I really get tired of people saying that everything is underrated. This guy is underrated, this band is underrated. But in this case I would agree. Listening to the LA market during the '70s I heard just about everything. Somehow this band slipped through. No problem for Zappa, Yes, Tull, Flock, Wishbone Ash, Tubes, Charlie Musslewhite, and many more. Didn't hear much Gentle Giant.
Very happy about this feature. The more I hear from Gentle Giant, the more I like them - it's very puzzling music at times, very technical, but also quirky.
The opening track The Advent of Panurge is a must! The Runaway from their next album In a Glass House is also superb! Three Friends is one of the best concept albums ever. Many great moments to come with GG.
In a interview, Zappa was asked, what other rock bands do you listen to. He replied, Queen and Gentle Giant. Also, the term "underrated" is over used way too much. However, out of all of the bands, this term does apply. Living in Santa Barbara in the early '70s I listened to the L.A. market. I've seen Hendrix, Trini Lopez, Beach Boys, Zappa 30+ times, Tull, Yes and many more. But I seldom heard any GG in the '70s. Their popularity now is larger than ever.
I've loved this band from beginning, back in the 70s. This must be a Steve Wilson remix, it sounds so fresh. I have an old cd, it sounds muddled compared to what I just heard. Now I gotta spend more money getting a cleaner mix! But it'll be worth it...I just got The Power & the Glory remix and it's amazing!
I was fortunate to have seen them three times and absolutely nothing could compare. The swift changing of instruments in the middle of songs was breathtaking and amazing. Each member was a multi-instrumentalist and they used that like no other band ever has. There are videos of them playing live, but none can show the true nature of how they performed, because it was a three ring circus and the videos only can focus on parts at a time. Understanding that music is applied mathematics, Gentle Giant is advanced calculus ... complex and beautiful when you understand what they are doing. They are each at genius level when it comes to beats per measure.
In the early 1970s I had a friend that owned a used record store/head shop. On Sundays he had a three hour prog rock show called "Stone Trek" (his last name was Stone). He played a lot of Gentle Giant and many other prog rock greats. I was in the radio studio the first night he had the show. Subscribing to your channel cuz it reminded me of that.
Greg Stone? Perhaps I got the first name wrong, but it seems right. I certainly forgot the call letters of the station, but it was the one I listened to most often. KLOS?
Well thats a bold choice for a first time Gentle Hint Reaction. LOL! GG were multi-leveled talent in a multi-varied way. This is one side but gives you a big slice of their crazy incredible world. I saw them in the 70s twice in small venues. Sadly though brilliantly creative and unique Prog wasn't appreciated enough and even many fans of the genre weren't aware of them but most preferred more commercial mainstream music esp. Americans.
The live version is incredible and you can see them playing all the instruments and do the vocals parts without missing! The acoustic part everything. Gentle Giant is the perfect concept of progressive rock. Also, if you hear Haken you can find in their music a lot influence from GG.
Worth checking out LIVE PLAYING THE FOOL - they were at their best live IMHO. If you like this band check out contemporary band BIG BIG TRAIN I recommend EAST COAST RACER or THE TRANSIT OF VENUS ACROSS THE SUN. Great compositions prog meets folky influences and a brass band with ex XTC guitarist DAVE GREGORY GREG SPAWTON NICK D’VIGILO from SPOCKS Beard DAVID LONGDON (Sounds like Peter Gabriel) RACHEL HALL - strong influences of early Genesis. Can I also suggest FREEHAND also a Gentle Giant masterpiece remastered by Stephen Wilson
I tried doing a live stream doing a full record and youtube shut it down and blocked it entirely even to rebroadcast later. So no, not an option sadly.
Doug is very popular. What do you like about his videos? and be brutal as you wish if you compare his videos and mine. I don't take anything personal, just want to improve the channel.
@@deanwolfechannel Heay Dean, Let me start by apologizing - I was drunkenly watching "Daily Doug" videos, came across yours, and assumed you were a poseur/imitation of the man. I have watched your promo reel and some of your reaction videos with lucid eyes, and am duly impressed. You are a badass musician, and I look forward to learning from more of your reactions.

The greatest most criminally underated band ever
I look forward to digging in to their catalog

I reacted to panurge already actually, thanks for your comment
WOW! You're in for a trip with these guys!!! 😍

I also only started listening to GG recently (after decades of Oldfield, Yes, Genesis, Rush etc). Very unique....and enjoyable

Ah yes, you're one of the old guard and protectors of progressive rock!
Yes Steven remixed this along with several other GG albums
Sometimes they're avantgarde, sometimes they're just rocking. I love the live version of Glass House with a drop like in dubstep
Gentle Giant are fantastic. One of my favorites of the 70s.

And they do most of that incredible stuff live!
I remember hanging with coworkers after our shift, and while playing GG on my car stereo, they said "What the hell is this". That was 1977.
Oh, yeah.. predates Bohemian Rhapsody by three years btw, and UNLIKE QUEEN, they did it live without prerecorded vocals
Also, each singer doing a different melody, very complex.

Gentle Giant... Stellar band... Queen? They were doing vocal harmonies like this while Queen were tuning up!
😄

What a first song to pick from Gentle Giant, its one of their most odd! Its good, really grows on you I think, but hah, what a first impression!
Awesome!!
The Smith jury is still out on this. Will need to hear more first. 😁
It’s like a post-modern madrigal.
All man in each man!! This is advaita ♻️
I recommend the album acquiring the taste
Woo hoo!!!! Egg,Nektar,Asia Minor,Etc etc
You really have to listen to the entire album to get their balanced sound. Lots of variety.
"This is wild..."

Daily DOug, GG put out UNBELIEVABLE live gigs, only equal to those of.... Frank Zappa!
Check out this song live, it’s heavier and better.
Wish we could listen along with the actual record you purchased. And we can! Do you think? Maybe next time?
I tried doing a live stream doing a full record and youtube shut it down and blocked it entirely even to rebroadcast later. So no, not an option sadly.
One of their strangest songs.
Try to react to octopus excerpts they did live
I hope Gong is next.
Great idea! More 70s prog I am ignorant of. Name a good intro track

@@calvinwboaz7085 That's my FAVOURITE. Fantastic song.
@@justsomejusstsome8994 Fingers crossed. Very few on YT react to Gong.
Love this band, not one of my favorite songs by them though to be honest.
Van Der Graaf Generator.
Yes its planned
it's up! first one too.
