@@ProjectFarm The one additional test I would have liked would be which one keeps your hands the cleanest when cleaning up a moderate spill. Maybe wipe up a spill of half as much as the towel can absorb and see how much transfer is on the glove.
The sontara towels are great. I was an automotive painter for 20 years and loved the sontara towels. I was very picky and a towel snob. After I masked off a car, I would clean my panels with grease and wax remover. Most towels leave to much lint behind. The sontara’s were the only ones that didn’t lint. And when painting, you need the cleanest, dust and lint free environment possible. Little towel lint fibers left behind are detrimental to a nice smooth paint finish.
It makes sense. If you're using them in the aerospace industry, you don't want that lint getting into multi-million dollar machinery/engines/equipment.

I purchased the WypAll box of towels based on your testing. They arrived yesterday. I am blown away by their strength and absorption. I used Scott blue towels for decades and now they are history in my house. I love finding products that work. Thank you.
I’m highly convinced that this channel is the only channel that every kind of man can go too. Whether they want the very best or the best bang for the buck. Everything you need is here. You sir have helped a ton of people out and it’s well appreciated👍🏼

I suggested doing the disposable shop towels and thought maybe it was a dumb idea. Now I am glad I suggested it and of course PROJECT FARM did a great job as usual. If you have any ideas don't be afraid to suggest them.
I'm an aircraft mechanic and we use Sontara wipes. Their main purpose is to clean surfaces before applying sealants/paint so it's really important they don't leave behind fibers. If we have to clean up any kind of spill from oil, grease or hydraulic fluid we use PIG mats, which are hydrophobic and only collect the hazardous chemicals
Not going to lie, you're one of my biggest father figures. I know it sound kind of silly, but you teach me all the things my father never could. ProjectFarm really is the the best I’ve watched since the beginning and have watched the channel evolve and grow! This channel will be huge as time goes on!
@@jonathantaylor6926 Wrangler Star definitely shares tons of wisdom in his videos, I've learned more about axes than will probably ever serve me, but all the tips and techniques he uses when doing stuff has taught and saved me time and money, very much like Project Farm!
I've been using the Great Value brand for a very long time. For the money, it's a good paper towel. I always wanted to know which paper towel is best for low lint use. Thanks for another great testing video!
Likewise low lint is important to me. I usually struggle with lint when cleaning gasket surfaces and find myself wiping several times to remove the lint from the last wipe. It probably doesn't matter but when you want something to last 100,000 or more then you don't want it take chances!
Probably the most consistent channel on YT. I chucked a little seeing the various testing methods just for paper towels, but being thorough is one of Project Farm's claim to fame. Gotta love it!
Yeah that made me sad. Maybe he filmed that a year ago and it was an accident and he finally found a use for the footage. I like to think that's what happened.
@@hertzer2000 Maybe they have been treated with fabric softener at the factory to make them feel fluffier? The test would be if they absorb better after washing.
I have been using the 16 inch MATCC brand microfiber cleaning cloths (from Amazon) for a while now. They are thick microfiber on one side and thin on the other. The MATCC microfiber cloths work great for automotive detailing, especially for glass. Just make sure you wash them (without fabric softener) before using them, as with all microfiber cloths. That way they don't smear or shed during use.
Huge fan of the channel. Love the non-sponsored, purely data based reviews of products in a variety of common uses. Appreciate your short summary of findings at the end where you typically cover most economical, best, and your choice. Keep up the awesome content!
Man, corporate boards must live in fear of your videos coming out! The rest of us love your amazing content, Todd. Thanks so much for all your hard work!
I love the Sontara wipes. We use them in our maintenance back-shops in the Air Force. Thank you Project Farm for the amazing quality and dedication you put in your videos!
Don’t think I’ve ever seen you get as excited as you did by the shop towel staying together for a min as a head gasket. Love it. And i was just saying the other day how impressive it was that respond to comments still even though you get thousands… “Very Impressive!!”
“The quicker picker upper” “We’re gonna test that” Never knew that could have been so funny. I’ll never look at another roll of Bounty the same way again.
I’m willing to bet the bounty marketing team never thought they’d have to worry about their quicker picker upper claim to get the project farm “we’re going to test that” treatment! Haha
I think Kimberly Clark actually is Scott. It really likely just comes down to the fact that the white box Kimberly Clark ones are meant for pretty brutal industrial use whereas the blue Scott towels can pretty much be bought at Walmart by any Tom Dick and Harry. I've honestly used them all in my years, but in my house we use the Bounty towels because they don't scratch and they are quick spill cleaners. We do have some Scott blue towels in our garage just for drying our hands basically. I honestly just use the run down microfiber rags for just about everything in my garage though. Worst case scenario they get too destroyed to be worth washing and I throw them out. But they were junk at that point anyway.
Scott Pro shop towels are my favorites. The extra texture makes a big difference over standard "flat" shop towels. But I still have a place in my heart for the old red cloth shop towels. As far back as I can remember, my late grandpa always had one of these in his back pocket when he was working.
I can vouch for Brawny for sure. As a kid I was Chief parts cleaner when my dad rebuilt his 350 Chevy engine. I cleaned parts with gasoline all day with 1 paper towel. My dad is gone now. sure wish I could go back to the 80s and clean parts for him again. Good times.
Good idea! Sawdust too, and diapers. We called them diapers in the air force, i think they're called pig pads? They absorb petroleum products, not water.
I don’t know the answer to that question, but my wife’s cat uses oil-dri in her litter box. I can buy a 30lb bag for $6 at the local heavy duty parts house. I don’t even like cats, so there is no way I am paying the mark up on kitty litter.
Hands down my favorite product review channel on youtube. Who else would test something as random as paper towels this throughly and somehow make it genuinely interesting to watch!
My shop uses Wypal shop towels and I have never once had to toss one because of wear, and any tears that have happened were due to rare and particularly focused pressure on a sharp snag. They aren’t the most absorbent but they last long enough to actually get fully soiled before tossing them into the waste bin.
“The quicker picker upper”……. Thank you….thank you so much for reading that out! Made my day. Loved this one…..gonna switch out my shop towels for wypall and keep some bounty around for spills! Love this channel.
I dont know how to send a message for a suggestion so im hoping you will read my suggestion. Here in the UK there is this weed called Mares Tail / Horse Tail. I am wondering if you could do a test to see which methods totally gets rid if them. Such as wd40, weed killers and home made pestisde. It would be really helpful.
For household use, I have bought Bounty Towels since they were introduced in the 1960's. I buy them for their quick absorption. They still do a great job in the kitchen. Nice video! Thanks!
Believe it or not, Walmart “Great Value” brand powdered dishwasher detergent performs better than more expensive brands. The pods suck. Especially the liquid pack ones. The pack never completely dissolves and gums up the dispenser lid.
I wonder if there is a dishwasher detergent that will clean off cooked eggs, from cooking scrambled eggs in a bowl in the microwave. I have yet to find a detergent that can do it.
@@mercoid yeah, i use the same after try several other options. The pods sucks, too much marketing wank. However i would love to see a proper PF review.
Your reviews are more valuable than Consumer Reports! I'm sure you have this on your idea list already, but a review on battery leaf blowers (or gas) would be really interesting.
From what I understand in the past consumer reports reviews can be questionable as reported some of the reviewers went on to go to work for the some of the companies they reviewed products of.
@@marcusbrown188 Not true. I have over 60 years' experience with Consumer Reports, and have at least 30 years of issues here. They are not what they once were, but they still do a decent job, especially on autos, large appliances, and other very costly items not practical for Project Farm to test. Consumer Reports does NOT accept advertising, unlike their competitors in print, and they are a tax-exempt organization. You cannot be impartial when accepting ads. Project farm tests items CR has not tested, at least in recent years. But at one time, CR did test the type items tested by Project Farm now. Both are necessary. Project farm does a very nice job on the items he tests.
I prefer the Costco "short sheet", white paper towels, as well as the Scot, blue shop towels, in the garage. I think the Scot blues are just extremely versatile, all around. As other commenters have said, there is a trade off between toighness, and absorbency. The Scot blues seem to have a perfect, all around balance when it comes to being lint free, strong enough to not fall apart while detailing wheels on a car, for example. And the one thing I do love about them, is that they are pretty damn soft. And they tend not to easily scratch plastics, clearcoats, etc. Soft enough that I tape two of them down (still connected together), on a flat wooden TV tray, when I search coin rolls, for high MS grade coins. These towels don't scratch the delicate fields in the coins, and they are thick enough that the coins stay put, and dont slide around. Great video! Thanks PJ!
I use Scott Blue shop towels to clean around the house. No lint, and they hold up better than paper towels, and often I only need to use two sheets to clean what I want.
This is one of those rare times I would have loved to see a brand involved that wasn't. Viva paper towels are absolutely amazing and I would bet they would have easily been the best paper towel brand, I use them as dish washing towels and I throw them out before they break down. I have the great value strong brand and it doesn't even touch the Viva in anything we use them for.
I know I don’t have much shop experience with these towels, but I’ve been working in kitchens for years and Wypall is the only brand I’ve ever seen and obviously for a good reason. They are more often then not better than a cloth at picking up spills. I’ve had to clean up oil spills in kitchens that are huge (50+ Litres) and with Wypall it doesn’t take a lot that’s for sure. Great video, love your content!
Excellent products analysis & comparison! You really hit the most important factors in this video: absorbability, durability, strength, & lint residue! Keep up the good work!
I know it's an older video, but I've been using both Wypall and Bounty both in the shop, home, and race track for years. Both are definitely worth the money!
An important point on the Scott blue shop towels. I had bought some Scott shop towels in the automotive section at my local Meijer store. They were super tough and great. A couple weeks later I went to Autozone and bought 6 quarts of oil to change in my 4Runner and they were offering 2 rolls of blue Scott shop towels for $2. I really like the ones I had purchased before and thought 2 rolls for 2 bucks was a bargain. Except when I opened them, they weren't the same Scott shop towel. The blue towels I had bought at Meijer were a quilted towel that was fantastic and super tough. The bargain from Autozone was a much cheaper version that wasn't quilted and literally fell apart when it used them to clean something with acetone. I think that cheaper, disappointing Scott shop towel is the blue shop towel that was part of his test here. Scott shop towels more than pass the test, but look at them carefully. The blue quilted Scott towels are the good ones.
Thanks again Tod, this one is a great video and one I can use every day! IDEA: please test spray paints. I almost always am dissipointed with the can clogging, or splattering on the final coat, or... you name it. There has to be one or two reliable brands out there. I seemingly have tried them all. Thanks so much for the most useful videos on You Tube!
Super helpful video. Thank you! Jan 2023 per sheet prices on amzn: Wypall (11 "x 16.8") Blue $0.18, White $0.24 Sontara (12" x 12") EC/Blue $0.17, Aerospace/White $0.18 Wypall prices are for 160sht box. Sontara is for 1000sht case.
In the next one, please try wypall x90s and wypall “oil grease and ink”. Actually, on second though, it would be nice to see an all wypall test, through all of their different grades. I have a roll of x90 in the shop, and some of them have been in the mineral spirits solvent tank for over a year without breaking down. Also, it would be nice to see a comparison of oil absorb any mats with the different ratings and brands. Pig vs all the other knock offs.
We use wypall at my shop and they are great. Would love to see a full product line review of absorbing mats/snakes as well, we have some that will lay in water and absorb oil and not the water it’s crazy.
Dude, the gasket portion was amazing. I am amazed at the amount of detail you put into these. I use the Blue Scott at home. I plan to change that later. Thank you so much.
Ooh yes sometimes I give up and use dish soap to cut through it(oil, grease, etc) but it's terrible to my skin, especially when it's winter and everything is super dry and it's below freezing outside.
I truly never thought I would be utterly stunned seeing someone pull apart paper towels. But the Wypall difference actually made me go, "woah really?" I truly appreciate all the videos you make. Even seeing all your testing appartus and the difference in products in the same field is amazing to me. Thank you for doing this.
WypAlls have been amazing when provided by companies. Can't bring myself to spend that much money for disposable towels, but they're shockingly great. Edit: Wow, had no idea they were only middle-of-the-pack on price!
Always love your videos. I just wish you'd included Viva towels. Priced like a paper towel but with a thicker feel, more like a shop towel, I'm wondering if they wouldn't do well in the price/performance ratio.
I was going to post the same thing. I highly recommend Viva "Signature Cloth" paper towels. They are extremely absorbent, very low shed, and durable enough that you can ACTUALLY wring them out and reuse multiple times. The rolls are tiny for what they cost, but one tiny sheet dries as well as two name brand full sized sheets and is about as durable as four. Avoid the "multi-surface" ones since they're basically a better version of Bounty, unless you want regular style paper towels.
I always laugh at those commercials with the most comically, over dramatic "accidents". Like, yeah, the accidents happen I'm sure but I'm not going to revert to a 10th grade theatrical version of myself because of it. It's usually just a mumbled curse word at best...
I just use old cloth towel's, instead of trowing them out. They get a second purpose and i save money. I wash them in a old used washing machine i found on the roadside, it just needed a new plug.
I used a Wypall X70 with Super Clean to remove an oil spill on a concrete porch. Worked very well, no shreds left behind. (Always wear gloves.). It is a red towel, the Super Clean turns purple when reacting with the oil, so you end up with purple soiled towels.
i only care about the shedding! so this can come in handy! but yeah the strength or absorbtion, who cares, they are paper towels! you can just grab a few more lol but the shedding can be a big issue on certain surfaces
Good one! I use Murphy’s a lot. For wood, of course, but it’s also great for spot cleaning cat vomit from quality wool rugs. The vegetable oil base is gentle on wool.
Great video. I agree with your assessment. I have used Wypall for years and they are not the cheapest but they are the best in my opinion. Thanks again for taking the time to make this video!
For session #2, try Sam's Club (Member's Mark), Costco (Kirkland) against Griot's Garage brand ;-) I also want to see how abrasive all these various brands are on a glass windshield.
Thank you for taking the painstaking time to scientifically utilize information. My family definitely appreciates this information! In today's economy we need the best value for our own practical uses!
Wd-40 carby cleaner is good. The nulon brand also decent A cheapish brand from "supercheap auto" in australia also ok. Break part cleaner not sure. If you want a starter fluid nulons "start ya basterd" is great.
@@southaussiegarbo2054 The problem here is that although the US and Australia have many of the same chemical brands, the down-under chemicals are often the strong original composition, while the American brands have been neutered, just like our politicians.
@@howardhiggins9641 lol very true we like the stronger 💩 bc it works better. And yeah tbh right now id rather trump then scott morrison(our federal leader) 😂
Using bpc could skew the results, as towels made with binder will probably lose more strength then hydroentangled towels. Also, most bpc in itself is very volatile, and will evaporate quickly, requiring little to no cleanup.
I've been using the toolbox brand from harbor freight for a couple years and they work well. I really like the larger rolls they sell for $11 and they sell a dispenser that holds the big rolls so you can refill it easily and not throw away the container every time. As seen here they aren't the best but the price is good and I use enough that it's a good option for the money
Sontara towels are exceptional. I found out about them when I saw the contractor using them on the depot repair line (defense contractor). The cost is on the high side, a box of 100 of the 9165A's is around $25. A lot more than a roll of regular paper towels or shop towels. I don't use them for normal use. They're great when working on prepping paint or staining. Also, electronics and gluing are other great uses. I had a feeling the Sontara's would be the best, however there is a cost for quality. Thanks for another excellent video!
Could you have a table on screen that filled with the results as you showed them, it would be cool to keep track of the results as they came in, love the channel!
Loved the video! Would you consider testing anti-freeze/coolant? Do the fancy modern technology coolants actually perform any better than the old stuff we've been using for generations? Keep up the good work!
Bounty was 1st for absorbency and 2nd for absorbency speed compared to a paper towel costing nearly 4 times as much. I think it did alright considering.
Pretty impressive the ways you come up to test these things. You have the brain of a rocket scientist! Most of us DIYers are soo fortunate to have access to your videos and mind... Thanks a MIL!
Thanks, awesome video review! I use a lot of Costco brand paper towels in my home shop mostly for wiping parts, hands and spills. They are really cheap with huge rolls ( 12 = 220) Haha. I gave up trying to figure out the best value/cost in the store they are just smarter at marketing then my math skills can handle with all the different size sheets ect. I also use a lot of old cut up tee shirts for the rough jobs and they are practically free and therapeutic to cut up. They all leave a lot of lint but who cares I'm not building rockets.
9:51 -- Such a fascinating test. It appears that the household towels are prioritizing adsorption at the cost of durability, and the commercial towels are prioritizing durability over adsorption. The outlier and worst brand by far is Brawney: a very expensive towel which is neither absorbent nor durable. (Maybe Brawney should have spent less time deciding on whether their lumberjack has a beard or not and more time on making quality towels 😂)

Me, too, because you can get them in a big, 10-roll multi-pack from Costco. I've got my eye on those Wypalls, though...
They used to be a lot better, but the past few years the quality has just plummeted

My dad is gone now. sure wish I could go back to the 80s and clean parts for him again. Good times.

Seeing you spill that oil got me thinking; which is better, Oil-Dri, or kitty litter?
Great video idea!
Good idea! Sawdust too, and diapers. We called them diapers in the air force, i think they're called pig pads? They absorb petroleum products, not water.
On the farm I've found wheat dust from the combine works as a pretty good absorber as well.
I don’t know the answer to that question, but my wife’s cat uses oil-dri in her litter box. I can buy a 30lb bag for $6 at the local heavy duty parts house. I don’t even like cats, so there is no way I am paying the mark up on kitty litter.

CR just recommends whatever is expensive rather than what is good enough for what it is
From what I understand in the past consumer reports reviews can be questionable as reported some of the reviewers went on to go to work for the some of the companies they reviewed products of.
Very true, Project Farm uses well thought out, and much better testing than consumer reports
Thanks PJ!
Thanks! Thanks for the feedback.

Thanks for the constructive feedback.

Just curious why did you use brake parts cleaner instead of water to test the wet rip strength?
I’d say bc most ppl likely will use that more in a shop setting than water
Using bpc could skew the results, as towels made with binder will probably lose more strength then hydroentangled towels.
Also, most bpc in itself is very volatile, and will evaporate quickly, requiring little to no cleanup.

Sontara towels are exceptional. I found out about them when I saw the contractor using them on the depot repair line (defense contractor). The cost is on the high side, a box of 100 of the 9165A's is around $25. A lot more than a roll of regular paper towels or shop towels.

The outlier and worst brand by far is Brawney: a very expensive towel which is neither absorbent nor durable. (Maybe Brawney should have spent less time deciding on whether their lumberjack has a beard or not and more time on making quality towels 😂)
