"The wisdom of St. Thomas, We say; for if anything is taken up with too great subtlety by the Scholastic doctors, or too carelessly stated-if there be anything that ill agrees with the discoveries of a later age, or, in a word, improbable in whatever way-it does not enter Our mind to propose that for imitation to Our age." -Aeterni Patris 31 This the quote mentioned by Fr. Kappes in this presentation. Thank you Dr. DeClue.
So wonderful to see Fr Kappes well! He was the associate pastor at my parents parish when I was in my early high school years. Haven’t seen him in over 15 years!
Garrigou-Lagrange found John Paul II's theses to be rather infuriatingly at odds with Thomism. So, actually, this calls into question the Thomistic character of the Pope's thinking.
The problem with Richard Cross is that he filters both Aquinas and Scotus through the lens of analytical philosophy. Effrem Bettoni is a far better introduction, particularly inasmuch as he dispels the myths concerning the doctrine of Scotus.
Tomistic thought is the antithesis of the Modernist thought. It is the instrument of the intelligence to reach the objective truth. It is the antagonist of blurring, subjectivism and confusion.
It just seems off the fact that many byzantines are scotists just because it is the closest theological school to palamism so they technically can support certain elements of it without being heretics
@@bradycutler8192 Come again? Byzantines can be anything they like. All that's needed is religion and freedom, not these millions of rules and regulations.
When you study his life you will see that he quickly realized that the nazis were no good. Granted he didnt fight against it like some others but to call him a nazi is just a wrong claim and cannot be stated like that - especially if you look into his philosophy.
@@OrdinemIntegro Well he did remain in the Nazi party until the end of WWII. So perhaps he didn't fully agree with all the parts of the ideology, but he was still a passive sympathizer.

No one is better than the best there is, Rev. Dr. Kappes!
Amen Father Kappes is a treasure of the Church
God bless you William,
No one is better with what you do then you to brother, God bless you
Will watch later. As a Scotist myself, I am very excited for this.
More of this guy. I'd like to listen to him talk about his Mark of Ephesus defense.
It's good, Scotists can treasure this rarity. In the name of God and the Blessed Virgin, amen!
This conversation was superb! A real eye-opener. Fr. Kappes is really well informed about the historical questions related to Scotism and Thomism.

Awesome, thank you for having him on.
Excellent show, gentlemen!
Astounding.

I agree. I've read Fr. Bettoni's book on Scotus, and it wins hands down.

This whole discussion confuses me. I think I'm missing something or some basic reading.
