Uncle Seymour's tears melt my heart. He knew Townes was headed down a bad road. He was a neighbor and friend of Townes and Cindy. An old time blacksmith by trade.

This is what Country music is supposed to be...
The old man in the video is Uncle Seymour Washington. He was a good friend of Townes and worked as a traveling blacksmith and handyman. He appears in the documentary, that others have already mentioned, as a sage and storyteller. The part where he cries was actually a clip from when Townes was playing "Nothin". (I have previously requested Colter Wall's cover but both are amazing and equally haunting). Mr. Washington died a year after this appearance and I think he heard something in those lyrics that moved him. Don, I bet if you react to this song, I have no doubt you'll hear a few of the things that might have moved this nice old man so strongly. :-)

@David Emswiler Challenge accepted, and on the list. The good thing about the time that elapses between a request and my recording/reaction is that I forget all the nuances and end up doing the reaction without much recollection of the impetus for the request. So what you'll see is what my virginal brain experiences. :-)

the part where Mr. Washington is crying is from the performance of Waiting Around to Die. Townes didn't perform Nothin' in that documentary.

      @davidemswiler4351 4 роки тому +1

@@txdrifter38 You could definitely be right as its been awhile since I watched it. The "Nothin" video on UA-cam shows him crying as does this one...I might have gotten confused as to which was which. Either way, at least Don will be reacting to both.

    • @davidemswiler4351

@@txdrifter38 @RockN2Country Yep, my mistake. The song "Nothin" was not the song Mr.Washington cried to even though the video show's him doing so. ua-cam.com/video/dF_3w_gXing/v-deo.html I must have flipped them around in my mind but txdrifter caught it. Don, looks this reaction will be truly "virginal" after all. :-) Here's a link to the soundtrack from the documentary just in case anyone's interested. www.amazon.com/Heartworn-Highways-Original-Picture-Soundtrack/dp/B01DXZ78H6

The crying man is Uncle Seymour Washington. The traveling blacksmith was what he was known by back then out in Texas. He was a blacksmith and traveled around doing work. He didn't have transportation, so he either walked or got rides.

That video is from the movie “Heartworn Highways”. The beginning of the video you hear Guy Clark doing “That old time feeling “. It’s a great movie that occasionally is free on UA-cam. It was filmed in the mid 70’s but wasn’t released until the 80’s after the outlaw country movement took off.

Townes Van Zandt was one of our best songwriters. Steve Earle said "Townes Van Zandt is the best songwriter in the world and I'll stand on Bob Dylan's coffee table in my cowboy boots and say that."

This is one of my favorite songs ever. I've seen a lot of people dismiss townes because of his voice, but that's not the point. Townes is the best lyricist in country music history, and maybe all of music (sorry Bob). The footage is from the documentary "Heartworn Highways," all the footage is I think from 75'. Townes, Guy Clark, Steve Young, Coe, Charlie Daniels, Barefoot Jerry and a few others are in it. Super good.

There's an interview where Townes said he was at a bar talking with an old friend. He gave off these funny kind of vibrations. Later thinking of the man and the conversation he wrote this song. Townes said it was his first serious song. Perhaps the old man tearing up is the same old friend. Or he can identify with the story no doubt.
    Great sad song.

Uncle Seymour was at one time a walking blacksmith - He was also dying of an incurable disease at the time this was filmed
and he knew it - He was likely empathizing about some of his decisions in life...

Townes wrote beautiful songs. Try The Tower Song, No Place to Fall, Don’t Take It So Bad. These would be much lighter but still beautiful.
Townes wrote & recorded a lot of songs.
Check out Townes’ best friend Guy Clark he was a great singer/songwriter.
Uncle Seymour Washington was Townes’ neighbor at the time of this filming. It was filmed at Seymour’ s house. He died shortly afterwards. They loved each other✌️

The song that started playing at the end is I Still Sing The Old Songs by David Allen Coe. It proves what potential he had. It’s an amazing song.
The video itself comes from the music Documentary Heartworn Highways which features Townes, David, Guy Clark, Charlie Daniels, Rodney Crowell & Steve Earle among others. Most of the movie can be found in clips like this on UA-cam but it really should be watched as a whole. As great as it is though the deleted scenes are in my opinion even better.

I love that you did one of my all time favorite songs. But Justin Townes Earle died tonight. Do a song by the guy who was named after Townes. Far away in another town, who am I to say, someday I’ll be forgiven for this, here we go again, won’t be the last time, nothing’s gonna change the way you feel about me now. It doesn’t matter which song. Just listen to one of the all time greatest songwriters who we were robbed of tonight. I’m fucking heartbroken right now, and the only thing that could make it better is to spread his brilliance to everyone I possibly can.
