  • We recently invited UA-camr @Sam'sTrains to put the Hornby Santa’s Express through its paces with a 48hr endurance challenge. Could Santa depend on this locomotive to help deliver his presents to those hard to reach places during the festive season?
Find out just how well the Santa’s Express does as it runs non-stop for two days!
We supplied both the Santa’s Express Train Set and accessories free of charge.

Reasons why Sam is one Santa's nice list:
    Provides people with good vids
    Answers peoples comments
Makes good jokes (the trumpet when Edward got stuck)
Makes good Thomas the tank episodes
Reasons why Sam is on Santa's naughty list:
    Drowned trains for testing
Runs trains for long periods of time
Telling trains to do an agility test causing some to derail

Naughty; pretending to be impartial while taking money from anyone he can.
Getting furious about being called part of the model railway press, yet doing the same if not worse shill reviews and product placements than traditional print media reviewers.
      👌
A badly injection moulded coal load for christmas this year is what santa is saying.

Excellent experiment and just shows how well the motors withstand running continuously for 48hrs. You would think it would of over heated as no way of cooling the motor.
Well done Hornby! and well done Sam for taking the challenge.

I setup one of the Hornby Santa trains at work under a a Christmas tree. It ran 9 hours a day for about 22 days(no weekends). I would clean it and oil it in the mornings. Reverse it every second day to limit the wear and it ran beautifully. Went to set up the following year and the motor had seized up, so put put Thomas in front for the second year. Have been meaning to fix/replace the loco, but it hasn't happened yet.

Hornby locos are much more reliable than you think. I have 2 locos in a garden railway they have been converted to use a rechargeable battery and have been outside 24/7 for 3 years now in rain, snow, ice and have never been oiled or serviced and they run perfectly. I have an 0-4-0 and a class 73. They have each run almost every day (to keep them from seizing up) in all weather and have covered thousands of miles. The only issues so far is the 73 after 2 years has shed its traction tyres so no longer pulls as much as it did. The 0-4-0 has very well warn and weatherd wheels so has huge amounts of grip and can now pull 12 new coaches or 6 extremely worn out coaches that have been outside for 3 years. They are going to last another 3 years no problem. P.s a rechargeable 9v battery lasts hours. These locos are test locos and my main collection is of course strictly for indoor use.

The gunk on the straights and not the curve is probably because the traction is better on the straights so the wheels don't slip so much and scrape the gunk back up...

Hi Sam, great test. A theory about the dirty track - the model doesn't have a differential for the axles, so there must be some 'scrubbing' effect on the curves, where the wheels are going faster or slower than the actual train speed and this doesn't happen on the straights. Did real locomotives ever have differentials? Never seen it mentioned

    • @DiegoLiger
      @DiegoLiger 4 роки тому +1

The coning of railway wheels act as a differential for going around curves. It's the coning and not the flanges which keeps a railway wheel centred on the track and mean it can go round curves.

The reason the gunge builds up on the straights is on the curves the wheels slip due to the shorter distance the inner wheels have to cover when compared to the outer wheels which rotate at the same angular velocity This results in the wheels picking up the gunge on the curves. When it hits the straights the wheels stop slipping and despost the gunge on the straights. Of course this phenomina is accentualed with radius 1 curves

I have always been impressed with the running power of these 101 type locos. I have all except 102 of the GWR locos. I have the ' Santa express' which I love. My experiment was to double head it with the 'Crimson King' on analogue and they together pulled 10 wagons. How many more they can pull maybe another experiment for you. The two red locos make excellent 'companions' and look good running together. I'm very impressed with your two day trial.

I think the black gunk was more on the straights because both wheels were running at the same speed as the track. On the corners, both wheels are running at the same speeds but the track is shorter on the inside, creating some slippage on one or the other and rubbing the tracks clean. There isn't this slippage on the straights. I wonder if it was a protective coating they put on the track from the factory to prevent rusting?

Hi Sam….yes this is a little late! Lol….anyway….just a message to say how much i enjoy your channel…Anyway i was passing a very nice model shop near where I live (West HallamDerbyshire) and i spotted this set….I love model trains having had a layout at my parents house in the 70’s. So i though why not have a little in-expensive set ! With the excuse ‘its for the bottom of the Christmas tree’! This is with the view i can add to it and get some bit n bobs if i take to it again after many many years. As i write this (27/11/2021) Is running in on the floor in the font room…lol its an adorable little thing! I have been itching for some time to get a starter set to dip my toe..and this feels really good…
Anyway looking forward to this years Christmas Sam video. All the best ….Cheers!

Jingle bells, jingle all the way,
Oh what fun it is to ride in a Sam's Trains open sleigh.
You can look at one of my videos where I have the two Santa's Express Trains running together, in opposite directions. This video is so full of festive fun. Glad you ditched the Santa Beard, and just had the Santa hat on your head. I'm in the Christmas Spirit as much as you are. You deserve another Christmas story.
Sam was thinking hard. What do you give to a 23-year-old who's already got everything a Railway Modeller could ask for? It was getting harder each December to think of what more he could possibly want. This December, of 2019, was no exception. His mind was a blank.
Mother was trying to help with suggestions, but Sam already had what he wanted model railway wise.
Hit by a brainwave, Sam remembered something Kelly had suggested to him in his comment box.
"Where can I find Model Railway Snow?" he pondered.
"I'll see if I can't find some for you," replied Mother smiling. "Shall we go scouting for it?"
"Yes, please," answered Sam eagerly. So, on this one snowy day before Christmas Eve, Mother and Son visited all the model shops they could find. No model railway snow was to be found anywhere. Father caught up in his battered old Toyota. He had a little trick up his sleeves.
"Hang on, it doesn't have to be doom and gloom," he smiled, winking. "Have you tried Hatton's?"
"Dad, that's miles away," Sam pointed out.
"True, but I would never let my Son down. Hop in." One long car ride later, the battered Toyota, sky blue in colour, was parked in Hatton's Car Park. The family were invited into the shop.
"I'm looking for some...." began Sam. He never finished. Dave, as if he could read Sam's mind, disappeared and returned with a jar full of model railway snow.
"Model railway snow?" suggested Dave smiling. "Here, don't bother paying. It's a Christmas present from Jack and I to you. Merry Christmas, Sam." Sam took the jar politely and managed to utter a stuttering "Thankyou." The family went home, Sam with an ecstatic smile on his face. No Christmas present could possibly be better than a jar of Model Railway Snow. Merry Christmas, Sam. May all your Christmas Wishes come true, and hope you have a chuffing New Year. Peep, peep.
