  • In this quick video, Taryl goes over how to troubleshoot that you may have a blown head gasket. Is yours making this sound? How about blowing black oil out of the muffler? You might think it needs rings when really it's a blown head gasket. Be sure to check out Taryl's more in-depth head gasket video for a full walk through on the subject. Even tho I thought my 22hp intek vtwin Briggs was running like a champ, this year getting it ready for spring found out it needed some help. The smoke from the diptube sure helped decide on doing the head gaskets after I had already done valve clearence adjustments a bit earlier. Thank you for your awesome videos. I’m now 1/3 into a tear down and changing out most gaskets including sump gasket(bought the whole gasket set due to oil build up everywhere) and with be servicing and lapping the valves due to a lot of build up on the valve side of the heads. With one exhaust valve not sealing properly and spinning with your thumb trick. Still deciding on if I want to crack open the carb for cleaning. It always ran fine.
    Keep up the outstanding work.

      Replace left head gasket on my Kohler 24hp at 110 hours. Thought it was just a fluke, so I only replaced the one side. At 130 hours the right gasket blew. Junk! Why would you make a head gasket without a flame ring around the cylinder hole!

    externally blown: black smoke out of muffler (burned oil goes past head gasket during exhaust cycle)...oil consumption...oil gets very black. Spark plugs also gets very black. loss of crank case pressure and vacuum. weak fuel pressure often misdiagnosed a fuel delivery or carb problem.
    internally blown: during ignition cycle, combusted gasses blow past gaskets directly into crank case, causing over pressure and oil into fuel pump...usually develops a small oil consumption. surging and engine performance problems...if not fixed will lead to overheat due to oil very hot and loss of viscosity, premature ring and cylinder and piston and cylinder bore wear. Sparks plugs will also be very black and sooty from improper and incomplete combustion.
    a compression test AND leakdown test will diagnose this problem.

    Remove the valve covers and start the engine. If it’s blown, you’ll see the oil being blown out by the crankcase over pressure. It’s also been my experience that it will fill the air filter housing with oil in the worst cases, sometimes to the point that engine will choke out and die. If your air filter is covered in oil, you likely have a blown head gasket…….

    • @gamerX-wk7ct
      @gamerX-wk7ct Рік тому

      ya but what your doing doesn't always point to the head gaskets . for example I had one that had a fine crack in the top of the piston and it would run fine until it got hot then it would start smoking and fill the air filter with oil . alot of times by looking at the mower and how it has been taking care of can help with finding problems to .

    I realise that almost all the engines being dealt with on this channel are air cooled, but maybe a qualifier should be added that there are additional, different, symptoms, for a failure in a water cooled engine, such as white exhaust smoke, water in the oil, oil quantity increasing or turning grey, bubbles in the radiator, loss of compression, etc. . .

    I have an old jonsered with a briggs 14 horse. Pretty sure its got a bad head gasket. The oil pretty much instantly turns black after an oil change also likes to back fire on start up but that may be another issue. How bad is it to run it with a blown head gasket? I dont use it anymore but I must have used it for 10 years or more like that.

    I believe you.
    There's been some small engine problems I've heard but the people didn't want to find the cause.
    This gives a go-to and many cylinder heads are easy access and the gaskets aren't expensive.
    You don't see a lot of failure of head gaskets.
    So, is it overheating?
    Or the quality of the gasket?
    Or expansion/contraction loosens them up?

    • @baileyhatfield4273
      @baileyhatfield4273 Рік тому

      Age, easily overheated, ect. All the crap mice like to bury in the air cooled engine covers clogs them up.

    • @dannylinc6247
      @dannylinc6247 Рік тому

      @@baileyhatfield4273 the first time I get asked to check an engine for hard starting, or no start, or it's been out uncovered in the rain, I have a list.
      It includes head bolt check.
      The exhaust side bolts are what's taking the turn on the bolts.
      The top comes off, the rope pulley gets lube, the ignition gets wire brushed and regapoed to spec, just like the sp. Plug.
      I think the bigger engines don't receive this maintenance.
      And that's causing eventual gasket leaks.
      I was just wondering what this ones bulletins say or what they find on this versus similar engines of other makes.
      People who can still mow, keep mowing, and things add up to failure eventually.
      Fluffy sure speeds up the overheat, you're right.
