How to Paint Over Spray Paint Graffiti | Ask This Old House

A homeowner called the Ask This Old House team for unique help. After her son decided to go from being an artist to majoring in agriculture, his old graffiti-style artwork covering her garage walls needed to go. Paint expert Mauro Henrique knows how to handle the job, and helps walk the homeowner through the process of cleaning up her garage walls and ceilings.
Where to find it?
Mauro begins prepping the space by vacuuming [homedepot.sjv.io/XY9baG] and wiping the walls to ensure they’re clean and free of dust. Next, he protects the floors by laying out a drop cloth [homedepot.sjv.io/R5dBrX]. He also uses painter’s pre-taped masking film [homedepot.sjv.io/xk6WKx] to tape [homedepot.sjv.io/MmdJqM] off the shelves on the walls.
Mauro and the homeowner apply an oil-based primer [homedepot.sjv.io/OrZQPr] to the walls using 3/4” nap fabric rollers [homedepot.sjv.io/rQNZPD] and extension poles [homedepot.sjv.io/5g06N1] to account for the tall ceilings. For the paint, Mauro uses an acrylic flat white paint [homedepot.sjv.io/XY9be3].

An airless sprayer would have done the job faster and there are special primers for stuff like grafitti one is shelack based works great but stinks and is like $150 for 5 gallons . with an airless sprayer it goes on better then a roller . dont use acid on brick not unless you want to ruin your brick to remove the art from brick contact a local grafitti removal company you can ask them what they recommend to remove said art from brick and dont even consider sandblasting it will damage the brick .

So what is the product for getting graffiti off brick that he mentioned at the end?

I would guess it is some form of etching for brick and concrete, as it would remove a very thin layer of the brick along with the paint on top.

It's krylon spray paint I don't think there's a whole lot of doubt that it was oil-based

Now if we could only cover the nasty graffiti along roads and highways. Those filthy scoundrels who love to deface others people's property with their silly scribbling already know how ugly it all is. If the misguided 'artists' thought it was 'art' they would cover their own house with it or tattoo the same scribbling on their own foreheads.
