I can't understand why here Bruce's voice, is such high quality, but his voice seems to show its age in "writing on the wall", as he has a kind of shriek. Perhaps he has to lower the register on his singing to writing on the wall. His vocal quality here is brilliant and really improves a song that was already great, "particularly as an album opener", in the studio
