Thank you, Bob. Other than for my own kids and grandkids, I've never been a teacher. None of my videos are scripted. I just sit down, start recording, and talk as if there was someone sitting next to me. I try to anticipate questions that I know I would have and try to remember to answer them along the way. That's how I learn, so I try to convey that in a tutorial.

This has been extremely useful! I've been struggling to get a vector on a complex cutout to close so I could profile it and this solved that problem with just a few clicks. Luckily, I didn't pull ALL my hair out before finding this vid.

I am trying to superimpose a provincial flag over province for a project I'd like to make but am struggling with exactly the problems you mention in your video. It's my hope to solve this problem asap so I can make chips n sawdust!
Very good video. And as always very explanatory. I mostly use the weld vectors instead of the scissors, it is faster, but gives less control than the scissors tool. In some cases it is very useful but sometimes it welds things you don't want to weld and leaves unwelded what you want to weld. Keep up the good work.

Mr. Lindsay, I know you are always running your own projects, but I've stumbled into a scenario that I can't completely figure out how to solve. Two issues: 1. I'm running 5 different "toolpaths", on my 4th path, doing a finishing cut on a detailed object, I cannot adjust the depth. Its is running deeper than I would like it. I figure this is based on my material setup being at .75, which is also the depth it is cutting to. I'd prefer it to be no deeper than .625. And #2. I am making a reducing a cut, leaving raised letters. My first cut is the initial depth that I want the top of the letters. The second cut brings the entire project to the final layer/depth I wanted (.625) and jumping ahead to the last cut, it is "cleaning up" the letters in the project. I'm finding that with a previous cut, I had used an off-set, but the final cut will not clean-up some of the spaces between the letters. Is there a way I can run another cut to just go in and remove the scraps? I'll be happy to send my file for you to view. THANKS! ~Corey

I stopped watching the Vcarve videos when I saw Mark's channel. Mark seems to have an in depth knowledge of the software but also is a cnc operator so he knows what trouble you might run into. But most importantly he shares this knowledge.
Very informative video, I hope I will remember all these steps when I encounter this issue. Just a small critique, you did not explain how to create layers at the onset as the file already came with layers then you added one.
Those layers were created by the person who designed the file. I just added the layers you saw me add in the video. This file was sent to me for help with the problem, and the man who created it let me use it for the video.
Mark, as I’m beginning to learn this more and more, I’m wondering if it’s a best practice to normally just use layers in my design thinking. As I’m practicing, I find I often have intersections and open vectors and it would seem using the layers would certainly help. Since I’m new, I don’t have any bad habits YET, so wondering if this is a good habit to use. I find your videos very useful, so thank you.
I think it's a good habit to get into on complex designs that may possible have vectors that overlap or cross one another. For more simple designs, it's not 100% necessary. Still, it's a good habit to get into, like you're saying.
Is it possible to take only the .010 cut only without taking the last bottom cut with it? we used to do that on CNC milling machines when cutting metal. That relieves any bottom pressure and leaves a great smooth cut on the profile only.
It's just not needed with wood, Tom. I routinely cut all the way through the material in 2, 3, or 4 passes, and it comes out just fine. Wood is a whole 'nuther critter from metal.
Many thanks for teaching, very informative. During the profile node editing I noticed the curves had hundreds of nodes. For machining, should this curves have been smoothed?
Thanks Kevin. You're right, I should have applied curves to those vectors to reduce the number of nodes (points.) I talked about that in another video, because I needed to hurry this project up for the person asking the question. He was told to reduce the number of nodes, and he did.
Great information Mark, I do have a question about changing bits, how do you change bits with out loosing your z clearance I’ve try it and since my bits vary in height I always have issues?? Can you help
