Conte has to be one of my favourite tacticians because of his pragmatism. He is not using 3-5-2 and 3-4-3 because he does not have strong wingbacks at Napoli to carry those systems but has lots of good players in central areas (Anguissa, Lobotka, McTominay, Lukaku). On paper Inter probably have the strongest squad in Serie A and are the hot favourites but Napoli are certainly title challengers this season.
Conte is without a doubt the best manager in Italy if you're aiming for the league (maybe even in Europe, leaving Pep aside). Besides, Napoli will only play in 2 competitions this season as opposed to Inter and Juventus who will play in 5 (if you add the World Cup at the end) and Milan who will play in 4. They're in a very strong position this season.
His pragmatism was not shown during his tenure at Tottenham though. I think he was being a bit too idealistic at Tottenham, forcing wingback system a bit too much
A great coach is one that adapts his game either due to its squad or due to him/her growing and learning new ways to play! Im so damn impressed Conte is using a back 4 now ...
I'll never forget the Victor Moses transformation under Conte. I think that 3-5-2/3-4-3 he uses, elevates some players and gets the team playing better than the sum of the parts.
One thing is that he did not always use a three in the back formation. He was inspired by Walter Mazzarri's Napoli, who heavily relied on a 3421 formation. It is interesting that Napoli, as a rival, was the start of his popular three in the back and now, as his team, seems to be the end.
Don't think anyone anticipated Conte to move to 4 at the back, but he has. Extremely good coach tactically and always gets the best out of the squad he has. Maybe clubs who want to play 4 at the back can start looking at him now, not just see him as a 3 at the back coach.
Good to see mctomminay being used properly finally. United managers constantly using him as a defensive midfielder, despite being a striker in the youth teams, was pure stupidity.
He wasn't a striker in the youth teams. That's a falsehood that came to be accepted as true. He played most of his youth career in midfield, although not as a defensive 6. He was used occasionally as an emergency striker and even had a season when he mostly played up front but that was due to shortages rather than the coaches viewing him as a forward. Even now, Napoli are using him as an advanced attacking midfielder, rather than as a striker. It's more of a hybrid role but yes, it seems to be his ideal position.
@aidanmagill6769 yeah striker was the wrong word. Forward would have been more apt. I used to watch the reserves etc alot around that time so I'm fully aware of where he played
Lavolpe is a great manager your football knowledge is remarkable. Lavolpe would’ve been a great manager in Italy or Spain. Instead he opted to stay in Mexico. He’s Argentine that has love for Mexico. Great video
Conte didn't always used 352 or 343 formations. His success with Bari was provided by using 424 formation, that he tried to use at Juve, but switched to 352 soon after
I remember his interview pre Juventus and he admired the 4-2-4, it was his favourite formation, and Juve was only a back 3 for him because of the 3 CBs he had why wouldn't you go for it. I'm glad to see him mixing up again.
At Spurs Conte didn't have those explosive wing backs he wanted. His first season was incredible, one of the few times I felt we could go into any game and get a result regardless of opposition.
Conte used a 4-2-4 and 4-3-3 early in his career. He didn't switch to the back 3 until winter in his first season with Juventus. Even then, he played multiple matches with the 4-3-3. He also started life at Chelsea with the 4-3-3. Definitely my favorite manager. I hope he stays at Napoli for a long time. Great content. Thanks for the excellent analysis.
He’s a manager who will adapt to the strengths of his squad. At Chelsea he tried to play 4 at the back then realized his CBs weren’t good enough to just play as a pair. So he used 3 CBs and set Marcos Alonso and Victor Moses free as wingbacks
I love to see a job well done: Conte with his perfect tactics and this channel with its detailed analysis. As an unbiased Serie A follower I'm also looking forward to seeing how Motta's Juve will evolve!
The choice of music at the beginning reminded me of an og tactic UA-camr - Piotr foot. He fell off a cliff and not uploading much or using music like this anymore.
As a Spurs fan I did feel like we had to part ways. A bad fit especially at that time. We needed a long rebuild and Conte more than any other manager cannot be comfortable if he feels that he can't win now. But i still think he's one of the best around and if Napoli can win the title, it's always nice to see someone who's been doubted by some come back and show who they are.. Great work as always on the vid as well.
If he manages to win with Napoli , he will have won the serie A with 3 different clubs. That would be quite something. I think you would have to go back to the 30’s and Arpad Weisz for such a feat. And of course there is the PL title which is the cherry on the cake.
I have also read about relationism alongside his new idea and have noticed some kind of roaming freedom in those central clusters, but it might be Just me, i'd like to hear about it from you. Anyways, if this is the case, Conte already adopted positional game in his style in the past and if he really is doing something similar again he shows great humbleness, intelligence and knowledge of the game doing what is needed the most by his team and by what serie a's tendencies are (man to man approaches, low blocks and high density in the box etc.).
Pretty interested how Baroni's Lazio was able to dismantle this formation yesterday. Flashscore gave: McTominay 5.9, Lobotka 6.7, Anguissa 6.4 Lukaku 6.2.
The best managers are the ones that can always adapt and evolve, something even Mourinho is finally doing at Fenerbachce with more attacking style of play.
The best tacticians are able to bring out the best from their key players. I don’t doubt that Lukaku and McTominay will be brought up to Serie A best 11 in this system. Also props to Conte for showing class and being able to change. It just shows his passion for the game.
I feel that in many modern strategies the full-backs play the crucial role, especially to create numerical superiority situations (and still have a reliable defence). They need to be absolutely complete players, physically strong but still very fast, with good defensive skills but also creative with good vision and passing from the wing. This was very evident in Klopp's LFC, which is why I could never understand when people said he was too good for the full-back position. His (and Robo's) quality was crucial to LFC's success.
Great analysis.. super intresting and well done!! 💙💙💙 This tactic scheme Mr.Conte is actually doing (4222), in Italy natives call it "Pall' Ncap" this is synonymous of dominance, strenght and leadership.. translated mens "bollocks on your head"
This is basically the classic 4-4-2 formation. where LMF and RMF were called instead of winger. But with more pragmatic and versatile middle half with 2 DMF and 2 CB rotated in a diamond shape with any of the 4 players acted as a libero.
Buon pomeriggio.
Looks like the 3-4-2-1 that Poch played in the Conte winning EPL season...with Dier dropping in to allow Vertonghen and Aldeweireld spread out, in turn allowing Rose and Walker push up....on paper, it was a 4-2-3-1
McTominay gives him a comfortable 4222 and he can dynamically shift to midfield too. Kvaratskhelia is also great at ball carrying to front. So much dynamic for them.
The reason why he switched to 4-back tactic was not lukaku and kvara being more comfortable but the lack of quality wingers in the squad. When he joined Napoli, it was clear that the team would change from the long time practiced 433 into 3421, but the transfer session was though and weird, especially for the Osimhen situation, conte understood it and decided to switch back, but in his own way
Conte hasn't always played 3 atb. At Siena he played a 424 and he carries that system into Juve. He then adapted to a 352 in Turin to make the most of his personnel. This change ruined Milos Krasic and turned him into an afterthought when he was one of Juve's best players in the old system. Conte adapting tactics to suit the team is what he does so well. At Chelsea he stuck with the 4231 until a vad game against Liverpool and thats when he switched to the 3421, and it looks like hes made the change nuch quicker this season. 🙂
This totally explains why Conte was so keen to get Gilmour as Brighton’s vertical transitions were similar under RDZ. After last night’s performance in the San Siro, the Napoli fans are also noticing his ability here. Anguisa is excellent, but imagine Gilmour and Lobotka together once they get fit and familiar with one another? Insane
Great in depth analysis. Mctominay was used poorly at Man Utd. Everyone knew he was a box crasher and shouldn’t be involved in the 1st phase of play and rather further up the pitch but Ten Hag was clueless.
