And then they ended up in the Showcase together, and when he came up after Donna won he hugged both of them.
It's also possible that they met and got acquainted with each other while waiting in line to get in. I've attended tapings to the show about five times, and it's a long process. You have to wait and wait in line for hours outside the studio before the show starts (fortunately, they have benches) and it gets kind of boring so you really get to know the people next to you. You don't just arrive and walk in the studio. You have to fill out forms, and get a brief interview to see if you'll be an energetic or funny contestant.
There are a number of shows from the seventies where two people who came to the show together end up being called as contestants. This definitely looks like one of them.
I wish Cherri had made it up there though. It probably felt like a disappointment for her to accidentally go up there and think that she was going to play only to never play at all.

If you're there for the entire show (when you're one of "the first four contestants"), and don't make it out of the Row, you basically ended up with the Cherri or Vanna White treatment.

The modes are all beautiful--Janice and Anitra as the original two and Dian joining when the show expanded to an hour.. It's interesting how Bob takes the time to explain the big wheel so carefully, since it was only a few weeks old (and the studio audience would never have seen it).
