    Dad came home with 2 of these when we were kids and lived a bit out of town back then and we ran them right on the road in front of the house. Mom drove one after we had been running them for well over a week, made Dad get rid of them because they were way to fast for us kids. He traded the 2 Indy 500 karats for 2 mini bikes and motor cycle and a station wagon all running and driving. We boys all still wanted the Indy 500 karats back. Still talk about it with Dad every now and then to this day, because they were the coolest thing around back then, and twice as fast as the ones you pay to ride at the go karat racing track down the street about a half mile.We 3 boys (Dad included as a boy in this count) never forgave Mom for making us get rid of them.

    Due to its age and rarity is say keep this stock and do a sympathetic resto. But take a mold from the body and build a custom framed single cylinder screamer (maybe a 125 from a Yamaha yzf road bike... 15bhp and 12k rpm) 👍.
    Keep up the good work guys, love the channel. Makes me want to get my old atc70 working and road legal.

    • @modelnutty6503
      @modelnutty6503 6 років тому +1

      yup! and making a mold CAN be easy as paper mache. go thick, cut it off, lay up the fiberglass inside to make the new shell.
      this may SOUND crazy, but it's so awesome... flip a canoe upside down on saw horses, light coat of oil, lay up saran wrap from bottom to top like shingles or tar papering a roof. it takes a LOT of newspaper and waterproof wood glue to build up 1/4" to 5/16" thick, but when it dries it's lighter than you'd think. peel it off, sand primer and paint. give it wood gunwales, bow+stern pieces, cross braces, seats, and enjoy a brand new PAPER canoe! so simple once set up and told how to do neatly, a couple children can even do most of the paper+glue work. it's off season right now, excellent time to borrow a canoe a couple months to make one from. do it right, the canoe used as mold wont get messed up at all either. to make it TOUGH, just one layer 4-6oz fiberglass cloth with epoxy resin and carbon powder mixed in will give some serious abrasion resistance.

    • @Vamp_Tepez
      @Vamp_Tepez 6 років тому

      @Justin Chauvin I do have lots of stories. It is nice if you are into motorsports. We have IMS around the corner. We have the speedrome outside of downtown. And we have IRP which is now lucas oil raceway. So we get tons of racing within 20minutes drive of me. I have done amateur factory fwd racing at speedrome. I've worked the u.s. nationals at the dragstrip. We have the championship late model figure 8 race at the speedrome. Only thing I wish we had was just open day road course for everyday vehicles. We pretty much have everything else but that. The 500 though is a great race to experience. You've got a couple months until then. We always have tons of out of towners and people from out of country come in. There is a reason it is called the largest single day sporting event. Crowds are massive. Especially with the resurgence of indycar.

      Vamp Tepez - I’m originally from Indiana and going back to the 500 this year for the first time in maybe 20 years. Can’t wait! Now that I’m older and having a major nostalgia trip, I’m hunting for an original promotional type Indy car kart from the 80s that I remember drooling over as a kid. 😎

A "rich kid" in my neighborhood, had TWO carts with different bodies, little Mags on them. lol. they were so cool looking. I believe one had a Ford Cobra body shell, can't remember the other.He raced around his oval track in his field. We kids weren't allowed to go near the track, but we could watch from his fence ! Talk about a blast from the past... Yes I do remember these from 50 plus years ago... I would drool over the ads in PM and PS. As I remember they had two engine options a Clinton 2.5/3 hp motor and a McCulloch MAC-101.
    Splashing a mold is not an issue because of the age. But you are going to need to make it a two piece mold for the front and back wrap under. I use to work building boat molds so If I can help you with info let me know.

      I'm out here on the left coast and it's the slow time of the year... If I had the funds I would enjoy helping them make a proper mold so they could make them and sell them.
      Mold making is part science and part art, the big thing is get the plug right before you start the mold. Plug finish is just about everything.
      CrewCut made a number of fiberglass bodies. I remember this Indy/Le Mans body, and a Model T body. I think they had a Dune Buggy styled body too. It's just been to many years ago.

    I've got a suggestion for future content and it starts with a story.
    When I was 12 years I had a go kart and my best friend down the road didn't. His family was very poor and couldn't afford anything like that. But what he did have was an old running push lawn mower (3 HP if I'm not mistaken) and some old bicycles from his older brothers and we had my dad who when I was 12 could make anything out of nothing.
    My dad was aware of my friend Carl's situation and decided to do what he did best, make something from nothing. He took 2 of the bicycles, the mower engine, some scrap metal he had laying around and made the coolest go kart I've ever seen. It wasn't real fast or anything but to Carl, it was a dream come true and he and I had so much fun riding our karts all over the place.
    So my suggestion is simple. Build a simple go kart using just junk many people might have laying around, like old bicycles, mowers etc. Nothing extreme, just simple that even a kid might be able to build.

    I have actually had the rare honor of seeing a full-sized one of these. One thing that i would like to mention is that the real versions of these had tires around 4 feet in diameter, so a cool thing to do with this one would be making it scale and refurbishing everything on it, no need for speed for this to be cool. It's already awesome enough.

You're right we need to find out what engine it came with and find another one and rebuild that engine to like-new Specs if you can and restore this thing and use as many original parts as you can. When you do it will be a time capsule of what was going on in the 1960s. Maybe slower and less powerful but it was what they did back in the day. The model H30 on your Tecumseh motor does mean it's a 3hp. I believe these engines where in production in the 70's for gokarts and minibikes. Yours having a aluminium flywheel confirms that. I bet y'all five dallors that that old girl had a small 2stroke. I've seen similar old fiberglass carts like that, they didn't have a hole cut out on the top because they did use a low profile 2stroke engine, this one looks like the owner thought it was too underpowered, and cut a hole out to fit that 3hp. some old posters of midget Indy 500 racing shows very very similar body styles, I would look up some of those old pictures and see if you can find one that looks almost like yours.(with the hole not their of course)

    I used to work at a lawnmower/small engine repair shop long long ago and that motor looks like it came off a Hawn reel mower they used tech. motors quite often and the reason they were frowned upon by a lot of mechanics is because of the coil being under the flywheel. instead of just setting an air gap you actually had to set the timing with a dwell meter ect. which really was a pain compaired to B&S motors etc. Good luck hope this helps!

    awesome find guys! a couple personal opinions... if you could find a period-correct "original" engine (probably not), then by all means do a full on period-correct restoration. Since that is probably going to be about as easy as finding a unicorn, then i would say to do a "resto-mod" type build. don't cut it up at all, but go ahead and throw some modern horsepower, tires, live axle, and brakes along with some serious elbow grease to shine 'er up again and you would have a seriously bada$$ retro machine that is not only a head turner, but a true performer as well.
    as always, you guys are awesome and keep doing what you do and we'll keep watching! Happy New Year!

  • @ExaltedDuck

    I like the restore-to-original idea. It would be awesome to build a modern successor, too, like a tribute in style and form but with the last 50 years of best backyard engineering principles applied.
