- Many years ago, during a match played in the deserts of Sharjah, a young off-spinner named Saqlain Mushtaq invented a new type of delivery, which has since become known as the "Doosra". Whilst many cricketers have tried to follow in Saqlain's footsteps and bowl the "Doosra", very few have been able to do so without breaching the ICC rules for bending the elbow.

Saqlain invented doosra when limit was just 5°, but it is 15° now yet doosra is extincted.

Videos of doosra analysis of saqlain, murali, saeed, harbhajan are available on UA-cam easily... watch them and you will know that only saqlain bowled doosra from side of his hand, every other bowler bowled it from back of their hands, in simple words if you are trying to bowl doosra from back of your hand then you are most probably chuking whereas saqlain's doosra was more of a carom ball thing,,,, watch the videos and you will see

It's not 15. After Ajmal's ban, they got rid of the 15 degree rule. Also in Saqlain's time, everyone bowling the doosra was chucking it besides Saqlain.
Dosra, reverse swing, reverse sweep, Neutral umpires, Tape ball.... all are the contribution of Pakistanis to the game of cricket!
T20 cricket too. Karachi cricket introduced competitive t20 to the world in late 70s.
Without Pakistans contribution cricket would not have been same

Saqlain was bowling dusra in 95 test series in australia.. Saqlain used to bowl dusra by flicking his 3rd finger not from the back of his hand. Thats why his action remained within legal boundaries unlike murli and others who used the back of hand technique

The Pakistan Australia Test series in Sharjah happened in 2002. Saqlain has been bowling the doosra since 1995-96, and the term came in vogue in the 90s.
Batsmen: Can literally turn 360° and do things like reverse sweep.
Bowlers: No more than 15°
15 degree rule is fine...It wudnt make sense to play cricket if this rule is not there....Rather umpires should allow the bowlers to bowl in whichever hand they want, from whichever end they want,....they should not be forced to inform such things to the umpires .. Batsmen never informs you whether he plays right handed or left handed...why should bowlers do...bowlers should surprise them....

No sir, not only those.... large majority of the bowlers were doing the same...then the ICC changed the rules so that it is practical for the bowlers ... They kinda calculated the average angle of deviation for many bowlers and after enough scientific research, they concluded it at 15 degrees....

Pakistan always produce very good bowlers and try something different like Doosra, reverse swing. There was an interview where Wasim Akram said to an Aussie tv channel.. you guys didn't know how to do it or didn't know how to play it, you guys called it ball tampering.
Wasim, Waqar, Imran Khan, Saqlain Mushtaq. Before the controversy I really liked Asif and Aamir. Hopefully they bring out more bowling talent.
Thank you for posting this. I remember when Murali was being attacked in Australia for bending his elbow but I would always say that Glenn McGrath bent his arm as well but no one would say anything about. I never knew, until now, that he had been investigated and found to be a chucker to the rule was changed to accomodate him and other fast bowlers.

One of the interesting thing that the video missed was that when analysing the bowling actions of a wide variety off off spinners, the experts concluded that only subcontinent bowlers (not all of them) were able to bowl it legally. No Caucasian or west Indian bowlers were able to do it.
This also lead to a few aussies working on developing a backspinner that moves the other way but from a different mechanism.

Interesting. Saqlain developed a spin repertoire with, mainly, his fingers. He was able to move the ball either way with much the same action. The Indian batsman Yuvraj once stated that Saqlain signalled the coming of a doosra by a slight change in his stance. This was the innings when Yuvraj scored a lot of runs off him,so maybe he had discovered something that reduced Saqlain’s effectiveness. Anyhow, soon after that Saqlain disappeared from our team.

@@riazhassan6570Similarly in Sri Lanka, there was mystery of Ajanta Mendis with his carom ball which people failed to play. Then there was Virender Sehwag who decoded his carom ball and started hitting him and then Mendis career went downhill.
To this day, the best Doosra I ever saw was the first one I saw, way back in 97, when Saqlain bowled one to either Symmonds or Martyn in the triangualar ODI series that finished the Aussie summers back then. He bowled it from really wide, almost on the return crease, let it drift in at the very accute angle to middle stump on a good length, spun away, and hit the bail. I remember going 'hey when did Saq start bowling leggies?' because it looked like a classic Warnie dismissal to be honest, only for the replay to show that it was an off spinner but with a thumb flick. It was beautiful to behold.
I personally think Bowlers face more scrutiny than Batsman.

The straight delivery you are talking about was another variation. His doosra would spin like a leg break. Watch his dismissal of Gilchrist in 2001 odi series in WI when saqlain bowled him with a doosra which spun from outside off stump to hit middle stump from over the wicket.

I am bowling doosra since my childhood. I can bowl it with Different fingers and different actions. But alas!!! Can't replicate Saqlain. Because as far as I think Saqqi bhai is the only one who bowled it with legal arm action as per icc rules. It requires an enormous energy of fingers and the shoulder to bowl a doosra with legal action.
Off spinners now have the carrom ball to produce the doosra effect. Although it's flat and doesn't have much flight, the turn is produced in the desired direction.
Carrom ball can be easily picked by the batsman.
Kids gets banned for bowling doosra: saed Ajmal, Senanayaka, botha and shillingford.

@@akiladesilva7422 what i meant was that only Saqlain bowled it with a normal action. murali's abnormality gave him an advantage in so far that he used it to bowl the doosra. And we will never know if he could bowl it with a straight arm.

Good off spinners are very rare these days. It was not the case a few years back..
I remember Saqlin said that he practiced 18 months for Doosra before bringing it to the international game. Of course his action remained legal as he knew how to correctly deliver without breaking rule…
the fact that all people from other nationes missing is murali cant straight his arm 180 like others due to his birth defect in his both arms so accourding to you guys hes a chucker lol , he is a legend he is the best spiner, he has nothing to prove .
Ajmal also had a accident because of which he couldn't straighten his arm but when he was on his peak, ICC amended their laws ruling out the exception of medical condition. That was kinda unfair to change rules like that all of a sudden.
If he couldn't straighten his arm he wouldn't have been able to bowl doosras.
I don't know why you can't admit that you have to chuck to deliver a doosra. Murali got away with chucking for a long time by accusing people of being racist, the cricket world then put up with chuckers for far too long. It got to the point where the sport was becoming a joke because there were so many bowlers just blatantly throwing the ball down the pitch. The ICC realised it had to enforce the rules to protect the game and stop it turning into baseball. Ever since the crackdown, the doosra disappeared

Saqlain was the one who invented 'Doosra' and bowled it legally. Later some over enthusiastic media tried to make it Harbajan's invention. With all due respect to Harbajan, Saqlain is way up in class.
You need hypermobility or double jointed wrists to bowl doosra without using the elbow illegally.
They should allow such bowlers rather than have a blanket ban. That delivery was a nice addition to cricket.
Same with fast bowlers with hyperextension elbows like Shoaib. Let them use that it adds to the game.
1:13 Doosra actually means second/2nd in most languages of the Indian Subcontinent including hindi-urdu, it's also used in reference to mean other.
Anything Bowlers could do to balance the game should be encouraged, I'm hoping for Switch Bowling to be legal someday as well as double play.

Fact : Saeed Ajmal and Muhammad Hafeez were the two players banned by ICC for breaching the "15 degree rule." At the time of their ban, Saeed Ajmal was the number 1 ODI bowler in the world. Muhammad Hafeez was number 2 ;)

What a great man. I saw him interviewed on Australian TV and he is a man of dignity. A man of class and everything you would want from a cricketer. A legend of a human being. And he chucked every ball he bowled. If he was Australian he would not have made it past third grade local cricket. We crucify chuckers in Australia, and Murali was a chucker. Every ball was illegal and only reverse racism allowed him to continue. Great man...but a chucker.
There was some suspicion about Ashwin's doosra as well. I read somewhere he played it safe and decided not to bowl it.

The off-spinner's legal equivalent of the wrong one is the arm ball. Off spinners should be using it more. Harbhajan used to bowl it. Vettori was an expert in it. Sad so many bowlers went behind the fad and lost their careers. Especially Ajmal who was a very good bowler otherwise. And not enough people use the the top spinner, which is sufficient to get edges to slips and all.
@@TheRealGod18 legally, an off spinner can't turn the ball a lot. Harbhajan's or Saqlain's turn is the maximum. You have to use your wrist like Muralitharan to turn more. But then your arm will bend more than 15 degrees. I have played with a guy who used to bowl like Muralitharan. Indian team bowling coaches asked him to use just his fingers instead of the wrist. He lost a lot of turn and kick in his bowling.
But harbhajan didn't face any problem from ICC for bowling Doosra

Saqlin's doosra was different from other bowlers. He uses the ring finger more unlike other bowlers.

Well there is carrom ball which does the same...Though it's very easy to pick it using the action,Ashwin learnt to mask it intelligently....This should be enough.... Though doosra would be much effective....
It means until 2005,McGrath,Shawn Pollock were bowling with suspect actions...and their wickets are all suspected..they both became legitimate after ICC changes in rules..
Both retires after 2,3 years..so sad ICC itself changes the rules to legitimize these kind of bowlers...
Saeed Ajmal's career was finished because of ICC..he was the no.1 test and t20 bowler when he got banned in 2014 just before a year of Cricket World Cup 2015..and he was a main bowker of Pakistan team..same in the case of Mahammad Hafeez..It means ICc

Me also spin the bowl with different direction with off spin action; but this is how when we change the bowl shape to fine leg too third man sometimes it happen by changing in atomsphere so this is not dosra: dosra is totally opposite thing from off spin

I think if you are a spinners then u have give some relaxation as compared to fast bowlers. And, I think the faster one should not allowed by a spinner. I know most of the times Shaid afridi bowls a fast delivery whose pace is more than what the spinners usually bowls.
So they change the limits to make the Aussie and English bowlers action legal.
