  • Little different project than the usual but one that comes up from time to time. We needed to build an angle gate over an installed cattle guard at a property entrance. I’ll share how I did so without an angle finder and, at the end, talk a bit about the cost of the job. Come along with me on-site for a little change of pace.

    I went a little fancier 😁 Had trespassers after a few warnings ignore me so I made an angled 30' gate. Concreted in an I-Beam, Used 2" round with 2 pillow block bearing and Dom tubing I had from building race car cages. The gate opens with one finger and more of a visual but it ended my trespassers.
    I actually trussed the top about 3/4 of the way down to keep it level. 30' is a long gate and it does work well, didn't want to mess with 2 posts and gates since we move wide equipment down the driveway. End post is removable for the gate to close against. Love what you do Austin.

    Grateful for you and Kayla's videos, I started my own land management business, mainly welding and building fence. It has been very hard getting off the ground, and with the rain we are getting here in Oklahoma. Just wanted to say thanks and many blessings to you and Ms Kayla 🙏

    Nice job brother. I might suggest, instead of the gate riding on the weld of the pipe hinge, that you weld a steel collar with a decent thickness for it to ride on, otherwise, overtime that gate will start to wear through the weld and compromise it. Love your work man. God bless.

    What would be valuable content for me is a series of exercises & a then a method or scale to evaluate my performance in terms of a couple of different criteria. That way I could practice basic skills in a more concise and organized manner.

    I made one of these about 20 years ago across a wide entrance at a road intersection to keep people out who were dumping trash. About two weeks later, an intoxicated woman ran the intersection and hit the angle gate. She knocked the cross bar off and hit the rail with the front of the engine hood. Fortunately I made it out of 2-3/8 tubing which flexed and she drove completely under it smashing the front hood, windshield and top of the car. Then she put it in reverse and smashed the trunk and rear windshield!!! The County Sheriff called me at work the following morning to come out and unlock the gate so they could retrieve the car. It was a mess but still drivable. She didn't have a scratch. If I had made it out of 2-7/8 she would have probably decapitated herself. Bartlesville, OK

    • @kanekent2075
      @kanekent2075 2 роки тому +2

      Certificates are worth nothing, to put it simply. Kinda harsh, but true. From a journeyman, any company you apply to will not care about a school certification, a piece of paper saying you can weld isn’t the same as being able to weld, they want to see it. Each place you go to or each job you go to will test you. You can’t show up with your paper and expect them to let you weld. You’ll certify through that company to weld for them. Odds are when you’re an old man you won’t be able to count how many bend tests you’ve taken bro. As for this video, I doubt his customer asked to his welding certification lol. Common misconception in this trade.

    Cattle-guard hint:
    Build you an elevated concrete pad with a sump and open sides.
    When it rains, dirt and debris wash out.
    Extend your pipe fence a good two feet towards the center over the guard each side to prevent the clever ones from "reaching around" earning themselves a Golden Ticket for a one-day tour of Freezer Camp!
    I have actually seen cows do that and escape.

    Do you have a coarse for someone who wants to learn basic welding. I work with wood fencing and I’d like to learn to weld metal frames for my gates. I am not interested in pipeline welding or aluminum or stainless steels or underwater welding just the basic. Like what to buy and how to use it. Is that something you offer? I’d also eventually like to learn to do iron fence work and how to weld on that.

    hi another great videos wait each week for your show.but there are things I can not understand?why do you have so many different types of welding wire, or are these left over from your pipe line days, for the type of welding you are doing you only need 3/32",1/8",5/32" 6010,6011,7018. when are you going to start working like a welder and get rid of that old carpenters hammer and get a chipping hammer?
