Hi Bob, I had to comment on this video... I have three pans sort of like this - a 6", a 7" and a 12 inch. They are not tin but rather light weight high carbon steel. This is what I suspect yours is... My 12' skillit belonged to my great grand mother from the mid to late 1800s. My grand mother used it for cornbread - a hillbilly stapel. lol My 7" I have had since the early 60's. It is my goto camping skillet. My 6" I picked up at a yard sale a long time ago. Once seasoned they are pretty much non stick. I season mine by cooking bacon in them and then use the drippings. And like cast iron turns black ny high caarbon pans turn brown inside.. Because they are used on hardwood fires - DO NOT USED PINE - they are black on the bottom but not sticky. They are light weight and travel well in a pack.
I have heard of tim frying pans but I was never allowed to use one. Granny said tin makes the food taste funny and will rust thru on you.
I have heard that you can find these carbon steel pans on ebay but I do not know for sure.
BTW my pans work fine on my electric stove here at home.
They are great pans if you can find them - way better than the new stainless steel pans out there.
QUESTION: What is that little gas stove you are using? I would love to get one like it.
    Later......... Blessings friend.........

It's a Coleman butane stove. I've seen them in the camping section at Walmart. About $20. They also sell the butane gas canisters for them. BTW, I have several high carbon steel pans, too. Including a couple of Cold Handle. Found mine at flea markets and such. Usually season them just like I season cast iron cookware. Have also seasoned them the same way that a carbon steel wok is seasoned. IMO, seasoning is best done outdoors using a gas grill. Keeps the smoke out of the house.

These stoves are found in most camping sections,a popular model these days.
      I saw them for 15 to 39$.
The canisters are around 1 to 4$,and last you 2 a 3 days.
Depending what you cook, hot drinks, eggs, dinner etc included.
Always have one in the car when I'm out with the family.
      3 persons use.

Hi Levi.. how can I tell.if mines carbon steel? I really want to know what the 40 means to. I know it's definitely not the size of the pan.
Oh I try not to use pine or any soft with in my fires. Not to mention the mess it makes on the bottom of the cookware also I don't like the smell Pine smoke in my food..
Thanks for the heads up on the electric grill.
I've decided to make a video on my small cook stove. Featuring the pros and cons. I think they'll be my next video since I'm not going out right now. We're having highs in the single digits and lows in the negative. Yep we're in the middle of a Arctic blast they say. Have an awesome day and I will talk to you later....

@@Bob808Knight Hi again.... I hope you are ready for our storm. :-) According to the radar you are getting it now. I should be here within a couple of hours. i have movies, a good book and hot choco... I am ready. lol
Hummmm, regarding your pan. I am guessing it is carbon steel from its looks. I guess you could test it for hardness. The carbon steel will be way harder. Also if it is clean you can solder tin, but not carbon steel. If you try to weld tin it will just melt, but you can weld carbon steel. As for the "40" it is probably some sort of model number indicating size... just guessing there. BTW... it does not hurt your pan to let it get a brown patina on it (if it is carbon steel). I never boil water in mine. I just put it on the fire upside down for a bit to stearlize ii and burn out residue. I have scrubbed mine with soap and water and even steel wool after my grand daughter burned up dinner. lol You just have to reseason it. lol BasicallyI treat it almost like cast iron.
A video on stoves is a good idea for the new guys to the woods. I currently have about a dozen differet stoves on my storage shelf. My favorite is my three fule hobo stove. Mostly it uses sticks/twigs but can accomendate a isbit cube or alochol burner. It is made from a 10oz coffee can. It will usually last a couple of years but it only take a few minuets to make a new one. I also have a nice alochol burner made from two potted meat cans - it is about 30 plus years old. lol
BTW: I found your cool stove on Amazon for about $30. It can use the same fule I have for other little stoves. Like I said I have a dozen or more stoves. lol But I usually just use a trench fire of camp fire for cooking.
      later.......... and blessings friend......

Hi Levi. We the beginnings of the storm right now. Highs in the single digits and lows in the negative. I've had some frozen pipes but I caught them in time. They've also started rolling blackouts yesterday. Luckily it hasn't hit us yet. That's supposed to last until the end of the week. I would say I'm definitely prepared. I've got the good old heater buddies to keep us warm. And backup batteries for everything else. If it gets real bad I'll just fire up the generator.
Thanks for the information about the frying pan.
If we don't lose power I'll do the video today. And hopefully get it edited before they shut it off.
I know what you mean about having too many stoves. One day I need to do a video on my collection.
I'm with you though I rather cook over a trench fire. I think the smell of wood makes the food taste better..

I have 5 of these pans in 4 sizes. The best oil for seasoning these (or cast) is flax seed oil, 2nd would be walnut, both are "drying" oils, and polymerize more easily. While it is true that heating ferrous metals does make them expand, and make the pores open, the pores are so small that you can't see them without a microscope, too small for oil to enter. What you are seeing is pitting that was hidden by old seasoning, then water. What happens when you season a pan is that you cook the oil until it becomes a sort of organic plastic, and that is what makes them nonstick. Tin is a misnomer too. Tin cans, and tin pans are tin plated carbon steel, and I would bet there is no tin left inside that pan. They are a beauty to use. 1 of mine, my dad had since he was in Cub Scouts...

And the other is a lodge stamped carbon steel pan, both are a lot lighter than taking my cast iron pans along! I have a similar pan but it's a lot newer (2-3 years old). Looks almost hand-made (maybe it is). Very thin carbon steel, a bit smaller than yours. Works great to fry up some ham and and eggs or a small steak over coals. I usually just heat up water then wipe it out with a paper towel to "clean," heat again to dry, wipe with thin coat of olive oil, heat a final time and put away. And "hope for the best," as Shug says.

    • @oldtimerlee8820
      @oldtimerlee8820 3 роки тому +1

You can use any food grade oil or grease to season a pan. I've used lard, Crisco (favorite) and various plant oils. The objective of seasoning is to coat the metal with a fat (oil) that has been carbonized (polymerized). When that happens during the high heat of seasoning, the fat will not turn rancid. Fat that has not been carbonized (either not hot enough or too thick a coating) will turn rancid over time.
