Where Did Maroon 5 Go Wrong?
When you think of the band Maroon 5, who is the first person that comes to your name? Is it drummer Matt Flynn? Is it guitarist James Valentine? Maybe it’s keyboardists PJ Morton and Jesse Carmichael. I got it, you’re thinking of Sam Farrar, bassist and percussionist. Oh, were you thinking of Adam Levine? Never heard of him.
Maroon 5 is an American pop-rock band, known for the classic songs such as “She Will Be Loved”, “Moves Like Jagger”, “Animals” and most recently “Memories”. Their albums “It Won’t Be Soon Before Long” and “V” hit number one on the Billboard 200 Albums charts.
Efforts such as “Hands All Over”, “Overexposed” and “Red Pill Blues” followed close at number two. Maroon 5 has become one of the best selling acts of all time, being recognized by Billboard on their Top Artists of the 2010s chart, placing at number nine.
While they’re a well recognized band with many accomplishments under their belt, their decline is pretty obvious, especially when looking into specific details about their performance. So this warrants the question, where did Maroon 5 go wrong?
While we’re unable to pinpoint one specific factor, we can take a look at various things that have contributed to the group's ascension but also led to their decline. As with anytime we look into subject matter such as this, a lot of it can be speculation and may not always be accurate.
But that aside, I think I’ve been able to find some key points that correlate to their slow tumble in quality, relevance and popularity. As we continue on, let me know where you think Maroon 5 went wrong - if you think they did at all. I’d love to hear your thoughts on the following claims.

The problem I have with Maroon 5 over the last 10 years is that pretty much all of their tracks could also pass for Adam Levine solo songs. Every now and then you hear a guitar, but the rest is just synth sounds and drum loops. You'd think the other band members weren't even in the studio when the tracks were produced. I'd much rather listen to "This Love" and "Makes Me Wonder". And I hate to say it, but Coldplay isn't much different these days. They started out as a band with an organic sound and are overdoing it with more and more backing tracks. I mean, come on, the band that once wrote awesome tracks like "Clocks" and "In My Place" is now collaborating with BTS and Selena Gomez 🤔. I don't mind bands being experimental and taking unfamiliar paths, but this is too mainstream for me. It's quite a joke that they were nominated in the Rock/Alternative category at the BRITS a few days ago. Coldplay is not rock anymore and neither is Maroon 5.
I agree with you, tho, in my opinion, Coldplay's collab with Selena is actually quite good and it is definitely a bit more in line with their earlier material.

@@slystone4892 And I hate the fact that barely anyone listened Everyday Life. Everyday Life was Coldplay not only stepping out, but straying further away from their comfort zone. It's their most ambitious album since VLV. Arabesque will still be the only song that will give me goosebumps everytime I listen to it.
Post-2010 Maroon 5 is so different from what they were during their first three albums that if it weren't for Adam's polarizing mosquito tenor, you'd be forgiven to think they're two different bands. So much so that when you look up "sell-out" in the dictionary, it might as well would say, "see Maroon 5".

Post-2010 Maroon 5 is essentially Adam Levine's veiled solo career.

Their music just became so incredibly uninspired. And bad uninspired. Forgettable songs that were largely way overplayed and beaten into your mind. Familiar like an annoying tv add is familiar. Also, every band member seems underutilized, including Levine. First two or three albums really showcased his range and rich vocals. After that, he always sounded incredibly whiny to me. Like, take it down several octaves.
I agree with his voice on that. There's times where it seems over processed in the studio or almost strikingly un-human. It can be very unenjoyable like that.

Their first 3 albums are truly some of the best pop/rock albums I've ever heard, everything after those was a decline but honestly those three records are what I talk about when I say i love Maroon 5
it sort of reminds me of pre-movie Spongebob the first 3 seasons were fantastic, classic episodes like Help Wanted, Band Geeks and Idiot Box.
Maroon 5's 4th album and Season 4 of SB is a mixed bag of good and bad and so on and so for in the coming releases of the band and the hit Nicktoon.
I was a fan of this band until I heard Payphone. That was the turning point for me. It didn't feel like the band I loved.
I totally agree with the "Adam Levine" show and how it affects the band.
I'm from Chile and their performance on Festival de Viña was a huuuuge mess, till this day chileans post mean things on their instagram.

There was some info that the people from the event lied to him about it being a concert but instead was a TV show/being aired in the radio… they did sound tired and unmotivated in stage YES but apparently there was also some mishandling and the band was kinda tricked into playing which sucks… and it’s una verguenza que la gente chilena siga agrediendo a adam levine online

I feel like James Valentine is/used to be maroon 5’s secret weapon. With his background in jazz, he was able to bring “that chordal sound” M5 is known for on the first 2 albums. I hardly know if he’s involved now cause you barely hear any guitar anymore.
I felt "V" was a solo Adam Levine album.
Maroon 5 went down hill when Adam Levine started getting ink done.
Stop bc I thought the same thing 💀 I won't lie, but "V" was my JAM when it came out. It was probably the first music by male musicians I actively got into and when I tell you I thought it was amazing...granted I didn't know how most of their other albums sounded. I can still bop to it and enjoy it but...yes, very much the Adam Levine show.

Completely agree -- Maroon 5's career really is so strange, and I feel like it rode the wave of an unchanging adult contemporary radio landscape until it couldn't anymore and then never really found its footing again. Their most culturally ubiquitous years were pretty concretely 2011-2015 between Moves Like Jagger and Sugar, and even in that 4/5 year period, a LOT of their songs essentially fell into 2 camps -- the milquetoast, adult contemporary ones (Payphone, Daylight, Love Somebody, Maps) and the pseudo-angry, Imagine Dragons-esque ones (One More Night, Animals, This Summer) -- and that was it. No one expected their new music to sound fresh but no one expected it to flop either since the soft-pop rock vibe was the presiding adult contemporary sound from 2010-2015 (a la Train Hey Soul Sister in 2010, Gavin Degraw Not Over You in 2011, Pink Just Give Me a Reason in 2013, Rachel Platten Fight Song in 2015, etc.). By 2016-2018, the adult contemporary audience seemed to be catching up with the mainstream preferences in ways that reflected more trop-pop, dance-drop sounds that didn't match Maroon 5's tried and true formula (songs like Shape of You, Something Just Like This, and The Middle). I think that's why 2016-2018 Maroon 5 in particular was so jarring, disjointed and vapid-sounding because they were so obviously trying to adjust their sound to the zeitgeist. Don't Wanna Know, Cold, and What Lovers Do are fine for what they are and charted well, but they're ultimately pretty forgettable and feel more like unintentional deluxe collabs from Charlie Puth's Voicenotes album than anything with their own identity. And with disco dance-pop taking over in 2020-2021 with songs like Blinding Lights and Levitating dominating, JORDI ended up being an album that seems to be grasping for straws at random years of sonic trends without succeeding at any of them (Lost and Lovesick sound very 2012, Lifestyle sounds very 2014, Echo sounds very 2018/2019, and Seasons sounds very 2020 Justin Bieber Changes album).

I got into MAROON 5 after Harder To Breathe debuted on the radio. I was shocked at just how amazing their live sound was. It was incredible.
I love how Adam constantly shits on female artists about their art when he's been producing the same copy paste content for the last 20 years. 🤣
I'm surprised Maroon 5 managed to last for so long. Also, I'd love to see a video one day explaining what happened to Nelly Furtado's career (She dropped an album in 2013 and dipped! 😂😭)
Honestly, their last album isn’t bad either. I think old fans are just used to their old stuff.
She waited too long to cash in on the success of Loose (also, she became very reclusive and disliking of fame)
Levine going falsetto on all their major hits is BEYOND cringe to me. If you can pull off falsetto, great. If not, it's like nails on a chalkboard. I've heard him described as "a frog choking on a harmonica" and "a clarinet that learned to talk." The fact that he's a gigantic douche off-stage doesn't help.
For me, I was never massively attached to Maroon 5, but they continue to sink lower. I don't call them the Adam Levine Show, I call them Adam Levine and the Men He Holds Hostage...lol
Nelly was forced to adopt a sexy image for Loose in the mid 2000s to sell records. She was uncomfortable yet at the same time legendary doing it.

Adam’s behavior on The Voice ended Maroon 5. When he threw his candidate under the bus, so to speak, he received a lot of backlash which affected the whole band in a downward popularity.

You made some really good points here. I've loved Maroon 5's music from the very beginning and "It Won't Be Soon Before Long" is my favorite album by them. But throughout the years their music has become so bland, generic and soulless that they totally lost their appeal to me.
Their latest album that I listened all the way through was "V" (which is mediocre, but still enjoyable). "Red Pill Blues" and "Jordi" are just... No. They need to stop using that same pop formula and desperately trying to make radio-friendly hits.
"V" is very run of the mill, but it's got bops on it! I used to be obsessed with "In Your Pocket" 💀 I don't know how an artist can undo so much of what they've done. When you stick to such a precise formula, you really have to undo _everything_ to find a genuine creative route again.

I think they started by being famous with everyone, young people, etc. Whereas now, I'd argue that Coldplay is a proper "mum band". Like the modern day Take That. And that fan base buy tickets like hotcakes
@@notyou666 Maroon5 has no fandom, they are like releasing radio hits every year and that's it. Coldplay has loyal fans. The biggest fans are mostly from South America, Eastern Europe and Asia.

Kendrick Lamar did a great job building a big fanbase in the beginning; still drop massively successful album without sacrifice them + release album after 2 years like that and still doesn't flop

I used to like them pre-The Adam Levine Show era. He seemed so likable and authentic when they started. He really leaned into that “I’m a rockstar” persona which is ironic because their music in their later eras is more pop than rock.
V was the last album from them worth listening

Usually prefer their earlier music (circa 2004-2012) but the songs they've released in recent years were bops. They're not a proper band anymore, mostly just Adam Levine. But I happen to like their new songs even, that's the thing with music, you like what you like.

The Super Bowl performance did it. The black life matter movement, Rihanna refusing to perform because of the colin’s kneeling protest. They would have been just fine if they refused to play at the halftime show
I just wish they would make an album similar to the sound they had with Songs About Jane and It Won’t Be Soon Before Long. That sound is what made them unique. A few days ago I was listening to these two albums and the music still holds up. The crazy part Songs About Jane is 20 years old now.
I even like Soap Disco when they were Kara’s Flowers.
Other than Adam Levine, my other two favorite members of the band is Jesse Carmichael and James Valentine.

I think you covered this really nicely. From V onward, their music really just rubbed me the wrong way like I could hear how much they were just trying to chase trends. Especially when they started having a ton of features like Nicki Minaj, Cardi B, and Megan Thee Stallion.
I saw them live at a corporate tradeshow gig in Vegas 10 years ago and they turned up the rock elements for the mostly male audience. It helped.
Oh I watched his tantrum in el festival de Viña del Mar on live tv it was terrible lol people got even madder when he said that they will do a real concert later (they had a solo show a few days after the festival)
if you go to his Instagram you can still see angry Chileans comments there, they call him "el mañas" (the tantrum man?? It's like the closest translation)
I think maybe the biggest problem is is that they lack a big fanbase now. They have casual listeners but not a completely devoted fanbase and that can be a problem if you want to evolve as an artist or change your style because casual listeners will not follow you into that.
Maroon 5 is what got me into music and I've grown up with it, but I can definitely, as painful as it is to admit, Jordi was their downfall and red pill blues. It feels like they're just following the crowd, but what made them stick out was how they were unique and quirky. I really wish they could go back to what people came to them for in the first place, and if they don't they will completely leave the spotlight which is already growing so dim. Rock has never died, and he needs to realize it and come back to it.
I do kinda agree with what he said about rock music though. The groups who responded and publicly disagreed with him like Paramore and panic at the disco are already established groups. They've reached a point where anything they release will chart fairly well so lavigne'a comments doesn't really apply to groups Like that.
Realistically rock music as a whole has been on a massive decline commercially for almost a decade now. It's incredibly rare to see a new rock group reach mainstream success nowadays. (which as a massive alternative /punk rock fan sucks but it's the truth.)
Not saying rock isn't charting but again it's typically only already established artists and even if you really look at the rock groups that are charting well they're selling a fraction of what they used to, but the exact opposite can be said about rappers . It seems like everyday some random rapper most people have never heard of somehow ends of in the UA-cam trending page and eventually in the top 40 on the billboard top 100.
Hip hop really is the dominant genre of mainstream music right now.

@@nah....6151 I definitely after with you when you mentioned how we currently have an entire generation of people who don't like rock because they it's mostly Coldplay and maroon 5, but I still don't think maroon 5 had anything to do with the decline of rock.
M5 didn't really start making bad pop music until moves like jagger came out in 2011. Prior to that they were making at least somewhat rock influenced songs. But even then rock was still declining.
If you look at the Billboard's 2010 Year-End Hot 100 charts. The only alternative rock song that made the chart was Paramore's the only exception. 2009 was the last year that had multiple rock songs make the chart.
Hip hop, along with R&B, has been the most dominant genre for nearly 3 decades now.

If they stayed true to their original sound they would have lasted about 3 albums. They chose to evolve albeit sell out and thus have had two decades of success. For
The majority every artist or band has a shelf life. They have seriously surpassed that so I say well done to them for remaining successful for 20 years. Their competitors in 2002 are gone. They aren’t.
You can survive as a band without losing your soul. See RHCP or Arctic Monkeys.
Although I guess it's worse for pop bands. Rock listeners tend to be more loyal.

For me Maroon 5 were pretty much one of the best bands of the 2000's, an accolade they can share with the likes of Linkin Park, Muse, The Strokes, Coldplay, The Killers, Green Day, Paramore and Arctic Monkeys amongst others. Songs About Jane was a masterpiece and It Won't Be Soon Before Long was a fantastic album. They both had their own unique sound and there was a lot to like about that. Maroon 5 came out a time where genres like pop-punk, nu metal and post grunge were very popular and they needed to stand out from the crowd which they did. Their music was still rock, but it had more of a funkier and soulful vibe to it and in doing so it was very radio friendly. Anyone could pretty much listen to it, it wasn't as harsh/melancholic as the other rock sub genres.
Maroon 5 declined from the 2010's imo, the moment when they started getting other people to produce their music and when they focused on collaborations as opposed to making more band music, that's why these days you hear people say Adam Levine and his friends because going by the music videos that's what you see of Maroon 5 these days, Adam is always the centre of attention, he was before even back in the 2000's but it wasn't as in your face as it has become recently. Then of course switching his music styles and selling out, that's the biggest change of Maroon 5 from the 2000's-2010's. They went from a pop/funk rock sound to a more pop/r&b sound in the 2010's. I'd say I'm speaking on behalf of most people that Maroon 5 sounded way better when they were rooted in rock, they had their own unique guitar riffs(This Love, Makes Me Wonder, Harder To Breathe all had great guitar riffs) and musical structure. When they moved to the more pop/r&b sound, those unique guitar riffs that made the band sound so great were pretty much gone and they opted for studio produced sounds- they became commercial. Their change of sound was so drastic that you could even argue that that the Maroon 5 of the 2000's and the Maroon 5 of the 2010's are two completely different bands. Levine's voice these days are a lot more exaggerated as it was before and the lyrics aren't as good anymore.
Ultimately, I'm kind of disappointed but not surprised with the change of Maroon 5, I mean at the end of the day music is all about being popular and staying relevant and that's simply what Maroon 5 have been doing. Like I'm sure that their fans from back in the 2000's who listened to them when they first started out, are not that keen with their new stuff I myself can speak on that experience. They've just been keeping with the times with all the current music trends out there, ironically when they started they were different to many of the other rock bands at the time and now they just sound like any other pop act.
Maroon 5 of the 2010s could only be called a band in the loosest sense of the term, as they were more like Adam Levine's solo act than anything like a band.
What would happen if Adam left the group to pursue a solo career?
That is a really interesting thought... 👀 I mean I can't speak on the involvement of the other members of M5 but since Adam seems to run a lot of the show and M5 is utilizing so many outside resources for songwriting and producing, I am SURE he could stand on his own two feet...for an album or two.
He is Maroon 5. He's done plenty of solo stuff but it just wasn't that successful.
I feel like what happend to Nicole Scherzinger going solo from the Pussycat Dolls would happen to Adam. The niche of the band/group is what's holds them together as artist. When Nicole made many attempts going solo she flopped because we were used to the girls behind her even though she carried the group.
The moment they started working with Max Martin, Benny Blanco, Savan Kotecha, they became One Direction. I mean, I adore One Direction but it’s not what I expected from a band that was apparently influenced by artists like Hall and Oates
I even heard Jennifer Lopez and Shakira received complains about them wearing too much sexy clothes, that would have left too much skin naked (where? Lmao), while I never heard a word against Adam. I had tickets for the Hands All Over tour because I was a big fan of the first two albums. The gig I was going to was canceled (or moved to an at the time unknown date) because Adam Levine took the job in The Voice, and at that point I knew he had sold out. I've liked some songs afterwards but it's like I keep them at a distance now.
I think that Maroon 5's musical evolution is something that a lot of music artists do to maintain their relevancy and a typical music artist maintains relevancy for about 10 years before falling off (some can't even maintain a 5-year career). Their debut single came out in 2002. How many acts are still getting top 20 hits 20 years into their careers?
Are they declining? Yes.
Were they bound to decline eventually? Obviously.
Ageism plays a huge part in that and once you've been in the game for 20 years, interests change and the new generation usually loses interest.
So I think instead of being surprised about their decline, we should be impressed with the fact that they've been able to produce hits for as long as they have.

I think it's because A) pop-rock bands "aren't cool anymore" B)Radio/Labels decided Rap/hip-hop is now the shit and C) in the era of streaming most people don't buy albums anymore, even digitals.
And yes definitely bundles was what made the albums sell in the past few years so BB banning them hurt a lot of artists
Both Tyler and Josh of top are insanely talented, but I was disappointed with their last record. I feel like both of them are running of concepts, ideas and themes in their albums.
Adam is a Very selfish man he always has to be the center of attention. They need to go back to the style of their first album and let everyone contribute!

I think in terms of how today’s Pop/Rock music sounds “V” captured that. For me when it comes to bands I like it when they can play the songs off the album live without that much backing tracks or samples and on that album it was great mix of that and live instruments. I wish they kept up with that sound sonically between “V” and “Overexposed”. Also Overexposed is the last album that some of the bands members had writing credits on so they also need to get on that as well.

Those two were their last decent albums. But they sound like Adam Levine rather than Maroon 5.
Hands All Over was great, it just seemed like more of the same ol’ same ol’ to the masses, I guess? Then Moves Like Jagger dropped, and they focused solely on being whatever that was. I still enjoyed a lot of their music after that, including Overexposed, and some of V. But, now, they are unrecognizable from the band I fell in love with. They need to go back to their roots for the next album for sure.
Maroon 5 should be remembered of at least 3 persons : Adam, James Valentine n Jesse Carmichael
Their singles for the last decade has just sounded the same to me. It’s like the same song rewritten over and over and over and over. I think people finally started to catch on. I’m probably over simplifying it, but that’s my general vibe from them. They don’t really sound like a “band” to me, more so a “product” than anything else.

I would say Hands all over is still a classic, and I enjoy listening to it from top to bottom. Overexposed and V are doing great in pop culture and my guilty pleasures, still love them at the time. This Summer may signify their beginning to be lost in the m5 identity. (saw them for the first time live in a concert, umm that was meh, kinda a let down and disappointed even I got the first row ticket - 2014/15)
For RPB and JORDI (I did not even checked the album still) to me is like a complete different phrase and work that's done by other artists. I don't see m5 in the albums and the image of the band is just getting ... more weird?!)

For starters, I'm a huge maroon 5 fan, but... I have noticed as well that the band themselves slowly got pushed away. There was a time when all band members contributed. They sang background vocals, played their instruments etc....
Now like u said , it's the Adam Levine show, he dies lead vocals, background vocals, the songs sound like they don't even need most of the members.
I find it hard to believe there isn't any disagreeing in the studio.

Honestly, I kind of have a soft spot for the singles of the "Overexposed" and "V" eras. And I think those two eras were both remarkably successful for them because even though they did feel like commercial crash-grabs given how they were each frontloaded by the singles and each had their share of filler (though in fairness "Beautiful Goodbye", "The Man Who Never Liked" and "It Was Always You" were respectable album tracks)...............Levine and his co-writers excelled at writing sticky, infectious hooks and vocal melodies during that time as well.
I consider "Red Pill Blues" to be where the group started to really decline in earnest. And the weird thing is that.................when you really listen to the album front and back.................there are a decent number of tracks that actually sound quite reminiscent of "Songs About Jane" albeit with additional electronic polish (namely "Whiskey", "Best 4 U" and the bonus track "Denim Jacket". The problem is that even the album's singles were devoid of the infectious hooks and melodies that made them a guilty pleasure for many................and without them, it overexposed (Ha!) the group as quite faceless and shallow: a problem that only became further magnified on "JORDI": which is almost bereft of any catchy hooks or melodies altogether but, even worse, had mixing that sounded demo-y and unfinished at numerous points. For example: objectively "Convince Me Otherwise" is objectively one of the few best tracks on the record, but even that isn't spared by how badly mixed and underwritten it is: saved only by H.E.R. genuinely emotionally committed to her vocal performance but even that not hiding how repetitive and aimless the song is.
But another thing I would be remiss not to point out about Maroon 5 is..........................Adam Levine is just simply a one trick pony thematically. Literally throughout their entire discography, two archetypes stick out: 1) Adam the "bad boy" douchebag whose idea of temporarily setting relationship disputes aside is manic makeup sex which he brags about a LOT, and 2) Adam the starry-eyed sadboi lamenting the dissolution of a relationship and hemorrhaging his heart on his sleeve Ed Sheeran-style. I think the fact their catalog was replete with catchy radio-friendly hits for so long effectively disguised that for a remarkably long time...............but once "JORDI" came along and many listened to "Beautiful Mistakes" and realized it's basically the exact same song and dance a la "This Love" and "One More Night" with a slightly different wrapping paper over it.......................people got beyond bored with this same song and dance and have moved on for good. Truthfully, the signs were ALWAYS there that Levine has ALWAYS had very little to say: really just bragging about sex in his relationships, touting angry makeup sex as his way of temporarily resolving fights in relationships, and going all tear-in-his-beer over the one that got away. And maybe a rare, vague nod to world peace or something on their latest album. Even Ed Sheehan is starting to lose favor commercially with his over-reliance on sappy acoustic ballads as indicated by a remix of "Joker & The Queen" featuring Taylor Swift barely registering a blip and already declining the single charts, so it's not hard to see why Maroon 5 are facing a similar fate now.

I've loved their evolutionary sound honestly, I love good bass and Adam's voice 😌
I think what's really frustrating and sad about this band is that they are genuinely "talented", they just keep positioning their inauthentic selves to the medium. M5 both explicitly stated that their kind of music was meant to chase trends, but the big difference is that they were on constant pressure, both personally and professionally, and that influenced their songs. The Fourth World's final track "Captain Splendid" was created during Jesse Carmichael's parents divorce, "Harder to Breathe" is a middle finger to their record label who wanted them to make more songs than they already needed to, and the entirety of "Songs About Jane" was Adam Levine venting out his frustrations, desires, and love for her ex-girlfriend, Jane Herman. Plus when SAG initially released, they never released any singles of any kind, just after a month. They were kind of hanging by a thread at that time (plus it was their second chance), and it would only take them a year-and-a-half to be finally recognized. But it also showed a core problem in their composing, and in the music industry in general. They were too successful that there was no stricter creative input or limitations to their future work. It's the same problem I have with Christopher Nolan and his most recent films. His early work were all dialogue-driven, adult thrillers (Memento/Insomnia/The Prestige) made with fierce creativity over what they had on the table. Until he made Tenet with a whopping $150 million budget and going all-out with no substance in-between, alienating the audience over what the fuck is going on.
Pressure creates diamonds. You have to make it to break it. And that's no longer the case fore M5. They already have the connections, clout, money, etc, leaving their work on a listless pedestal, generic. And it sad because, they are really genuinely "talented", but they just had too much power with their own success that they no longer recognized what made them special in the first place. It's like being born poor and later becoming a billionaire leaving your parents and relatives in the dump. And we are those parents. They are now posing a mask to hide everything they feel embarrassed of, like the Kara's Flowers era.
They can still make good music, they just need to go back to their roots, restrain themselves, and giving them a reality check. Don't be like Coldplay where they really sold-out for the mainstream. Be like Radiohead where they make and experiment music on their own terms and gaining a strong following over time, both critically and commercially. It's up to them whether they would like to or not. But who am I kidding, Adam is just shilling some money from lonely housewives amirite?
The last album I paid attention to was V. I don't know what album this song was, but first time thought wtf are they doing was with video where they're all dressed in furby costumes. I was pretty much done then

I don't think they necessarily 'went wrong'. They morphed into a shameless pop act, made lots of money and turned 40. Now they should either go back to their roots and make music for pleasure/their fans, or just stop, because they've passed their sell-by date as a pop act.

I’m not even a huge Maroon 5 fan, but regardless of personal opinion about their music, they haven’t “gone wrong” at all in terms of their ability to make hits. The fact that this band has sent songs into the Top 5 and Top 10 consistently for almost 20 years is nothing short of stunning. Girls Like You was just released a few years ago and was the #5 song of the decade and is the #30 song of all time. I can’t think of another band with comparably enduring success in the last two generations, frankly. Not even U2, Aerosmith, No Doubt or Coldplay has had anything approaching the kind of success Maroon 5 has had, single-wise.
Never cared for their music, however I have noticed the change in direction regarding their material. Adam really comes across as an egomaniac, especially since “The Voice”.
One good thing I will say about M5 is back when the first album was creeping up the charts, the band did send a very gracious thank you letter to the record store I worked at for helping with its success.

In my opinion, "Moves Like Jagger" is the last Maroon 5 song I remember having any edge, and "Sugar" is the last one I remember being any good. They've gone really hard in the direction of what the humorist Dave Barry calls "weenie music," which is to say, music of the limp, inoffensive, easy-listening variety that aging male stars sometimes transition into when they feel they're getting too old for the hard-edged rock star act.

@@miakaelvira9556 Definitely noticed a shift there. They didn't have _that_ song until "MLJ" was released. I think that success motivated them initially but it really ended up becoming a thing to continually chase until it lead up to now.

I used to be a big fan of Maroon 5, I grew up with Songs about Jane and loved Hands all over. But completely lost interest around Moves Like Jagger/Overexposed cause they just sounded plain and just following trendy songs. I think their success during Overexposed/V era is quite forgettable vs what they had in the 2000s. Overall Songs about Jane remains their most classic and timeless album.
Honestly, to me, this band has been dead since their album Overexposed in 2012. Listening to the track by track commentary they did for Spotify, the way they talk about the songs and how they came to be seemed so uninspired and completely souless like they were just making filler songs to put in the album along with the singles. Plus the rest of the band is not credited as songwriters in most of the songs after that album. They literally live off hit songs from the past and occasional new quick forgettable hit songs. For them I guess that must be an ok situation cause they have a lot of those and are set for life with concerts and so on, but there is nothing barely interesting anymore and I think they are actually more of a cover band of themselves.
I can see it, Jordi will be a future episode of Train Wreckords (where are my fellow Todd in the Shadows watchers?)

Overexposed was their first true sellout album to me because it was the first to feature outside co-writers (I don't count the rerelease of Hands All Over that just has "Moves Like Jagger") but I actually still liked it for what it was. After that, they switched to the much bigger label Interscope and that's when they really fell off for me (with a few songs here and there I still liked.) But man, each album manages to be worse than the last.
I don't necessarily need them to be pigeonholed into one genre, but I want to hear the rest of the band (PJ Morton makes fantastic solo music and is way underutilized in the band.) I want the band writing their own material again. But also, Adam Levine sings differently now than he used to. Even on Overexposed and a majority of V, he sung he still cared about what he was doing, but on RPB and Jordi he sounds so cold and detached (even if you took away all the vocal processing) like he would rather be doing anything else.
I think Overexposed to V was decent, but now they are not what they used to be.
I think they’re happy with their career, they made it clear success was their goal.
PJ Morton and James Valentine are awesome. I've always been a fan of the band.
I would say the only "decline" is that they have lost a little bit of what made them more original.

OMG didn't know about the feud between Adam and Xtina... Only watched The Voice from the short clips on UA-cam and thought they were jabbing for chemistry or drama for the show... no wonder Xtina couldn't take it anymore and quit (with call the show or the workplace toxic)
Now I feel so bad with her, since she's the reason leading to M5 pop appeal and influence in the pop market.
I haven't heard much from their first albums, but when I started to get into pop music, Maroon 5 was one of my favourite performers together with artists like Bruno Mars, Katy Perry, Rihanna and Lady Gaga. Songs like "Misery", "Moves Like Jagger", "Payphone", "Love Somebody", "Maps", and "Animals" were one of my favourites at the time. However, what they have become nowadays is so...off. Idk, their sound has become boring, emotionless. "Girls like you" and "Memories" represents one of the lowest points on recent pop music, I can't with it.
I hope they find a new sound, a more authentic sound. Years have gone since I liked one of their songs, but I wish them the best still, that one day they could surprise us all again
I would like to push back a little on your assertion that "Songs about Jane" was a sleeper hit and the follow up album was better. It is true that "Songs about Jane" was a sleeper hit in the sense that it took about two years to catch on. However I think that is the reality of most groups or people starting out. Jodeci's first album took the same amount of time. I think it has something to do with new groups + exposure. However when "Songs About Jane" finally caught on it blew up like a nuke. I think it was in part due to exposure from a movie (I can't remember which, I think it was love actually) that featured "Sunday morning" that helped. It's undeniable that when that album blew it rocketed with other bands/groups like match box 20 singing their praises, sometimes literally. Once that album blew up Maroon 5 was everywhere. I even have a recording of Rob Thomas of Matchbox 20 singing harder to breath with the band. I suppose it's subjective but in terms of the better Album I would say "Songs About Jane" is far superior to "It Won't Be Soon Before Long." I do have that Album and enjoy it very much but I think the first is far better.
Prince once wrote "Aspire to be hungry than fat." What he meant was that when your starving, you're hungry, you strive for more, you strive to be better or the best. When you're fat you don't so hard and you rest on your laurels. With regards to music or art in general it is meant that the starving artist puts out their best because their are hungry for recognition. Maroon 5 is definitely fat
They didn't. Adam wanted to go solo and that was a wrap. Same thing with Gwen Stefani with No Doubt or Fergi with the Black Eyed Peas.
I think Adam Levine letting his hot guy personality get to his head is what turned me off from them
I was and still am an original M5 fan. But definitely Red Pill Blues was where the quality dropped. After I listened to Jordi a few times, I just couldn’t bring myself to buy it. Hopefully their next album features their music , and less collaborations.
