be very welcome too. 😊 Thanks a lot! Christoph

I sit a little bit on the left side of the screen, so I have to move my eyeballs to the right to see the ECAM, but I don't have to move my head or more the view in the sim.
    I have owned a TrackIR for probably a decade now, but barely use it. Having to keep your head still is not for me. I look at charts, my notepad, other screens etc. all the time. If you do the "field of vision" test with your hands as you suggest, what you will learn is that your horizontal FOV is about 190 degrees. Not exactly small. But irrelevant. You can't have and don't want peripheral vision with a computer monitor because it is just a window directly in front of you. Theoretically, what you want is a field of view whose angle matches the angle formed by the corners of the screen and your face, which varies by size of monitor and how far you sit. If you had a 180 wraparound screen, you'd want 180. The monitor that I'm typing this at is 30" from my nose and is about 20" wide which works out to about a 37 degree FOV. I find that natural and can usually read the instruments pretty well, and I don't see the barrel distortion when looking around with TrackIR as I do when set to the 50-ish degrees used by some devs. It is also about the FOV provided by the 50-55mm lenses that used to be called "normal" lenses in 35mm film photography. But I wouldn't mind having a bigger screen!

    This. Always disliked the extreme zoomed out (and warped) perspective some sim pilots use. I know they do it to have more of the external world visible in single monitor setups/no head tracking, but it just looks so 'off'

    Sorry, I generally like your content but in this case, the title is a bit misleading imo. This doesn’t tell us anything about a „most realistic“ fov approach or any scientifically rooted view concept. This basically tells us that depending on the size of our screen we should just adjust the zoom/view to see everything properly and to our liking. Title says „most realistic“, but you close with the hope this makes it „a little bit more realistic“. I was expecting something else tbh…
