Townes is one of the best songwriters to ever walk the face of this Earth!

  • @bman6065

He wrote it after electro shock therapy. It was actually quite literal just worded to vaguely be similar to many people's experience. Also he wasn't playing Nothin in the video he was playing Waitin round to die they just dubbed the song over it for this UA-cam video from Heartworn Highways

@@johntsiaros2362 if you watch his documentary he was too self destructive to ever be successful. Although he did enjoy some success in the seventies and eighties. As far as "selling out" I don't think he would've ever allowed producers to tell him what to do. But he wouldn't have minded major recognition and a good paycheck as anyone else

He played once at the bar I used to work at, decades before I worked there. He's possibly my favorite singer songwriter.

That video is from Heartworn Highways, and the guy was crying as Townes was singing, Waiting Around to Die. Nothin is a bleak tune, Robert Plant does a nice cover of it with Allison Krauss.

Steve Earle once said “Townes Van Zandt is the greatest songwriter of all time and I’ll stand on Bob Dylan’s coffee table and say that.” In response Kris Kristopherson said “I’ve seen Bob Dylan’s coffee table and there’s no way you could stand on it.”

    • @brianalford1464

      Hey Paul
The quote was from Steve Earle "Townes Van Zandt is the best songwriter alive, and I'll stand on Bob Dylan's coffee table and say that", later Townes responded " well I've met Bob Dylan's bodyguards, and I don't think you could get anywhere near Bob Dylan's coffee table". Much later, Robert Earl Keen said," I understand that Steve Earle now lives in Bob Dylan's old apartment, I wonder if he ever gets the urge to jump up on the coffee table" (close as I can get to a quote).

I don't know where you heard that he was with a girl that young. The youngest relationships he ever had from what I have read was a 19 year old and he was 26. His second wife was of age when they started dating. He was not a pedophile. You are the first person to have ever said he was not a good person. Townes was a very good soul and had a great heart. While he did have his addictions and it unfortunately took him, he was a beautiful person on the inside and that is coming from all who knew him. It shows in his music as well.

One of the best songwriters Texas has ever produced... Someone mentioned Steve Earle named his son after him. Well his son turned out to be a pretty decent Alt-country artist. Could you react to "Movin On" by Justin Townes Earle (its a true story)? In case you don't like that one, my other favorites are "Halfway to Jackson" and "Lone Pine Hill".
BTW you might need to trade that Bulldog cap for a burnt orange one...yeah I'm referring to the Sugarbowl! Go Texas..we're ba-aaack!

The 'Horns are definitely back! My nephew just graduated from there, and was one of the guys who wore chaps onto the field during games and whatever else they do during games. Not sure why Charlie Strong wasn't able to get it done because he's a good coach, but you're back on track now.

Such a sad song and Townes the very voice for it - really felt sad for the man crying behind him - it is a complicated song I felt - Townes was some song writer -did he write it do you know Don? Sounds like his type of song - great reaction xxxx

  • @brianalford1464
    @brianalford1464 4 роки тому +1

Again, I'm playing catch-up with these reactions. Boy howdy did you nail this one!
I've been studying Townes' writing for 35 years and when you said you need to think about this one before reacting, you are 100% correct, these songs are complex poetry. But I can assure you that any line that he ever wrote was perfect; exactly crafted to his impeccable standards, with no ambiguity.
As for this song, its much older than the 2005 reissue. The video was from Guy Clark's house in Nashville. The older man was Townes' friend and neighbor, whom he called "Uncle Seymour", a blacksmith ( he's firing up his horseshoeing forge).
Unfortunately, the part about Seymour crying was spliced in. It was actually Seymour's reaction to Townes playing his song "Waiting 'Round to Die".
That being said, I can appreciate your not jumping the gun to prematurely judge and rate a song that is almost off the scale, in poetic terms, in my opinion.
    Keep on Rockin'!

Clips are from two films, one called Heartworn Highways and another called Be Here to Love me. You gotta see those films. Oh and buy Townes' Drama Falls Like Teardrops 2 cd set if you can! Big Country Blues and Flying Shoes and Tecumseh Valley and Kathleen are some other songs of his you may like. His song "Marie" has gotta be the saddest song ever made. All his songs are great haha. Once you get into Townes then you gotta get into Steve Earle as well, they're connected. Total badasses..I'm a Texan so I know so many good country tunes that hardly anyone outside the state even knows about..it's sad what doesn't make in on the mainstream airwaves. There's just so many great storytellers out there, Townes being the best imo.

I love his songs "Pancho and Lefty" and "Waiting Around to Die" from that Heartworn Highway documentary.
I wish I could pick like him. I somewhat learned how to play his version of "Pancho and Lefty", but I can't figure out how he plays picks the melody during the verses, and I can't figure out how he gets that hammer-on sound when he goes to the Am chord on that song.
