What I remember, on IU's Love Poem concert, where she found out the news that Go Hara passed away and she had to perform this song, she said, " this is a hard song to sing, moreover this song connects to this kinda situation. Please sing for me if I cannot sing this song entirely." Tho there are lot of interpretations bout this song, I think what she thought about while writing this lyrics, is related to this situation as well.
now that you've reacted to the lyrics, i could finally see the song's connection to the 2014 sewol tragedy 😢 especially the part where you said that it's very "titanic". iu didn't really say that it's for the victims, but the lyrics relates to them. but it could also be about jieun herself. or anyone whose name has been forgotten or wants to be remembered. but still, many people think (especially koreans) that the lyrics fit perfectly with what happened to sewol tragedy.
I know it was sort of dangerous for artists to openly talk about the tragedy at one point so I'm not surprised she didn't say directly but that makes the song extra sad! :(
@@kayepopreactions43 yes. and iu doesn't directly say who her songs are for, or confirm any theory about them. same case for her songs "winter sleep" and "eight" with suga. she lets the listeners to interpret them on their own.
In Korean the words for he/she is one non-gendered word. So the mention in the song of the child should not be gendered, making it more obvious she's singing about herself. IU became and idol at a very early age and appears to lament having lost a normal childhood. This is the theme of My Sea as well. 'Your name was quietly forgotten' - I interpret as 'IU' remembering when she was Ji-eun.
I used to think this way, too... But then she said that this song is the first song she wrote not about herself, but about everyone else... Anyway, even if she is addressing to every other people, I think her past self should been included.
IU said this song was written for all the people that had dreams and ambitions but never achieved it and noone knows their name and are suffering. Thats why for her performance of this song at MAMA she invited a street busker, a background vocalist, etc. This song is not about her.
(1) this song is written by IU and her mentor in lyrics writing : Kim Eana. Kim Eana was her lyricist for her 5-6 first national hits. She is an AMAZING lyricist. IU said she couldnt finish this song alone and seek help from Eana. This show how big, how grand the song is :') (2) I get goosebump when you talk abt "titanic" scene :') Bcs thats one of the "theory" abt Dear Name : IU's words for Sewol's Ferry accident's victim and family ... Please read abt it yourself. (3) that dream = name, forgotten dream = forgotten name is the one interpretation she presented to us in Melon Music Award 2017's Dear Name stage. You should watch it, one of the most beautiful stage of iu's live.
(3)that "child" is the one child you find in many iu's song : from You and I, Secret, Child Searching for a star, and yes My Sea (The Sea of A Child and I). I interpret it as iu's (and our) "inner child", so maybe this like a dialog/ convo between you and your inner-self :') oh, btw her 1st track in her 1st mini album is Ugly Duckling, again... a "child" (4)official IU's interpretation, from her commentary in concert: "I hoped to express a song that would simply be a source of consolation from one person to another person. That's how I wrote the lyrics and picked this song to be (one of) the title tracks." "I honestly hope, that while listening to this song, everyone can become the main character of the song" --> in short ... we all the same, we're just human and we all have names :') (5) lastly, I think all these interpretations are right, and maybe not, in the same time XD IU's lyrics and songs are loved by S.Korean people bcs of their "vagueness"... You can interpret it yourself, according to your situation. Almost all iu's song can be interpreted into multiple interpretations (yes, even Eight).
I hope you will one day react to ‘lullaby’ by iu. As far as I remember, it’s about one of her roles in a kdrama she acted in. I’m not sure about the details of that but it’s about like someone who has already died trying to comfort the living that is struggling due to the said death with a lullaby in their dreams. Its really beautiful.
The song talks about the Seoul ship that sank and killed many students. IU sang it at Mama's party, and behind her was a screen with the names of the victims, and the families of the victims and some surviving students sang with her.
thanks, but you put a bit misinformation here XD its the name of musician/ unnamed busker singer etc, not related to sewol at all ... and its on MMA (melon music award), not MAMA .... and its Sewol, not seoul XD
When I first heard the song, I thought it was abt a breakup or longing/ mourning someone. But the more I listen to it and focus on the lyrics, I have a theory that this song is abt her losing herself then trying to find herself. Her stage name is IU, everyone knows her as IU, I think she’s talking abt how she lost her real identity, which is jieun( her real name). She’s lived as IU for so long that she lost Jieun, her real self. The name she’s calling to is her real name, but that’s the the name/identity she has lost so she can’t find it(can’t find herself). With her name, she lost focus of her dreams and aspirations. I’m guessing that’s the reason the child runs away. But in the end, u can see she remembers that name again( her real name jieun) that she lost and hadn’t heard in so long and that it is why she says she will shout it out multiple times, as to not forget it again. As to not forget and lose her first and real identity( jieun) again.
i would highly highly recommend checking out iu’s through the night! it’s known as a super poetic song and one of iu’s best. it inevitably loses some of that through translation but it’s still really beautiful (mv with eng sub: ua-cam.com/video/BzYnNdJhZQw/v-deo.html) i also really love these two songs from her mini-album pieces, they're lyrically and musically so beautiful (warning get the tissues ready lol): love letter - ua-cam.com/video/DD2bsf0jEq8/v-deo.html winter sleep - ua-cam.com/video/OJ8d__b1YWA/v-deo.html
It's so hard to translate IU's songs because the beauty in them is not only the metaphors, which can sort of be translated into ENglish a little, but the word choice and connotations of the words she uses. And also Korean's sentence structure is sort of opposite to English, and when she sings long phrases obviously the translation should be what she's singing, but really it should be the entire line for it to make sense.
I am really a poet! But unfortunately unless you're a breakout sensation like Rupi Kaur, poetry doesn't pay your bills. All poets supplement their income with something else and do poetry because they love it. Short stories pay slightly better but only if you write a ton and find a good market. Obviously novels are the most lucrative but selling a novel is a challenge all on its own. Plenty of people do make their living writing and it can definitely be done, but it's hard, takes equal measures of skill, hard work, and luck, and I'm not going to lie to you that it's something most people can do as their only source of income. Do it because you love it and have something to say.

I read somewear that the title "Dear Name" can be replaced with your name so. Dear Kaye, Dear (Insert your name). So it is like a message to you.

This is true. this song is dedicated to all the names in the world, especially those names whose forgotten.

This could also be about the sewol ferry tragedy 2014.
Oooh I love that theory! 😥 It could also be about the ferry tragedy. I didn't think about that one, but that's very possible too.
