You did not mention the fact that you are also paying for the iphone by paying some extra money every month as a part of the contract. The amount which you pay for the phone as a part of the contract is actually less than the amount which you would be paying to buy the phone. So overall you have a plan and a phone for 2 years and you get to keep the phone after the contract expires. In short, it is a good deal.
so you are essentially still paying money for your phone, its literally the same as using emi except you will either have to pay more or less depending on which carrier you go with. also you lose the phone you already have

Misleading information. Iphones can no longer be locked to a career. Once you buy a phone on contract, you can use any sim card in the phone. You will have to keep paying the monthly bill though.
