A nice little set there Will, this will keep the children happy as I might get the set just for that, to set up under the Christmas tree, & use the presents, once delivered, as some kind of make shift tunnel. that will keep them entertained for hours, Thanks for shearing &
Happy Modelling,
Phil
It is good that Model Railway manufactures produce these cheaper starter sets. This will help young people get "hooked" on the hobby and later move onto more expensive models.
I agree, if they put exquisitely detailed locos and quality controllers would make the set more expensive, which means two things: A: You could snap bits off and B: Fewer people will get into the hobby because it is so expensive
£40 at Argos atm. Got one as a Christmas dec for around the tree. Add some panel detail, snow weathering, job done.
When I was probably around 6-7 Years old, I was bought a Hornby Passenger Express train with the Apple Green LNER B12 Holden No 8544 and an MSLR Tank Engine Mixed Traffic for Christmas. The mixed Traffic was a basic set (starter set) and the B12 was a passenger starter set. Then I bought the railroad Flying Scotsman A1 DCC Ready back in 2014. For a railroad range model, it is surprisingly detailed excessively. Then at the start of 2015 I bought the TTS Sound Railroad hornby Gadwall, which again, isn't too bad on the detail, but it is a very old engine after all and is now probably a heap of scrap out somewhere in the North Eastern Region.
I do have a Tender Driven Mallard and a Pannier Tank 64xx but they aren't really all good, being non DCC Locos.
loved this tiny little set, but remember when criticising the detail, and how cheap everything is, it's A for fun and B a starter set
and C, for kids
Ah nostalgia....why did UA-cam just suggest this vid to me in 2023. I guess it worked - I watched it!
I'm getting this set for Xmas!
Wow, what a nice video! Very festive. I would like to see you put sound into that locomotive. I am just getting back into the hobby after 35 years away from it. Always enjoy your video's.
Cheers!
Keith
Fit sound! Fabulous review!
I have been watching this channel for 5 years
I can say the same!
judahrice I just subscribed to you
My Daughter just bought me this for Christmas. Its unique and may never be released again, so I look forward to receiving it. It may be a little unrealistic, but Thomas the Tank engine was once only a childrens story, but now you can see him at many heritage railways. I think its a fun train and look forward to adding it to my collection. Great video Will.
even though the shell may be one piece, it still looks pretty good to me.
also for some reason, that shade of red is just eye-catching.
I like your idea about putting a chip into it so it can play Christmas songs as it's going around the tree
I challenge you to fit sound to the loco :-) Another great review, just in time to get us into the festive spirit.
It was difficult to install a Hornby 8 pin decoder into a pocket rocket 0-4-0. I doubt whether there is enough space left to mount a speaker into the loco. But there is plenty of space to install the decoder and install a speaker into the reindeer box van or under the presents in the goods wagon. Just wire a harness from the loco to the next wagon where you install both the decoder and the speaker. There is plenty of space in the loco for a wires.
To be honest, I don't really expect him to do it, but I thought the challenge would make for an interesting video.
It just looks a fun, happy, thing. And if it inspires children to build on the model railway, then it's done it's job and a fantastic thing.
Awe cute should get one for the Christmas tree so my wee nephew can have a load of fun
another great video, very relaxing to watch with a cup of tea
It would be nice if hormby made a Xmas train set with sound and smoke to make it look more real and nicer going round the tree great video
That would make the set more expensive, which will mean not that many people will buy it, but I do see the point
+nutfield001 I understand that just and idea for at Christmas
I might get one they look really enjoyable. Perfect for under a christmas tree. Great review. :)
A nice set for a bit of fun (young and old) at this time of year :-) thanks!
I think one thing I'd do is hit the train with some white weathering powder. Make it look like it's been snowed on.
Fit sound video👍👍👍
These cheapo train sets are great for kids. I got one in the late 90s, I think it was only £40 or some such.
Nice wagons :)
Saw this set in the shop a week ago, inspired me to make up my own Christmas train formation, of which I'll have a vid on soon. Unfortunately no special present wagon as these seem to be very hard to get hold of once Hornby sell out
The figures don't look a lot different to a Flying Scotsman locomotive with 'glowing firebox' that had them which I got when I was a child in 1971! (And oh how I squealed on Christmas Day when I unwrapped that).
This set reminds me of the 'Local Freight' train set with the Little Giant loco. Great review tho :)
Appears to be the GWR O-4-0 Holden tank loco with a different paint job from train sets and packs.
I enjoyed that Will..... Now I'm entering the Christmas spirit...😃
Hornby have of late been getting significant mileage out of those 0-4-0s, I keep seeing new variations on the theme every month!
Fantastc review Will! You've really got me excited for Christmas!
Dan
even though the model is a cheap one, it has a nice shade of red.
The wagons are very festive and nice review. Cheers, Matt.
Nice little set wish I had a layout as big as yours for my ivatt or pannier
And when you think about it, that little 0-4-0 model has been in the Hornby range since at least 1978, back when it was in GWR livery as number 101.
I'm not sure whether to approve of the longevity of the model, or tut at how Hornby hasn't updated stock like that, or the Holden B12, for nearly 40 years.
Great review Will well done.
Hi
great vid will cant wait for more
Great festive review Will, have a happy Christmas !
Oh, oh, oh....one wonders if Hornby do them selves any long term good with these sets? Not enough to grab a kids interest ?
I got the Hornby Santa Express last years Christmas
IC82 you must add sound to that train i cant wait to see you try
Nice shoes XD
I don't see your problem, there are many little kids who would love this set for christmas, and for around 30quid you cant go wrong.

Be
falconoilcompany about. I'll try calling
Ian Mangham about what
What did
somewhat amusingly (to me anyway) is the fact that of all my locos (in OO or On30) the best runner of the lot is a late 1980s vintage Percy 0-4-0. I have no idea why it runs so well or controllably but it puts some of the newer models to shame.
It's not too surprising the cab detail is on the basic side: A. it's a tad masked, and B. the GWR 101 tooling is not only old but originally made for die-cast. Contrast this with a later tooling like the E2, which has considerably greater molded cab detail.
As far as the wide tension-locks go... I maintain that they're better than slimlines (the visual gain on slimlines is _really_ miniscule in exchange for the performance drop). And, well, Hornby kinda molded themselves into a corner way back when they updated the range to using mostly-plastic tension-locks: on several bogie and chassis toolings, the loop and the hook mount are an integrated part of the mold rather than a separately-fitted piece. Which would make any sort of update a headache on their end, and also makes coupler repair or replacement a pain for we modellers.
With all the Christmas sets they do, its a pity Hornby haven't made a seasonal trackmat
A good festive effort - seasons greetings !!!!
Hornby use that shape for 0-4-0 locomotives all the time, like how I have the 'rambler' train set which just has a different design, but also the same colour too.
Gamer Glory Well the 0-4-0 loco is Hornby's cheapest loco used for their cheap starter train sets. However Hornby still sells larger locos with their starter train sets, at a much higher price.
Yes, it was my FIRST loco and set so I can't complain
What a nice little set. How much was it and do you think i could get just the loco.
Great video there Will!
Merry Christmas and have a good one!
i love this
I've already got that train set. Really enjoyed the Jingle Bells Tune echoing around you as you put the track together. Sam of Sam's Trains Status has the exact same set himself. In his video, Santa's Express Set Unboxing & Review, the Jingle Bells Tune plays around him as he does what you've done. Watch the video yourself, if you don't believe me.
Well done mate good job and have a happy new year
If Saint Nick really had a train, it would be pulled by a mighty Dutchess.
zardoz2 The Polar Express in the book and movie is pulled by a big Berkshire, 2-8-4.
Nah, Thomas the Tank Engine!
Perhaps Thomas should pull the Christmas train!
No Percy got painted red and gold by Santa's elves .
That engine looks nothing like Percy
You would have thought Santa was rich enough to buy a livestock van instead of a box van for the reindeer. Obviously Hornby isn't.
+Jason The Tank Engine I'm going to get that and make a lady hornby
***** thank you, but it might be a very long as one because I'm still doing my room and I need to get my sodor railway to my house (it's not a small set it quite big and I just call it sodor cuz that's what I'm gonna use it for. P.S its custom
Nice little set I suppose for a youngster ,,,, but every crafty giving a track plan with 2 loops and sidings,,, Little Johnie is soon going to be asking for more track so his train can go into the shed,,,, ,,,, nice watch ,, thanks ,,,
Great video will!! Have a good Christmas! Good review :)
Fit sound with DCC! And show us a video of it round your tree
0:45. A present WITH wagons in. :)
I personally don't like buying 0-4-0 locomotives as the motor is too powerful for them but I just brought R1205 set today on the cheap from asda
Please try and fit sound to the locomotive it would be great.
Great Vid!
My Conclusion:
PACKAGING: 8/10
LOCO DETAIL: 6/10
PERFORMANCE: 8/10
ACCESSORIES: 7/10
OVERALL: 7/10
That train reminds me of Oilver
P.S i love ye videos
Hello Will

cheers merry Christmas buddy
Albert
Have a merry Christmas even know its 2018 and when the video started it was 2014
Woo!
YEAA... been waiting for your next video :D
Don't waste your time and money. If you want a quality Christmas train set, I highly recommend the Polar Express. Detailed locomotive, lifelike coaches and other rolling stock, and quality tracks.
Iron Horse Studios in some countries like Australia the polar express won't run properly because the electricity power in Australia is not enough to run it and the same in some other countries so for some people it is good
I was talkling about the real PM1225, a 2-8-4 Berkshire built in Lima Loco Works, Lima Ohio. That was the basis for what Chris van Allsburg called "The Polar Express."
Ho ho ho! Here it is, the festive Christmas tree tain set that everyone needs to have running around the base of their Christmas tree, at Christmas. (Too many Christmases?) Enjoy! - IC82, Tain?
Hmm, I'm seeing two or three of these, running in alternate directions, on concentric loops ...
I wish to say I think you gave some inaccurate info on the power track supplied if it is the same as the one supplied with some Western Master Train sets on sale in Australia to make it compatable with DCC then you need to remove the capacitor at the bottom. If I am wrong please be free to correct me.

I wish Hornby's trackmats didn't have dumb stuff like the printed-on cars, and had a just bare grass reverse side.
I'd love to see you paint those driver and fireman figures. And maybe the engine's details.
Ohey, you noticed the unpainted cab detail :3
Kinda odd they used a fully closed van and not a cattle truck.
And good that it's larger radius; not necessary for good running of that small rolling stock but improves the odds of it fitting 'round the tree stand.
A easy scenery trick is to buy green felt for grass, hobby and craft stores sell them in 3 square foot squares. Another easy scenery trick is to use grayish black roof shingles for ballast, just glue them onto your board layout under the tracks. Use black poster board for asphalt roads. While doing so may not be as realistic as Woodland Scenics stuff, there is no need to use and mix plaste, or use water mixed glue. Add some trees and bushes, and brushed out painted string for weeds. If girls use felt for grass around their doll houses, it is good enough for railroad layouts.
SeaToby11
There's actually ways to tease felt and make it look really realistic as grass.
ZeldaTheSwordsman You will be amazed how much cotton balls can be teased as well with a steel brush, or a Hush Puppy shoe brush. Spray paint the brushed out cotton balls in the same manner as string, and one can create bushes and trees. I use painted long match sticks and short match sticks for tree trunks, Paint the pencil shavings of a pencil sharpener will provide sufficient texture to bushes and trees. There is no need to buy any expensive Woodland Scenics products with a little ingenuity. Model railroading is much more than buying products already made.
Is it HO scale?
Wow:)
Simon come round to my house one day
Make it DCC with sound....
Can u do the new Hornby J94 next?
I have a feeling you watch Ashens.
Fit jingle bells
This set has been changed some time after this video. There's no track mat, other reviews say it comes with 1st radius curves and the box is a different shiny red colour with a X-mas scene across the back. Anyone know if it has any more differences? Thanks
yes do
And the coal, you can take out if your careful
Change motor to a High powered motor it's easy as that somky joe has a High powered motor . That's my tip
great vids - what controller would you recommend over this budget controller with these kits i have two but if they are not up to it then which one should i buy i am just waiting on my baseboard coming so i can begin to build and would like to get the new controllers asap thank you
like it
All the 0-4-0s are indeed updated with a better drive system.
Mine doesn't work could you do a video on how to service it please?
can fit sound plz
Can you do a iron duke revive
I have got the train set
when I got the santa express I didn't have any straights nor trackmat
Can you do the bachmann class 171
I have a lot of pocket rockets
Is oo the same as ho
Can you please have a look at Christmas coca Cola's by hornby it worth the money
I was considering getting this set but I think it's a bit over priced for what you get in the box. I would pay £40 max.
The Hornby shop in the outlet mall in Swindon retails this set for £40 right now and the Western Night Mail for £69
Doesn't Hornby make a Polar Express train set?
Reley festive
hi I'm having this as my first train set can I add other trains etc if so how do I do it plz
How much?
How.... Just.. How... You probably have a MILLION train sets.. AND WHERE DO YOU GET THE MONEY! WHERE! ARE YOU A BILLIONARE!?
