Oh man, that little dingbat is CUTE!
Nice presentation. To add to the patina you could finish the seasoning process by cooking a sliced onion until the onion burn black.
That is a sweet pan
good piece of kit, looked really good after the seasoning. Thanks and God bless
Thank you so much brother! I appreciate you taking the time to come along. I am really liking this as a solo skillet and I believe it will be a well used piece in my kit. Take care and God bless you brother!
Good video, brother. That looks like a very useful fry pan. Maybe you can do a demo video on it sometime. Thanks.
Thank you so much for the kind words brother! I will definitely show this one again in some upcoming campfire cooking videos. I appreciate you taking the time to tune in and your kind words!
Thanks for the tip on campfire seasoning of a skillet. Awesome video!
You are quite welcome Joe! I am glad you enjoyed it and I appreciate you taking the time to come along!
That's a cool little pan. Thanks for the tips.
Thank you for taking the time to tune in! I appreciate your kind words!
That is just what I need to do to my new cast iron skillet. Great job Matt.
This process will definitely serve that skillet well Vance. I use a similar process for all mine. Many time I do it at home in the oven out of convenience. I have used olive oil, lard, crisco, etc and all of it did an acceptable job. Thank you for taking the time to tune in. I appreciate the kind words.
Nice frying pan. It is hard to find stuff like that. Thank you for the video, Matt
Thank you so much brother! I got this one from thequartermastergeneral.com. I have really enjoyed it so far as it is a perfect little solo skillet to pack. Thank you for tuning in and commenting!
Very cool little skillet, should serve you well brother. I like that is has a folding handle.
Thank you brother. It fits in my pack really nice with the little canvas sack I made for it since the video. I believe it will be a well used piece in my kit. Thank you for taking the time to tune in brother.
Now lets see some cooking! Everybody loves the cooking vids.. Cool video.
WOW I was planing to buy the same skillet but I was doing some research first. Seen your video gave me the confident to buy it. Thanks Brother!!!
I just recently bought one of those but the next size bigger. I thought the same, it seemed to come shipped covered in some type of petroleum gun oil or something. I degreased it with Purple Power, and washed it out with hot water and Dawn soap. Boiled some water in it, seasoned it in my oven and then used it on the stove top for a month cooking bacon, sausage and French fries. It turned out great as far as I can see as it performs like a non-stick with eggs now. Great piece of gear as it is much lighter than cast iron, but has the cast iron feel to it when cooking while camping. I prefer it much more than what you may get from an aluminum boy scout mess kit fry pan for example. That fry pan companied with maybe a nice 1 quart cooking pot (stainless maybe) with a bail would be a nice set up for camping and hiking. Thank you for the video!! and Merry Christmas!
Nice one Matt. That's a neat skillet. God Bless
Thank you brother! I really like this skillet. I think it will be a well used piece. I appreciate you tuning in and your kind words!
I have been looking for a review of this pan, thank you for posting this
Good info, thanks for the video.
Very good Video. Greatings from Germany. Danny
Thank you so much for tuning in Danny! Blessings to you and yours in Germany! Thank you for your kind words as well. Take care.
Ya mine came the same way. I washed it and let it soak before I seasoned it.
I remember very little of those pans getting cured on fire for the first time.
I only remember covering it with salt. And perhaps some vinegar... To let it burn a little.
I have used salt and vinegar to clean cast iron pans and to strip them before re-seasoning them. I have done it on the stove at home more times than in a camp setting but it is always more fun to do it over a fire:) Thanks for tuning in!
I had one of those from my reflecting days. Just FYI lard is the best thing for curing a steel or cast iron skillet or pot.
I have also used lard on cast iron with good results. I usually use that when I do this at home in the oven. When in the field I usually carry a small bottle of olive oil out of convenience. I have also had good results with crisco.
Black Hat Bushcraft I have been told olive oil has to low a point. You may need a higher oil
I really don't know though as so have just used lard
With steel pans so usually don't worry just scrubbed them with a brass brillo pad
Thanks
Nice Skillet. Never seen that before.
Thank you so much for taking the time to tune in! I believe it will be a well used addition to my kit. I just subbed your channel. It looks like you have a great start there!
I looked up quartermaster general. Amazing site! Thank you!!!
They have some very uniques and harder to find vintage style items. It is definitely a good resource for certain items. Enjoy brother!
I know this comment is a little late, but crazy crow, sells a lot of re enactment type stuff. The stuff us outdoorsmen really like, including the same or similar skillet.
Can you share a link to your wool hoodie?
Nice vid. Where did you source the skillet?
I just bought an 11” carbon steel pan, so thanks for this great video! How many coats do you think is best before cooking in it?
I just ordered this same skillet from Quartermaster General, and I have to say I'm not very impressed.
It has 'India' stamped on the bottom, and it's made with about the same quality you would expect from a cheap knife from India.
There are jagged edges all over the thing which will need to be filed down, and despite arriving covered in foul-smelling oil, there were still quite a few rust spots which will need to be cleaned up.
The design of the handle leaves a lot to be desired, as it sits so low in the skillet. Anything more than a single egg cooked in it will get all inside of the hinge. It should have been riveted on closer to the rim of the skillet, but as it is the bottom of the hinge only sits about 3/4" from the bottom. Definitely carry an old toothbrush or something to clean out the space in the hinge, because it will get food caked inside of it.
The skillets available from Refiner's Forge, Townsends, Stabilotherm, and Turkey Foot Trading are designed much better, and would be worth the extra money.
What size is it. All I see on quartermaster general is 9".
🇺🇸👍🇺🇸👍🇺🇸👍
Thank you for sharing with us. What the name of where you got it from. You said the name a little to fast. Thank you Prov 27 : 17
This one came from thequartermastereneral.com They have several different sizes and the prices are reasonable in my mind. It seems to be very well made. Time will tell as I believe this will be a well used piece in my kit. Thank you so much for taking the time to tune in brother!
Matt, was the 6” or 9” ?
I believe it was the 6". The bottom of the pan is approximately 6" in diameter and gets larger toward the top. It's been a good one! Thanks for tuning in Chuck.
You should tell viewers the oil used. Not all olive oil can take high heat, and should not be used for cooking.
This was just a generic olive oil purchased from the cooking oil aisle at the grocery store. It is produced for cooking specifically.
