  • Todd Harris discusses the importance to only prescribing 10 opioid tablets for patients after uncomplicated umbilical and inguinal hernia repairs. Instituting a multi-modal pain management approach for patients after surgery allows patients to use opioids only as a rescue medication and one piece to a larger protocol. The 'No More Than 10' approach should be standard-of-care for surgeons.

Hi Gregg, Thank you for your comments. We're glad you had a good experience and only needed opioid pain pill. Patients like yourself who ice and take Advil and/or Tylenol often don't need many pain pills after surgery. We'll see you in the office for your follow up soon, CAHS

I just found out I have a incisional/ventral and a left inguinal hernia. 3 years ago I had a 2 stage spinal reconstruction surgery for adolescent onset scoliosis. I’m now 56. I’m waiting to see a general surgeon. Is it common to have these 2 hernias at the same time.
Also after the scoliosis surgery I was on a lot of pain medication and was weaned off. When I first came home no one would fill my prescriptions. My insurance company called 30 in network pharmacies and not one would fill my prescription. Fortunately my insurance company filled them and had to overnight ship them to me. This pain medicine scare has affected a lot of people. I still have leftover pain meds but I don’t know what I would have done if my insurance company had not helped me. Thank you.

    Dear Dr.
In Jan 2021 I had a left open inguinal hernia surgery with mesh. For 4 months I never lifted anything heavier than 1.5kg, but afterwards did some small hiking once/month. Unfortunately the hernia reoccurred, and I have pain and discomfort . What should I do? Can I avoid another surgery? Or with mesh in my body I have to do another surgery? Looking forward to your kind words. I am 42, and my hernia can not be seen by eye or by touch. Thanks a lot

Rm, Unfortunately once a hernia forms, it will not repair itself. That being said, hernias that are not causing any symptoms, do not have to be repaired and can be watched. If they eventually get larger or start causing pains, then surgery could be performed. The presence or absence of mesh is not an indicator of whether a surgery has to be performed. Good luck with your situation, CAHS

Hi Dr. Can i ask? what has lower death percentage open surgery and laprascopic? and in your opinion if you we're the one being operated on will you choose open or laprascopic? thank you.

Lucifer, it would be almost impossible to compare death rates for hernia surgery since it happens at such an incredibly low rate. In the 1000's of surgeries that we have performed, there has never been a death. Best, CAHS

Selestine, We would suggest you speak with an OB/Gyn to discuss what can affect pregnancy since we don't deal with those types of situations very frequently. Sorry, CAHS

No more than 10 pain pills post surgery is patently cruel. I wouldn’t let you touch me as a surgeon.

Shannon, Thank you for your comments. Our average patient only takes 3 opioid pills after surgery, with about 50-75% never taking any opioids after surgery. We actually only prescribe 5 opioid tablets for our patients based on this data. And many surgeons are not regularly prescribing any opioids after surgery, and only when they are requested. Best, CAHS
