Clint Eastwood in 1969 movie Paint Your Wagon was AWESOME, and was far from the first or only time he was a singing cowboy on people's TVs or radios... as far back as 1961 he had an album called 'Rawhide's Clint Eastwood Sings Cowboy Favorites' with a slew of songs like 'Don't Fence Me In', and even sang in at least one episode of Rawhide itself. He also later sang in movies like Honkytonk Man, and even sang the theme track from his massively successful 2008 movie Gran Turino....

I'm guessing Raimi cast Topher Grace in large part because he looks so similar to Toby Maguire, the same way Scorsese cast Matt Damon in The Departed because he and Leo DiCaprio look similar. The whole "villain is an evil mirror image of the hero" thing.

      @SomewhatSlightlyBored Місяць тому +1

Some accounts say Raimi purposely miscast Grace out of spite because the studio forced him to put Venom in the movie when he didn't want to. Raimi wanted to keep his focus on adapting the silver/bronze age stories he grew up with. Venom didn't show up until late 80s and peaked in the 90s, by which point Raimi was more focused on his career and less invested in comics at the time. He didn't connect with Venom, and as a result we got 2 plots mishmashed together with Dancing Maguire in the middle.

Keanu Reeves' role in The Watcher wasn't even his fault. The director, Joe Charbanic, has directed some music videos for Keanu's band Dogstar, and deliberately wanted to see him play against type as the villain in his movie. Keanu wasn't interested, however, so Charbanic actually forged his signature on the contract and forced him into doing the film. Instead of doing a lengthy legal battle, Keanu decided to just do the film and was forced to receive 'union scale' salary while costars James Spader and Marisa Tomei each earned $1 million a piece. After Universal Pictures obtained the film's domestic rights, they got Keanu to agree not to disclose what happened until 12 months after the film's US release. So, all in all, Keanu Reeves got utterly screwed over with regards to The Watcher.

He did a film with John Travolta around the time, where he played a criminal/abusive step-father, and although the film itself wasn't great, Vaughn was believable in the role. Woods was pretty good in Adams' "Holistic Detective Agency".
And I'm with others on Paint Your Wagon. It was good and funny. It's an odd musical (they usually aren't light comedies), but the problems with it don't fall into Clint's lap.
One of the rules for Keanu Reeves movies (Wick being an exception) is that, when Keanu knows what is going on, when he's in control, it's usually a bad movie. When he has no clue and is trying to figure it out... it works. There are exceptions, but that's the way to be in any example. The Matrix is a perfect "good" example, with the two sequels being the "bad" example.

Gus Van Sant deserves credit for anticipating Vince Vaughan's later roles with PSYCHO, where he looked much more like the book character than Perkins (who, prior to the original had usually played handsome heroic types).
Clint Eastwood was right for PAINT YOUR WAGON - it often looks dumb to sing to the back row of a theatre in movies, and his rather restrained version of Partner matched his usual screen persona.
On the big screen Topher Grace had already done creepy in TRAFFIC.
Was Elizabeth Berkeley supposed to be a high school girl ad infinitum? (Or possibly play one with a completely unbelievable thing for Rpbert De Niro, even if it does get an Oscar nomination). Was she not good looking enough to be a dancer or stripper?

And Showgirls is a camp magnum opus. I would rather actors try something different even if it fails than just endlessly play the same thing. I always took it that it was a satire on the moral and emotional emptiness of some of those who participate in that industry, so the focus on surface and style made sense to me. Given interviews and commentaries, Elizabeth obviously had a different idea of what she wanted to do than Verhoeven and didn't quite get there - and given the fact that he has taken responsibility for the film's failings, it looks like he agrees with her concept with retrospect.

Obviously Garth is such an expert on what certain actors can play that he gets to do this list-despite calling nearly every one of them wrong. Guess everyone should just keep playing the same typecast roll without challenging themselves, right? Tell me, Gareth, when was the last time you played against type-meaning not an annoying, self-indulgent stooge who can’t pronounce names properly?

Green street Hooligans is great, everyone included! And putting the lousy watcher on the list ignores the fact keanu reeves was tricked to it did it just to let people contracted in the project not down,,but never was into the project.

Quick Question to the narrator. Do you know what a serial killer looks like? Do they have a type? Did Jeffrey Dahmer look like a serial killer? The dude lived in an apartment building with many other people and no one knew what he was. If I remember the case correctly he only got caught because one of his victims escaped from him. So saying Keanu Reeves didn't look the part in just bonkers.

Rubbish. It's an amazing movie and unlike most of today's cinematic output, which is mostly sub-Netflix fare or turgid superhero nonsense, it was genunely ambitious on a cinematic level.

Watch Keanu in Babes in Toy Land alongside Pat Morita and Drew Barrymore and there you can watch is basically the character Ted from Bill and Ted's excellent adventure in what looks to be if someone created a theme park in their own backyard with what they had on hand already from the shed.

Everything I've heard about The Watcher points to Reeves being trapped contractually to do that movie. Understandably, his performance is pretty weak. He was much more a fish out of water doing Shakespeare with the same delivery as Ted "Theodore" Logan.
As for Matthew Fox on screen and off screen issues, getting cut entirely from the final edit of World War Z which was another very troubled production didn't help.
As for Tom Hanks in Bonfire of the Vanities, EVERYONE should do themselves a favor and read Julie Salamon's book, The Devil's Candy:The Anatomy of a Hollywood Fiasco. There was so much wrong with that adaptation, that I doubt you can really lay blame to Hanks or DePalma.

Why do I keep clicking on these? The AI that What Culture uses doesn't quite understand what "playing against type" means. I'm not sure the host knows what it means. Most of these are off the beaten path movies. So they are going to be a bit off. But, seriously? Did you really not see Moose in The Fanatic as an obvious neuro divergent person?
    Nope! He's just a quirky psychopath....👀 WTF?
