Toss Your Tomato Cages & Do This Instead

Tomato cages are probably the most popular way of growing tomatoes, but it's generally one of the worst. Here's another method you can try out.
I'm standing under a cattle panel arched over. This creates a beautiful trellis that is going to be covered in tomato plants in no time.
Plant your tomatoes near the base of the cattle panel. When the plant is thin and flexible, you can weave it in and out of the grid. You can also use plant clips for extra support.

-Some work involved
-Larger upfront cost
-Still best for indeterminate varieties - Навчання та стиль
Been doing this for years. Save your back. Great idea
Came for the tomatoes stayed for the yoga pants
Wonderful n awesome! I miss my garden 😐
THANK YOU !! I'VE SEEN THIS IN GARDEN BOOKS BUT THEY DON'T MENTION WHAT TOO USE TOO HOLD THE PANELS UP !! I USED WOOD STAKES BUT A DISASTER AND NOW I KNOW !! AND I'VE CONTACTED 8 OTHER PEOPLE WITH THE STAKE PROBLEM AND NOW WE KNOW !! THANK YOU 😊
No, wood stakes are used to kill vampires, T-posts to hold cattle panels!
That's cool! I have never seen a tomato tunnel like that!
At one period of my life, we had a half acre garden and I canned a1000 quarts aeyear. We had a little local cannery, government subsidized with folks who helped carry, wash and sterilize jars, clean, prep and pack jars. We could pressure cook 60 quarts at a time . Cost?? 5 cents a pint,10 cents a quart. Sometimes I'd go home with 60 quarts of food
Wow! That sounds like a lot of work but really amazing too!
I do this for beans and peas. I also use the panels sideways for partial climbers. I like the single string method for tomatoes though. Its easy and I can get in to prune easier.
Had acre organic garden when I was young. Made the bower out of sticks. You could walk threw it and puck the veggies. Did it with all types if beans too LOL.
Yep. We cut some small trees and pruned branches from bigger trees. Picking through the cuttings we grabbed anything straight or almost straight to use as a stake or trellis. Also use cattle panels tied to t-posts. It's the best way to grow vining plants.
Can you please show how it was installed. I'd love to do this next year
You wack in some tposts bend the cattle panel inside them and attach the cattle panel to the tpost. Some people use wire , some zip ties there are also tpost connectors. I like to use rolled up wire I think I ended up with electric fence wire but there are all kinds. If you need a video there are tons out there just search cattle panel trellis!
Yes this is exactly what we did!
@TruthSeeking Endless This is just resting on the ground
Love. Tat.
I’m really enjoying your videos with such great ideas
Awesome! This is EXACTLY the idea that I had in mind, thank you! :)
Love it! Thank you.
Can you do a video on growing grapes from seed in zone 9B? THX
I do have some grapes in my yard, but it's not my expertise and we don't sell seeds on our site at this time
You'd likely have better luck from cuttings I would think.
Will be doing this. Thanks
Please let us see it when the tomatoes get to the top l would love to see it !
Will do! I'm publishing a follow up video this week :)
@@SanDiegoSeedCompany thank you! I'm excited 😆
@@deb61willy just published a new short showing the Tomahook in action!
Your awesome lady!
I've seen that done with gourds. It is beautiful when full & heavy with fruit.
My tomatoes were so ravaged by my chickens breaking out of their run and sprinting straight to my tomatoes. I'm afraid it's been a very small harvest this year due to 1 particular chicken that I cant figure out how she gets out. But if they were this high... maybe they couldnt reach them!
Thanks!
Fantastic idea!
Thanks for information...
Great idea thanks
Nice
Would like to do this maybe get rid of my rose bushes and plant them by the bathroom window instead. 😔👩🌾 tired of those pesky cages. Thanks Pridget ♥️👍👍
Would love that!!
Which direction do you have the tomatoes planted? North-South, or East-West? And which side of the trellis are the planted? N,W, E, or S?? Thanks in advance!
This trellis runs East-West, and there are plants on both sides of it.
I got to get around to doing this. Also so do you just use zipties to hold it on the t bars ?
We used a PVC tee on each end. It just sits there and holds the conduit in place enough
How do I stop mice from eating allllllll my tomato’s here in San Diego! I even made a chicken wire cage and they’re still getting in
That would be a perfect way to make a greenhouse
Growing mortgage lifter, won't the weight of the fruit make them snap off when hanging?
Im in the city an have a small backyard. Can you buy smaller size cattle panels? Or any idea on what I could use to get the height..
I've only seen them in this length, but I suppose you could put the ends closer together and get more height or cut them. There are definitely other options of things to use, though.
Can you grow Better Boy tomatoes like this?
What did you use to attach the plant to the panel? Thanks!
Is that arch one panel bent over or two panels comnected at the top of the arch?
Just one big one (times 3)! They've been in place for 3 years now and still doing great
Im using tomahawk clips this year
Nice! Let me know how it goes
@@SanDiegoSeedCompany absolutely. Plan on putting the support wires up on my shade structure in the next few days to hang them from.
Or at least I'll finish the support wires when it stops raining... again... oh well, at least I won't have to water.
What was that idea you could do grapes berries blackberries strawberry I don't know about strawberries but I mean berries in general and anything else that would climb good idea
Growing vertically is so rewarding and a great use a space. Are you doing anything up a trellis right now?
I tried that last year, I'll never do that again, 🍅 cages work better, get the large ones, push one into the ground then wire tie another one on top upside down
... but cattle panels in our area are very very expensive.
How long are your panels?
How did you secure the cattle panel in the ground ???❤❤❤
A t post on each side in the middle of the panel :)
Would that work for raspberry or blackberry plants?
Awesome. What size is the mesh and where to get it? Thanks.
These are cattle panels from Tractor Supply
Any home and ranch store probably has them. We bought a smaller size galvanized horse trough and used it for oure bathtub. Great because you could soak up to your neck
♥️♥️♥️🍅♥️♥️♥️
16 ft?
How much does your climate zone matter (if at all) if you can only grow indoors?
If you're only growing indoors (light, temperature, humidity, etc. all controlled), then your zone doesn't matter at all because you're creating your own climate conditions
Great idea, but hardly anything works when you have a lot of chickens and a lot of wild birds. So this year I caged my watermelons with clothes baskets so the chickens couldn't get to them
Ah yes definitely. No advice will work best for everyone.
You can walk under it and enjoy the smell of spicy tomato plants👃
My tomatoes are hanging over my head on my cattle panels. 🙂
What's a tomato clip your cameraman sucks because I couldn't see what a tomato clip is
They're a bit tough to show since they're so small. On the side opposite the clip, there are a couple of little teeth that hold the string so the clip doesn't slide up and down. It latches closed, but you can open it up for re-use too.

I want those leggings!! Where did you get them from??
Some hippy shop in San Diego.
Great idea! I'll bet your husband thinks you're a beautiful tomato as well. 😎👍🏻
Great idea thanks
Nice
