This episodes starts with me landing in Tokyo's Narita Airport, my first time ever in Japan! I then take the Skyliner bullet train over to Ueno station where my hostel is closely located to. After checking out my capsule hotel I head out for my first bowl of Ramen.
Day two began with me heading to breakfast at the local 7-Eleven convenience store. Following that, I took a stroll towards Akihabara Electric Town which I thought was incredible! The Namco Arcade was a highlight for me. During my time in Akihabara I noticed the annual Tokyo city marathon was taking place which was a sight to see.
It was then time to take the Tokyo metro to Tokyo central station in where I tried for at least 45 minutes to find the Imperial Palace. It took this long due to many subway exits being strictly controlled by police and not allowing the public through! Eventually I found it, walked around the beautiful Imperial Gardens before hitting a local cafe for a spot of lunch, pork katsu curry.
After lunch, I grabbed a coffee at Starbucks but not before I ran into a Tokyo pharmacy to pickup some cream for my hands. All ago towards the vibrant district of Shinjuku. I was elated walking around the streets of Shinjuku, truly a trendy cyberpunk vibe. I almost got tricked for the second time during the video at the currency exchange there but instead managed to find one that was quite a reasonable exchange rate! Later, I grabbed a quick bowl of soba noodles before getting back to my capsule hotel for a good night's rest.

日本に来たならそれなりのルールやマナーを調べてから来て欲しい。
あと堂々と英語が通じると思って話しかけられるのもあんまり嬉しくない。日本に来たなら日本語喋ってくれる？
ゴミ箱がないのは海外の人からすると結構困りますよね😂
チップを渡すのは失礼な訳ではなく、ただそのような文化が日本になくて驚いているだけです！店員さんもチップは受け取れないけれど、その気持ちが嬉しかったと思いますよー！

店員目線からするとチップを貰うとそのお金の処理が困るんだよね。
個人で貰うのはルール的にNGだから、店の責任者に色々と事情を説明する手間が増えちゃう。
個人営業でやってる店なら受け取ってくれるところもあるかもだけど。
チップ文化は日本だとストリートライブとか曲芸ならokのとこがあるけどそれ謎だよね...
チップは財務省が税金を完璧にとるために国家方針としてない文化を作ろうと奔走している。３０～５０年くらい前は普通にチップに近い概念は日本にもあった
I traveled to Japan twice last year solo...Only ever been to Greece (twice) which was organised and sorted by late partner...I spent 3 weeks in Japan in Jan 23 and 2 weeks in late Nov early Dec...I stayed in Tokyo and then traveled as far south as Kagoshima..and stopped of at Kumamoto, Hiroshima, Osaka and Kyoto on my way back to Tokyo...I pretty much walked everywhere unless using the Shinkansen between stays...I dont speak a word of Japanese and had never booked a trip in my life. (56 in a few weeks)...I did use the trains abit more on the second trip...As I stayed in the Yokohama and Tokyo area. I loved Japan...And wish I could return...But I truly wish I could of had my late partner with me...She would have loved it also.

The world can be roughly divided into two parts. It is Japan and other countries. I stayed in Japan for a few weeks, but every day was so beautiful and wonderful and fulfilling that I had the day to return home in no time. After a few days, I had very mixed feelings. Why didn't my country become like Japan?

Japan is intimidating, but it's a really great place to visit! The Tokyo subway is far easier to use than the unreliable buses we have in Auckland, New Zealand.

日本人は英語が不得意ですが、助けを求められたらよほど急いでいない限り何とか助けようとする人がほとんどだと思います。これは日本の誇りです。
I have to say, this is the most real vlog I've ever seen. No annoying music like most travellers use. Instead you fill it with live talking and impressions. There were lots of interesting thoughts popping up like, do the japanese realise how cool their cities really are etc.

The reason for the no picture/filming signs is due to Japan's extremely strict privacy laws. You're actually supposed to blur out faces unless you get each persons permission to show any representation of them on any media platform, including youtube. If they can be recognized in any way shape or form on any media without their consent, it is a violation of privacy laws, which is why a lot of shows in Japan, especially the NEWS, blur out most of what they're filming. For restaurants/stores, you're supposed to get permission to film inside.
For receipts at stores, see the little box of receipts (e.g. at 7-11) below where the receipt pops out, put yours in there if you don't want it. You leaving it dangling in the 7-11 cash register is rude for the next person who has to deal with the receipt you left to get theirs.
Money trays at the register, you put your money in the tray. Don't hand the money to their hand. If you see a tray, and there will always be a tray, use the tray.
Tipping..., as a US expat, I love the fact there is no tipping culture here, especially now with how ridiculous it's gotten. Leave that garbage culture out of Japan. And yes, it is somewhat insulting to them since they're just doing their job. The idea might be different today, but tipping has a dark legacy.

Tip is not required in Japan.If a clerk receives a tip, the cashier's calculations after closing will be disrupted. Some people are reluctant to accept excessive amounts of money from customers. So there's no need to tip. It's nice for store staff to hear a heartfelt thank you from a customer.

Hello, I just randomly ran across your channel because it popped up in recommendations and your thumbnail caught my eyes so I thought why not. I'm a Japanese guy used to live in Japan but now living in Vancouver, Canada for 30 years and I miss Japan a lot these days so I've been following many channels from Japan (both by Japanese and foreigners) and I just hit the sub button for yours as well but just noticed you are still brand new on the channel, am I right? Considering that, I think your video is quite good and impressive. You gave me an impression of having already hundreds of thousand subs but literally you are spanking new! LOL! Good on you. What I liked and enjoyed about this video was your genuine excitement and honest comments on what you felt and thought as you were walking through the streets in a foreign country. It is my home country so many things in the video is "normal" and is nothing out of ordinary stuff but it still also gave me the similar sense of excitement like you as I've been living outside Japan now for so long. It's nice to see the current Japan/Tokyo in details what's going on. What is also very interesting and a lot of times I thought it was funny, it made me chuckle with your honest and pure reactions/excitement and comments. It was nice to see your point of views with different details about certain things with Japanese people or some stuff (like signage or buildings...etc)because you are coming from the western world and I do understand the both sides now. There were so many times how much I wanted to be there inside of the camera to help you at certain points when you were struggling how to buy ramen or tickets for the ride to trains...etc. But you did quite well in the end and I'm glad many Japanese people tried to help you even though their English wasn't very good. It was a super enjoyable video watching the entire time and I could have watched even more. It took me back to the time when I was living in Tokyo (specifically in year 2005 when I was working in Tokyo for a year, going there from Vancouver, Canada but I ended up moving back to Canada afterwards as I couldn't take the stress working intensely in Japan all alone in a typical Japanese company....as you can imagine as a Japanese person! LOL!) It was also very nice to see you trying to respect the culture and people as much as you could. Oh and that reminded to tell you why perhaps many restaurants and businesses don't seem to appreciate cameras inside. This is my guess but I still believe there is some good reason to this, and what it is that recently there have been some terrible incidents by some foreign UA-camrs came to Japan and you probably heard about "Johnny Somali" guy from the US, and particularly he caused a lot of damage and upheaval to the UA-cam business or to particularly to other foreign UA-camrs in Japan because of his unbelievably terrible behaviours during his stay in Japan which left a very bad taste and impression on foreigners or foreign UA-camrs with many Japanese people so unfortunately. (If this is the first time to hear about the guy, you can check many videos and articles talking about him when you Google his name.) So I think it has to do with that guy and some other similar crazy stupid UA-camrs caused the harm forever. So I do thank you for showing a lot of respect and just being descent nice pleasant foreign tourist during your visit in Japan. When you buy a take out drink or food, you are not supposed to drink or eat inside the place. Its because the pricings for dine-in and taken-out is different, take out price is cheaper than dining in and so if eat in with take out price is basically cheating the system. The law was implemented a few years ago so I guess most people who come from outside Japan may not know it.
Next time, please keep it in your mind.

I'm Japanese and I understand you might be confused if you come to Japan from a country with a tipping culture.
most restaurant employees in Japan are forbidden by their work rules to receive additional money from customers (whether it is as a tip or not), so the two staff members in your video were just confused cause they couldn't explain it in English very well.
they weren't offended by your tipping, you know.
FYI, the male staff member at 1:11:00 is saying "we can't receive a tip. instead, so please donate to the shrine if you like.".
payment methods in Japan are a bit complicated, but for travelers who want to pay for public transport or small purchases with a smartphone, I strongly recommend setting up a SUICA App.
even so, there are still some stores that only accept cash, and it's really troublesome.
I'm a little surprised that you went to Nagayama, cause the ramen restaurant you went to is the kind of place that Japanese core ramen lovers prefer rather than travelers.
I like the oily soup of that ramen too, and it makes my stomach upset every time lol.

I always try to find the local spots like Nagayama, they're usually both better and cheaper than more well known ones and it feels like a much more authentic experience. I'll just make sure I have cash next time 😆

This is your first time in Japan, and I hope you have a great trip. There are so many things to see and do in Japan that it's hard to decide where to go. The trains in Tokyo are so crowded with people that it can be hard to get around.

Those little restaurants have been around for decades. Just recent years, they became tourist attractions. I think the owners still want to make sure locals who have been coming in the restaurants and bars feel comfortable without worrying about their privacy to be exposed. That may be a big reason why lots of places ask you not to film! Sorry if you felt rejected!!

We have to adapt to the culture including language where we visit.
Therefore, you should've used Japanese when talking to people. Even if your Japanese is not fluent, no one will care about.
Please do not take it for granted that people speak in English.

I think it's best to learn the rules of that country in advance. Language can come later.
Signs prohibiting photography are carefully posted in many shops.
There is always a sign prohibiting bringing coffee into the shrine.
If your field of view is so narrow that you miss everything, you should stop taking pictures.

Unbelievable that people still do vlogs and not know about the basics.
Little rules to go by that everyone planning to go to japan should know by now. And these common rules has been popularized more than 10 years ago.
1. Always bring cash. In some cases international bank cards will work but can take up time and hold up a line . Get their local cards like a Suica card
2. Stop talking inside any train,, resto, and capsule hotels unless you have adequate spacing that people will barely hear you. Much better if you dont talk at all. Most of them dont really care. But levels of annoyance can be observed if they keep looking at you. If they tell you to stop it means you are doing it too much.
3. Inside any establishments, ask permission if they allow you to record a video. That cook was already annoyed at you for talking too much then you have to shove your camera in his kitchen w/o asking permission in the first place.. Not every vlog should be about talking while recording a video. Record a video then do a voice over in your editing software. You are in Tokyo, chances are you probably are the 10000th person to brag that you have a youtube channel and you are recording their place.
4. If you are also lazy to learn basic japanese to communicate, download a voice translation app on your phone. Some japanese gets embarrassed when they dont understand you and you forcing them to understand your language can hold up their time. Not because they are polite it means it is ok. Translated phrases from the app like "I'm going to the Imperial Palace.' "What's the even't here" "I would like to dine in" would pace things up and cause lesser stress to the employees
5. DO NOT TIP
When I go to new places I treat the people and culture with my upmost respect and approach my experiences with an open mind. I do not wish research the country thoroughly before I go as that sucks the childlike wonder and enjoyment out of it.

@@oneyedthing Completely agree with everything you mentioned. If you are a guest in their country you must adapt. Only some basic research and knowledge and common sense is needed, it is not that hard really. There's enough ignorant western vloggers in Tokyo as it is.. it is embarrassing really.
I've seen tons of vlogs in Japan. You can clearly seen that he is very respectful and appreciative towards the whole culture. I would say that this style is much more interesting compared to music and voice over. The genuine live impressions and reactions are what makes this vlog great.

Looks like you had a wonderful visit in Japan. I am originally from Japan but have been living in the US for the last 30+ years. I go to Japan at least twice a year to visit my aging parents. You picked a great location to stay in Ueno. Ueno is one of the most convenient locations to stay. in Tokyo if you land in Narita Airport. You also managed to navigate yourself during the Tokyo Marathon. You did a great job on your first day!
The first ticket machine you used at Akihabara station is for Shinkansen only.
Lucky you, whenever i go to Tokyo, i have to face a 28+hrs journey. I live in rio de janeiro, for me is the farest place i can go.

interesting! I got a good idea of how tourists who come to Japan from abroad feel and spend their time there. I also realized that I need to study English more.
Watching you reminds me of my first time back in September. But I wasn't alone then. I came back a second time for 10 days in Feb-March and it was just if not even more awesome to be doing this solo. What a place. Enjoy!
PS: for the capsule, I don't know which one you went for, but I can't recommend Rembrandt Capsule in Shinjuku enough. It was cheap as well, but looked much bigger than what you got in Ueno. I stayed there for 8 nights. I'll do it again.
