- I believe that there is no Land Rover without diff or half shaft blown through years of usage. It is quite regular for the owner who starts driving that vehicle off-road. Some time ago this truck (Land Rover 110 2.5 TD) got stuck in deep snow away in the mountains. The first test there showed that difflock was working well. When engaged into the gear the front propshaft was spinning but there was no drive in front axle ... neither one wheel was turning while on ground ... the fault was there. We were concerned that one drive member (flange) have lost splines so that shaft turn inside it but that wasn't the case. A few days later we came to recover the truck and managed to drive 200 km long distance to home using its rear drive only with diff lock engaged. There was no need to detach the front propshaft because no noise was heard from front axle so no further damage was expected. At home, front drive is tested with jacking one wheel at a time (truck not running diff lock in and handbrake on) ... normally we should not be able to turn the jacked wheel. But RH wheel was turning what proved that the half shaft or diff was wrong.

In my case i got a broken diff on the back but guess what ? High range diff lock took us home safely by only using front axle my wife and kids now think rovers are bullet proof 😆 Now when that happen to a jeep and nightmares became a reality!! Wheels come out with tires and half shafts .It pull apart brakes lines, and you not going anywhere after that my friend chriss learned his lesson the hard way when that happened to him with a wrangler . All this because jeeps dont have the 5 bolts half shaft flange,and instead the fitted a chip c clip

It is real shame its production is left to be destroyed that way.

Nice comment. I have to say that I am not a professional, but the necessity of my pursuit of my affinities with the wild and nature has forced me to solve the problems I encounter on my own. Very nice and informative video. While I've broken a number of rear half shafts over the years (88" & 109" Series IIA & III), I've never had a front axle shaft break. Thanks for this first-rate video on how to accomplish this repair work!
Oh, I remember well those 109" and 88" (1971) especially the one that served me through 12 years covering about 470 000 km ... there is something in those trucks, indeed. My uploads on how did I use them through time tell something more. Take a time and check the rest of my uploads here, hope you can find at least some of them interesting.
This white one 110" serves me 21 year already, now in hands of my younger son.
I have never had an axle shaft break but my son experienced it on his first serious trip in the snow. Nice experience that he filmed and shared on this network.

Luckily, I managed to solve quite serious problems (as you probably noticed) in time and left them behind in 2017 hopping that soon I'll be free to start my planned journeys, you could guess where to. That will all calm my life down a bit and open enough space to continue searching over my archive footage covered with too much dust. Simply I decided to "get rid of something that is far too long kept away from those whom it was intended to be shared. The public ... as I mentioned many times ... for the sake of better understanding of wolves in general. That way all my efforts in carrying the cameras all those years through will get right sense. You are always welcome.

Life is full of hardship and such unforeseen malfunctions and the only way is to turn everything into a bright side. I personally did not have the choice but to get the job myself. With the camera that "supervised" me, I worked more patiently, more cautiously and even more precisely and managed to record all for those who could enter into a similar problem on their vehicle.
I believe the effort paid off and will help someone, I hope.

Honestly I expected it all to be harder to repair but with the little help of YT videos I collected some knowledge and advice ... on hands the copyright remains mine. The worse was, beside purchasing, the cost and waiting mail for the spares needed the cold that entered into my bones. Although sunny it was freezing while working under the truck. But again, that old pile of bolts and nuts served me well for "centuries" I would say, ... you understand that well. (ywm)

They have always been single piece on the rear !!!!! Try putting single piece on the front, How would you turn the wheels !!!!!?????
While not a fan of busted knuckles and greasy hands there is a satisfaction to being able to repair your own equipment. This was a big job and a great opportunity as you said to refresh the front end so it can carry you on another 20 years of adventures! Best wishes for the new year and beyond. Hope the young man has been taught the mechanical skills, I know my son has come to despise doing mechanical, but knows it is within his abilities and does not hesitate to save the money by doing what is necessary. The bird says you done good!! lol
I knew that you would easily recognize possible consequences after such the creative artwork out in the open, especially during December but it is finished and problem solved in time. I enjoyed a lot so I almost named that video as ... "culinary recipe for pre-holiday days: screws and nuts in oil with a fried half-shaft" ... served cold but delicious. Not exact moment for such work.
To say the truth my son really joined me repairing that as he is quite well introduced in mechanics (fan of motorcycles) and we seriously ended what had to be done. ... swivel pins, bearings, seals, lubricants, all adjusted as recommended etc. Both completely in grease and oil. With some knowledge, good will, some courage and luck it is possible to travel with this truck wherever you want. Hope soon the bird will be able to fly high and free if it will not decide to return home as one of the same kind I released some time ago.

In fact I left that truck to my son so that he can continue visiting those mountains on at least something close to my way. I invested quite a lot of years discovering , enjoying and adoring their beauties and respecting them. Hope the truck will serve him as long as it will be able to. I can always ask him to give me a ride.

Glad you noticed my animals, they always help me to stay calm and solve problems found properly so that repair is done properly ... to last for another few years. Lying beneath the car I think of miles crossed with that "pile of metal with nuts and bolts" I even find a peace of tree from the wild areas I know well, small stone that reminds me of the spot where I have seen my wolves for the last time ... the truck keeps memories and it deserves to be treated well 'cause it served me the best way. That truck took me where no one would believe it is possible and took me back all the way home. Besides I would really like it to serve the same way to the one who will continue using it in the future ... I believe it will be my son. Hope he will be satisfied with this good old working horse. Reliable it is, indeed. John D.Wells from Cumbria, a friend of mine was very fond of this Land Rover ... he used to call her "White Rhyno". You can guess why.

This one lasted 27 years (20 of these mine with quite a lot of off-road driving). A friend of mine still owns Duster ... it looks like car while Land Rover is simply nothing but truck.

bome ima tu posla, mislim da se ne bi odvažio na tako nešto. Moj domet su davno bile getribe na fićeku i renaultu 4. Danas uglavnom getribe na biciklu. Već odavno maštam o nekom terencu ali me upravo ovakvi događaji odvraćaju od kupovine neke lade nive ili nekog kratkog starijeg lendića.
Svaka čast, samo treba to sve i sastaviti...
U stvari nije to tako komplicirano jedino su dijelovi "kamionski" a ne kao na osobnim vozilima i traju , traju i traju ... uz to dijelovi su nevjerojatno jeftini zajedno sa poštarinom izvana. Ovaj auto je iz 1989. i prvi puta mu je otvoren prednji pogon i nikad pukla nijedna poluosovina do sada (zamor materijala i nožda mala nepažnja). Osobno, imao sam prilike odustati od Landrovera no ni sada mi nije na kraj pameti nešto drugo. Neka ostane u obitelji. Sve možeš napraviti sam i doma. Ovaj stari turbo ide i ide i to u svim uvjetima i pod vodom sve dok je "dihalica" iznad razine vode. Kratkog sam imao 2 godine i izvrtio kotače gotovo 470 000 km i to "radno" po terenima i još uz puno vuče dvoosovinske prikolice sa jednim ili 2 konja (za snimanja). Ovaj bijeli (Defender) puno je pokretniji, brži i dosta jači a ima i puno prostora naročito za spavanje. Dok je kratki na terenu kao koza, dugi je kućica na kotačima ... aluminijska. Sve ono "čelično" unutar konstrukcije što strune nije teško doma popraviti. Ljudi se na taj auto naviknu i gušt ga je voziti ... teško ga je zamijeniti sa bilo kojim drugim vozilom. Izdržljiv je i mene nikada nije ostavio, uvijek sam se vratio iz planina i neizmjerno dugih putovanja ... pa i ove zime kad sam ga izvlačio bez pred. pogona i kočnica nakon što se sinu dogodila nezgoda, deset dana ranije u onom snijegu vozio sam ga doma gotovo bez razlike.
Taj auto nije baš dobro uspoređivati sa ostalim terencima ... spor je ali daleko najudobniji na terenu. Nema elektronike pa modernih "senzorskih" i "softverskih" natezanja i muka nema. Sve je jednostavno. Postoji puno opreme predviđene za njega ovisno o orjentiranosti vlasnika. Čini mi se da bez tih par Landrovera koji su prošli kroz moje ruke tijekom svih tih godina, gotovo ništa od mojih snimaka ne bi uspio realizirati. Šteta da je prestala njegova proizvodnja.

Thanks. Recently I visited the same area but in quite different colors not as it has been when all those troubles were happening. I realized that no one was guilty for that ...in fact I have seen a pile of quite big rocks that no one could notice under that snow and in darkness. So the halfshaft broke for the first time in 20 years. Honestly, to repair it is not hard at all especially if you prepare the set of spares that are needed so you do not have to wait them to be sent from somewhere abroad as we had to. Besides parts are not expensive at all.
Once you fix that the feeling is great ... I left that truck to my son so he can follow my steps through the wild ... sure, on his own way. I believe it will be quite a joy for him as all those adventures were to me. Such the problems with the old truck made adventures even greater.

It was nice to see the dog & bird, I wonder did you have much play in the half-shaft before it broke
There has never been much play in front even despite perhaps poor lubrication found ...and no shaft has ever been broken on that truck since 1989. Long ago I changed whole the rear diff because there has been a king of noise that I even got used through years. But then a friend offered me his spare diff just to change it and get rid of that ... not even any clunk has been noticed then.
That night in the snow ... it must be that sudden hit on a pile of stones caused all that damage as I described ... after the snow chain broke front brake hose.
I checked that spot in the mountain just after the winter.

A very informative video and highlighting a problem with the Land Rover.
My only concern was the mechanic was working in a precarious conditions.
With only a single hydraulic jack (possibly just screwed up only) and cinder type blocks that weren’t actually supporting the axle.
Not a safe way, the only way is with the proper axle stands.
Oh, thanks for your care but the jack is original Land Rover mechanical tool and those blocks are made of concrete tested many times before on even much heavier load. with steel blocks on the top. It is important for the supports to stay firm and well fixed. Thank you for the comment Brian.

I must mention just that I am not professional mechanic nor expert for Land Rovers. I only gained some experience using that specific type of trucks that were easier to buy preowned here, for my own needs. In fact, what my uploads prove, I devoted a big part of my life to nature and animals. Take a time if you please and check the rest of my uploads ... Pavle Balenovic I have an interest in those that restore Land Rovers whatever the age of the vehicle. Teaching young soldiers to drive them many years since for the army (no dual controls). Series 3 and later versions so I became an enthusiast for them, only ever owned an ageing Discovery and trying to keep it up to scratch, but lost in the end insufficient funds. Like yourself I am not a mechanic but use UA-cam videos similar to yours that helps to understand what and how. So videos like yours are vital. I’ll check other of your videos out, nature and wildlife are important to maintain for the future. I’m now working on my XTrail as the passenger door refuses to open.

Oh, yes a female it is. ... one of the few that fate seems to have brought into my hands. I managed to return many of them to the wild to fly freely again. This one has actually returned on a couple of occasions. And I will try to release her again soon.

The diff is bloody heavy. Take care of yourself when struggling under there!
Oh, it surely isn't that heavy that I couldn't be prepared to grab it with both hands and bring it on some prepared soft surface ... thanks anyway.
@@PavleBalenovic getting them out is the easy part. Returning them is a whole different struggle.
My advice is to use a trolley jack.

Thinking about the td4. Is it necessary to dismiunt all these parts to remove the half shaft or even a broken half shaft?
The thing is that... if broken part of the half shaft remained in its seat inside of the diff the only way to take it out is to pull the diff out. Diff can be pulled only after both half shafts are removed out from their seats ... in fact that is not difficult work but it takes some time only , sure if you do not have it you can always ask mechanic to do that ... can't be expensive at all.

you are right about pulling the half shafts out after releasing the drive member but that works on rear axle only while in front there is a bit more complicated because of steering system. If anything is broken you should check what it can be and where exactly first. Then there can be some more damage on other parts joined together and taking that all apart is a good chance to check that completely not to have any worries in the future. Once repaired it will last for another 20 years as it has been the case with my old truck. As I mentioned perhaps it looks complicated but in fact it isn't and the spare parts are easy to purchase over the internet today and are cheap even for us who do not live in those high standard countries.

I have seen your message under another video of mine so here is my reply copied from there:
Honestly , I am not quite sure but I would do some checks first, depending on the shape of all the mechanical details I would be closer to decide. The only concern are rings, indeed that could be sticking though I know the case where everything went OK with simple start not worying about years. If crankshaft is turning easily I believe there need not to be much problems ... I'd check the fuel filter first ... my old one started well with typical knocking because one heater plug failed ... As I didn't prime the system to get rid of the air with that little screw on the pump the start lasted a bit longer until the fuel reached but also oil had enough time to lubricate cylinders and rings enough at least for the first start. I remember there was a bit of blue and black smoke on the beginning ... blue from valve stem seals that dissapeared soon. As soon as the engine warmed up there was no black smoke, too. Bit longer idling warmed up the engine so all the components came in order.
I would suggest to check some other posts on this network, too. I have heard about using acetone (not WD40) to release stuck piston through the injector hole ... but this is all when crankshaft isn't rotating freely when turning its pulley

This was the only case that the truck lost its drive since 20 years we own it.
We bought this vehicle when it was 10 years old with 161.000 miles covered already and continued using it for quite a demanding mountain wilderness offroading, through all seasons and weather circumstances.
So I can only say it was just the accident when that half-shaft broke..

Id say that the vehicle like this white truck made me repair all the things myself alone and on amateur basis.
Best way to fix land rover problems is firstly throw away Land Rover and replace with landcruiser

Perhaps you are right but there is something else in Land Rover that many owners recognize what is not easy to describe. Besides it lasts serving through years and years ... repairs can be done at home even in wilderness and deserts.
That car takes you back home where ever from no matter what kind of fault happens. Faults are always the results of human mistakes while using it.
People over-think it as a tank (with caterpillars) so they use it unconsciously and destroy it. But it was always a machine available that served mostly as a workhorse. It was cheap. We are already feeling the consequences of stopping its production ... now, in exchange for the extremely simple Land Rover, expensive and unimaginably complicated products are offered on the market, Such the products will never save a man's life and make his life easier.
Too bad, but this is the world we live in.
The truck in my video still runs well and surely will another 30 years no matter what anybody thinks. It doesn't need much care, too.
I am sure it will also be always respected and recognized on the road ...proud as any Land Rover.
