  • Is Glacier National Park my favorite national park? Maybe, definitely in the top 5. Going to the Sun Road is a ride that should be on everyones bucket list. The mountains are majestic, the water crystal clear and the air is fresh and crisp. It's truly a wonderful place.
Thanks for coming along for the ride!

Love the idea of putting the date when you did this. For those of us planning similar trips it gives us a relative idea of what the weather is like in that part of the country that particular time of year. Great job Tim. Ride safe

Totally agree! I live in Canada, but not too far away from where this is. We've had snow here, and are no where near 100 degrees anymore. This had to be a while ago. Hahaha.

Kyle: We MT kids all know the weather here is a perpetual variable. I live in Missoula & hike Glacier every year, so I'll give it a shot: Going to The Sun Road gets twenty feet of snow/year. It's never open before mid June, usually at least by July 4th. The best time for hiking/traffic is the last week of August as most kids/tourists are getting back to their lives. It's usually the best time for ripe huckleberries, currents, strawberries, & thimble berries, too. Mosquitos are as mild as they get. I have encountered grizzly bears in the wild 9 different times in MT. Bring protection if you plan to hike/camp, & always prepare & hang your food & aromatic everything's well away from tents. I hope this answers some of your questions. Enjoy Big Sky Country.

i've ridden the going-to-the-sun highway, so much fun. picked up a drunk kanuck hitchhiker at the base, then enjoyed a (cough) spirited ride with some friends... by the time we reached the end & stopped, the kanuck jumped off the bike & literally kissed the ground. also, he was completely sober. good times, thanks for the reminder of a great road. :-)
PS -- good idea to avoid bears; i was run out of my campsite in the bridge nat'l forest by a griz.

In 1990 I did that ride on a fully loaded touring bicycle in the rain, even having to replace a blown rear tyre part way up. On the run down I recall coasting for at least 25 minutes, what a relief. Outstanding run on a motorbike.

I packed up and left, like you I road all day and it was late. I was too tired to continue. Your trips remind me of my adventures... great rides..

Pro tip from a Montanan, pick any forest service road and usually you'll find at least a couple camp sites along it. Bring rope to tie anything scented like food or deodorants at least 15 feet up in the air in a nearby tree. If possible on a branch 3-5 feet out from the trunk so things like bears can't get it. Just throw the rope over the branch, hoist up the bag and tie it off to the trunk. I live in Missoula lots of great camping and scenery in the area. Sad you ended up having to pick a parking lot haha.

I'd love to ride in the USA again. Just returned to the UK from Europe after 6.5 weeks touring. Took my 22kg camping bag, never used it once, ha ha. Just discovered airbnb. Usually always in my tent but this was a very different learning experience in October and November. Keep dodging them grizzlies 😇

reminds me of my college days of top ramen 😁 I had to quit eating those cup of noodles, to much sodium.
Camping at places like that is part of the trip. I wouldn't mind at least you got a casino and gas station right there so its not all bad.

Reminisent of my ride there 5-6 years ago. Camped in the forest near the west entrance a good distance from the bike with all my food so the bears didn't get me. 6:08 Water was freezing in mid-August. Good to see the road construction completed. Still remember the miles of gravel road I rode on to get to the east side. Nowadays I find public camping sites and ask someone if I can sleep next to my bike on my cot.

One of the best national parks for me. The first park I visited by myself. I feel that every national park has that moment that takes your breath away. Had more than one moment at Glacier. I was driving and saw some people pulled over to the side of the road. I was curious why they stopped since I didn't see anything. So I stopped and I will never forget the moment I turned around and saw this massive glacier behind me. Absolutely breathtaking! . The only problem with Glacier is I was too afraid to hike by myself (grizzlies) But I took advantage of ranger led hikes and had another moment when I saw that wild river. Can't wait to go back.

Each visit was for a week, I highly recommended staying for at least 5 days, so that you can really experience, the wonders of Glacier, and Into the Canadian part of Waterton International Park. Glacier is a must do destination, and if you can do it, after school starts, it will be empty.

I have been covering my bike since i left, it does seem worth while for a few reasons. For one peace of mind. It seems to keep people from noticing it, and the things that are left on it that could be easily taken. Plus if anyone tries to remove it i would hear it from my tent, animals included in that. It might be overkill but it helps me relax.

First question I had was - when was this ride? 'Cause I'm betting it wasn't in November. OK July - that sounds right!

Hi, Thanks for another Great Video. What Year is your Bike, and how many Miles have you put on it already? I’m getting a 2006 R1200GS on 05-22-22 and can’t wait to go Riding. I just hope it’s as good of a Bike as it looks. I heard something about Brake Servo Problems on these, so I’m hoping it’s not anything Major or not Common. He said he hasn’t had any problems on this Bike. It’s a Beautiful Bike and very well taken care of. Any input from you would be really appreciated.

Do you find lane splitting being illegal in most states annoying? I live in the UK and would probably stop biking if lane splitting became illegal.

I got in late to a KOA (only late camp option) in Arizona (I think Winslow area) and awakened the owner. He was annoyed. It was pitch black and he told me for $15 I could set up my tent by a hill across a road from the other campers. I thanked him, set up tent, snuggled into my mummy bag and fell soundly asleep. At approximately 2:00am the earth trembled and an ungodly and chest shaking sound awoke me. Never before nor since have I been so terrified. Trapped in my bag I realized I was about to be run over by a freight train. Death was upon me, or so I thought. A 4-5 engine coal train went wizzing by at 70mph feet from my tent. The hill was the railroad track berm. The train was seemingly miles long. After it passed I knew that my annoyed KOA manager had set me up because of my late near midnight arrival. One more similar train passed later that early morning which still scared me but as least I knew the second time I probably wasn’t going to die. I packed up early, around 6:30 am, and as I was pulling out of the KOA I waved at the laughing KOA owner on my way out. He knew I knew he new I knew he had set me up. I laughed with him as I waved goodbye. I think had I stayed he and I would have become good friends. A great prank deserves great respect. 😉

So Grasshopper, did you stack those rocks? If so, I have nothing more to teach you! Good video! I put myself in those "no campsite" situations more times than I'd like to admit. Freecampsites.net is my friend. Almost all casinos welcome anyone that may drop a dime!

So I've been following you all year i just have to ask what are you planing to do through the winter? Im sure someone has asked this already but would be awesome if you could comment. BTW I've done that ride three times and it never gets old. Biggest problem I found was that car drivers are totally oblivious to motorcyclists and they just pull out right in front of you look you right int the eye like its you're fault. Still an awesome ride. Tim love what your doing if i had the balls to do the same I,m sure i would live a lot longer!! One other question if you could do the same thing on any other bike would you go for the beemer again? I have a V Strom 1000 and im not sure it could take the abuse your 1200 could take.

Back on the rails with this, Tim. Good. It must be a bitch editing clips that were shot 4-5-6 months before. I like the stream-of-consciousness patter while you're riding. It adds a dimension, especially to the unplanned decisions of a nomad. And a sense of the optimist v. cautious process.

holy shit !i need to get to gnp. really cool that u put the date on the vid. just curious....how long on average does it take from filming to posting ? and how much time do you spend on editing , roughly ?

    • @FTAAdventures
      @FTAAdventures  4 роки тому

Thanks Paul! It takes anywhere from 10-16 hours to edit and upload everything for a video. Apparently at the moment I'm quite a few months behind but should catch up soon as I slowed down on the filming once I started heading east.
