Wow, I actually didn't know a lot of these things! I definitely relate to the modesty thing as it's the same in Japan, but the rest were fairly new to me and the way you speak about Korean culture is really beautiful. I'll have to spend at least a few years there as well!

I remember going to a pretty authentic Korean restaurant here (with some Korean friends) not too long ago and I was kinda shocked by how you had to share everything at first... I was worried about getting sick too :\ but once I got over that it felt pretty nice! The 'community' vibe that Korean culture has is great, makes me feel like I'm not caring enough haha.

    • @Shaenova1

ChoNunMigookSaram Which 3 countries would they like to visit someday? Why? ;)
What cultural thing do they like about foreigners or westerns in particular? Why? ;)
If a foreigner wants to met a Korean while visiting Korea, how should one approach them? Do they like if they are approached to?
Speaking about westerns, what is the one thing that they are still curious about?
What do they most like about living in Korea?
I hope these questions were already not answered in your videos. If they were..sorry! And thanks for replying
back to me, you are awesome!

At first I didn't think it was possible, but I've been following you for almost two years, and I always get motivated by your videos. It's tough, but I know I have to be patient and to keep working towards it. I've come a long way with your help, and I know getting to fulfill my goals will be worth it in the end. Thank you for being an inspiration~

Damn, I wish I could show my legs without a care in this country (UK). I love wearing skirts and dresses but I'm always self-conscious and crazily keep pulling it down every 5 minutes just in case I'm showing too much leg. I think it's because of unwanted male attention being a constant threat so it always feels a bit daring to wear revealing things.
Also, about the no water thing, a lot of people are shocked when they hear this but I don't like water HAHA IT'S NASTY, if I drink it, it's by force! I only drink it when I have to (to swallow medication). I just drink tea, juice, squash and smoothies.

OMG thank you for mentioning the table manners thing! I've only been here a month and if what I need isn't in front of me, I just don't get it out of fear of offending my co-workers lol. Now I know that it's okay! This hand feeding stuff is still weird for me though. I was contemplating stocking up on hand sanitizer just this morning!

I think it's good that you've been changing and adapting during your stay in Korea. I'm sure some changes have made life easier for you anyway ;) and it's great that you've picked up on some of the good cultural things like sharing! Yep, air is about 22% oxygen, and that's what would spoil the snacks if it wasn't purged from the bag before sealing.

The sharing culture not always works in my opinion. For example, I can't eat pork, but in many cases with my co-workers we go on meetings to pork meat restaurants (kind of a tradition I suppose...), where we order a different dish especially for me. It would be great if only everybody didn't eat from my dish too (in meat-specialized restaurants there are other meals, but since they are not the main "attraction", they usually are just one-person portions, while meat can be ordered in bigger quantities), which results in me eating very little and ending up hungry... And since it's our superiors who order and pay for the food, I can't really ask them to buy me more, you know :P

    • @STasugx
      @STasugx 9 років тому +2

Ferraro Michela I know what you mean. I'm a picky meat eater- certain kinds of meat just disgust me. So I usually fill my plate up with veggies. Then we start sharing and I end up with a teeny tiny bit. Ah well. Sometimes you just gotta roll with it. :)

Hi Megan!! I love your videos! Can you make one about how you made friends when you first moved to Korea. Especially how you made Korean friends because from what I've seen from other foreigners in Korea, they tend to make friends with other foreigners, and not really socialize a lot with Koreans because of the cultural differences and, obviously, the language barrier.

My mother has always brought me up to share things with others no matter what. One day I was in park with friends having a picnic. We brought so much food, so we decided to share it with everyone who was sitting around us, even to those who were homeless/sleeping rough . So remember, sharing is caring.^^

These are so great and helpful, I had no idea about the sharing concepts - I think I'd feel so strange if people were just reaching across and grabbing whatever they wanted off my plate if I hadn't been aware that this is more normal. I really loved your insight about the allergies and I think you're right! Isn't it fun to see how much we transform?

I thought dreaming of moving to Korea was going to be scary and difficult because what if I don't do things right or what if I don't remember their culture well. For example, sharing. I'll probably forget to share. I don't have a problem with sharing. I share when people ask and even when they don't. Okay lol back to you. That's cool about the sharing food, it makes sense and should be more common in the states but like you said we grow up with this "mine" mentality and kids have to be forced or threatened to share toys but not food. It's the complete opposite when food is the object, unless you are at a pot luck. So interesting! Thanks for sharing! When you come home to Georgia you have to let us know how you or if you switch back, sort of like code switching but for customs instead of language.

It's weird but even though I'm not Korean (I'm Dutch) I've always had a more Korean mindset and Korean manners before I even knew about their culture at all! xD So I've always been "way too" respectful (according to my friends), "way too" modest, I always thought it wasn't necessary to date because I'm still young and have aaaall the time in the world and I always share everything with my family and friends... Before I knew about the Korean culture I would always feel a little bit weird and different, but now that I'm studying Korean and their culture I'm happy to know this is actually a thing and people (from the other side of the world however) actually act this way hahaha! I finally feel like a normal person! xD
    Anyway... Nice video! ^^ hahaha

I've noticed a few of these actually, just from watching Korean shows, and from watching other things. I honestly like, that they show less skin though, because I'm American, but I grew up with a older brother who never let me show my skin a lot, or get short clothing. So, I just got used to wearing clothes that show like no skin, or just things that show my arms only, and I always wear pants. And, what you was saying about sharing, I also noticed, that Korean boys, they are so cuddly, and in America we don't see that a lot, like here guys think it's like being gay, to be all touchy with other dudes, but when I watch Kpop groups, like what the boys are like in their dorms, they are very touchy, and cuddly with each other. So, when you said that they don't mind the germs, or sharing the same bowl, or they just cough without covering their mouths, I think it's the same, with the dudes, like they just don't mind sharing germs, or hugging. Which, I find really cool, and it's changed my mind a lot. I have also become more touchy with people I'm around, after watching Korean reality shows, with the idols. And the Korean shows too, and since I've been learning a lot about the Korean culture, I also kind of developed a habit, of bowing to say sorry, or excuse me. Lol, and sometimes I forget that I'm in America, so sometimes I say things in Korea, by accident. Plus, I live in Portland, so here it is very multicultural, so I sometimes see Koreans and I can understand a little what they are saying. And I sometimes reply to them, in my head..

I know you do the FADs but I think it would be fun if you talked about how your style changed (or if it didn't and you just had amazing style to begin with)

The sharing aspect reminds me of high school. In high school you shared EVERYTHING! Even if you had one stick of gum you had to share it with whomever wanted it. Bag of chips....forget about it! About the only thing safe was drinks (backwash!)

Mexico is kinda like that. When we have guest, we start serving them food drinks, or when you go over at someone's place, you bring something, like food, drinks, etc. I'm not everyone is like that but my mom always told be, if you don't plan on sharing, do not take it out.

To be specific the allergies are from having too clean a household and as well as too weathertight...sealed from natural air. Also not being exposed to animals and plants from a young age.

I haven't been a subscriber for long but I love your videos and snapchats! I was wondering if the sharing extends to drinks as well. So if I went to a café with someone would it be okay for me to offer them a try of my drink?
    Thanks for always sharing!

All positive changes and something all western cultures should change. Who gives a fuck aboot table manners wtf? As long food is not being spat on me and people don't stink I'm fine, and just don't try to reach in a bag of chips when my hand is already in there.

I'll propably have a huge problem with sharing my food because if there's one thing I HATE doing that thing is sharing my food, don't get me wrong I do share with friends and all but it's not often and it's not with 30 people you know haha. Love watching your videos.

I also see them ask for their favorite dishes instead of reaching over people. I guess it depends on which group you are with, if it's family or a group of friends at a restaurant.

I actually share a lot when I'm eating!!!! I feel totally okay with sharing!!! I even ask if anyone wants some if it's a food that can be shared lol I'm not gonna share a hamburger or barbecue wings I just wouldn't bring that to the workplace or event because it's messy!!!!!
