In today’s episode of Figuring Out, we have Dinesh Thakkar in conversation with Raj Shamani. He is the managing director of Angel One which is a Fintech company providing broking services, margin trading facilities, research services, depository services, investment education, and financial products distribution to its clients.
In this episode, we started talking about his journey of starting Angel One from scratch, and how he took 1.5cr-2crs from his friends, and how their investment has turned into 100s of crores. He also shared how Harshad Mehta's scam affected the market and how he came out of it. He then shared how his company is growing around 80-85% consumer base every year and how much profits they make. We discussed what went wrong in Paytm, what is the new generation investing in, and three tips that he would like to give any young person who is just starting their investment journey.
Towards the end, we talked about the mistakes people make while investing and what are the things they should avoid. We then talked about why he became the associate partner in IPL and what is his strategy or thought process behind it. Then we talked about the different prices of various collaborations in IPL and how he never invested in equity himself. We ended our conversation by talking about his car collection. It's so obvious that things are not improving. I'm looking at high-yield dividend stocks. Selling 200k worth of equities is stupid without reinvesting it. I might turn to cash soon if I don't invest it. Any particulars? (Buying bonds or CDs is not for me)
The economy and stocks are two different things these days
I also think everyone needs a Margin of Safety in their portfolios and just remember, It's time in the market versus timing the market.

There are a handful of experts in the field. I've experimented with a few over the past years, but I've stuck with ‘’AMBER KAY WRIGHT” for about five years now, and her performance has been consistently impressive. She’s quite known in her field, look her up.
Investing in alternative income streams that are independent of the government should be the top priority for everyone right now. especially given the global economic crisis we are currently experiencing. Stocks, gold, silver, and virtual currencies are still attractive investments at the moment.

I really like your podcast. Very informative but still I feel you should not close your hands when you are asking or listening the response from the guest. Because the guest is so involved in the discussion but from your side it looks like less involvement. It's just suggestions but you are really doing fab job. Your level of content quality is growing very well day by day. I am sure you wil be India's no 1 podcost host.
Financial planning is like navigation. If you know where you are and where you want to go, navigation isn't such a great problem. It's when you don't know the two points that it's difficult..
People dont understand that the prices of things are never going back down. This inflation is deeper than we think. Those buying groceries are well aware that the real inflation is much over 10%. The increments dont match our income, yet certain investors still earn over $365,000 in stocks and assets. Wish I could accomplish that.
Very possible! especially at this moment. Profits can be made in many different ways, but such intricate transactions should only be handled by seasoned market professionals.

Dividend yield of many good stocks in India is far better than the rental yield of properties even in metros like Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi NCR. Also the liquidity is much higher in case of equity products (direct stocks, MF's) compared to Real Estate. Hence there is no better substitute other than equity in Indian Market. Even the worst performing long term equity MF has delivered a CAGR of more than 13% in the last 30 year period!
