What are the riffs that taught you guitar 😁? Thanks again to MOOER Audio for sponsoring today's video! You can check out the SD30i here: amzn.to/3rhRZgz (affiliate link)
Definitely the same number one choice you had then, I would say Deftones -- 7 words, the chugging that starts at the 1:57 mark changed things for me. I would also say the riff from A7x - unholy confessions.
I’ve been following this channel since she was learning these things. I’m a complete novice as I tried to keep up. I’ve not watched every single video, but she has evolved into a great guitarist. I think I like her evolution more than anything. You, young shines! She is the best for inspiration! 💥👍
I love that you show your learning videos and even mistakes. There are times I think I'll never grasp learning guitar then you show us the work and time you took to perfect things and that spurs me on.
I wanted to play in the jazz band in junior high. I learned to read bass clef and played bass in the jazz band starting in 8th grade. So I didn't really learn riffs at first, it was more like scales. At my first gig with a rock band I had to learn a bunch of stuff, like some Stone Temple Pilots and U2. And I've been learning ever since.
You are already adored and worshipped, but seeing you enjoy a simple digital desktop amp instead of hating on it and preaching "all tube, all the time" takes you to a whole new level of awesomeness. Thank you for all you do Shred Queen. 🤘🏾🤘🏾🔥🔥
I also taught myself everything, and videos like this help a lot, especially at the beginning, There should be a second part, or it's the start of a whole series.
So I finally come across your content and wanted to comment that it is quite enjoyable and I appreciate it. I started playing in the 1970s and don't find that I enjoy much content. You do a great job and you have a positivity and infectious charm that is just great keep up the good work
That's a fun way to think about it. I actually had a teacher for the first year, but only on acoustic guitar, electric guitar I mostly learned by myself, with tips from some lovely people I met along the way. I think, two riffs tought me just a lot about how to tackle music and playing in general. Led Zeppelins "Black Dog" was the first time I thought to myself "Damn, I can play something that sounds cool". And Chick Coreas "Spain" (especially that b-part) gave me a lot of headache with the weird rythm, but getting that finally right felt sooooo good. 😆 Oh, and basically everything by Jeff Beck tought me that I am shit at guitar. 😬
Since I started watching your videos my perspective on the guitar has changed, now I can have so much more fun in the process of learning a new song. It keeps me motivated to keep going!!
Your tutorials are so great, Rachel! Thank you! The only thing I'd recommend is mentioning the tuning for the song and also what frets and strings are being played.
My biggest inspiration to learn guitar were riffs from Paradise Lost, mainly the lead riffs from Greg Mackintosh. Mainly Jaded (beautiful lead), Eternal had an amazing but simple(ish) solo, Shadowkings (great exercise to use the 4 fingers) and Sweetness (very melodic and repetitive).. He also used a lot of vibrato which in 'Beneath Broken Earth' I really saw an improvement.
ah Shadowkings was the song that made me buy the 7 string, as even with the drop pedal I had to switch tunings to play both rhythm and lead, great excuse anyway :)
You chose some tasty riffs! And you’ve also been developing as a teacher, your description of what you learned is valuable to beginner/intermediate players…great job! 😊
I remember after a year of practicing guitar,I found out what different tunings are . Someone had the Toxicity tab book. And I learned all the songs. They weren't perfect, but it was fun. That album means a lot too me
Rumble by Link Wray was the first song I learned to play that sounded like the recording and was my first “I can do this” moment Don’t Fear The Reaper by Blue Oyster Cult taught me alternate picking Search and Destroy by Iggy and The Stooges taught me palm muting, barre chords and switching between them, and it helped build up my speed
I've played for 25+ years now and I also am self taught and never took actual guitar lessons. Tbh I don't usually recommend that others take that path lol. I started before the Internet was overflowing with guitar content and idk if that was a good or bad thing lol. Today there's infinite amounts of online instruction, some is absolute gold but...there's a lot that is misleading, frustrating and just plain predatory to trick beginners into buying things. It makes me happy to see legitimately well meaning UA-camrs like this channel. THIS is what we need more of! Great video 🎸👽. Oh! Also one of my first riffs was "1979" by smashing pumpkins. I was just messing about and figured it out on my own and was so excited haha. It's a good beginner riff imo because it uses a droning open E string and kinda showcases possibilities beyond power chords, which is hugely beneficial for new players to see.
Aerials by SOAD taught me a valuable guitar lesson. When I was just starting - I tried to play that intro many times. After all - the tab seemed so easy! But I failed and failed... Until I discovered what a dropped tuning is 😁
I started playing nov 2014 in the Corps. and I remember when you got started. I want to recommend a book by Chris Zoupa(Guitar teacher) called ultimate shred machine. Helped me and is still helping me. Keep on rockin Rachel!!!
Just found your channel and i love it. You have such an awesome teaching style and a very down to earth approach to learning guitar. My first "real riff" i learned was "Over the hills" by Led Zeppelin.
Awesome as always, and Jealous of the Ibanez Prestige S series. Still waiting on mine to arrive. I'm hopping back in to my guitar journey after first picking up the guitar 13 years ago and feel like I'm starting all over again, but there is so much more information out now with UA-cam and tabs and I am so grateful for that. Watching your journey has made me realize it's never too late to start again. Love the progress, the riffs, and being a child of the 80's, hearing Iron Maiden and Alice Cooper made me smile. I have, and continue to purchase, multiple guitars for tunings so I can play my favorites from that era as well. I still have so much work to do with getting my fingers to cooperate with stretching, but appreciate everything your channel brings! I'm amazed at how fast things go once you start catching on to specific techniques. I picked up a GTRS P800 Guitar, tuned it down to D standard, and Mooer sent me a free mini amp to go with the modeling guitar. Not a bad way to go if you're traveling. Love your work. Rock on! 🤘🤘🤘🤘
10,000 Years by High on Fire, Cowboys From Hell by Pantera, Black Dog by Led Zeppelin, Stargasm by Mastodon, and Pinnacle to the Pit by Ghost. Just the riffs, the solos are still works in progress ;-)
First songs i learned to play was probably dragula by rob zombie, freak on a leash by korn, awake by Godsmack, sugar and spiders by SOAD. I was 15 in the year 2000 🤷🏽♂️ lol
Barracuda by Heart is one of classic rock favs of all time. Would love to hear and see you play that if you haven't made a video of it before. Thanks Rachel you are awesome and so talented! 🎸🤘❤️
I love to hear what guitarists find challenging and/or interesting (inspiring) while learning and playing new songs. 🙌 I think I told you that I played acoustic when I first started playing at 15 and continued through college with Blues and Baroque. I didn't start playing electric guitar until I was 27, and I remember being very motivated while learning to play Mötley Crüe's Live Wire. The rhythm parts were fun, yet challenging to master, and I loved the short single note licks that were sprinkled into the rhythm parts. I felt accomplished when I had learned the entire song and it was one of my favorites to play at Metal open mic nights. I vote for a part deux! 🎸
would love a pt2 vid...the riffs I remembered learning which helped improve diff techniques were Sweet Child O Mine/Paranoid Android (string skipping), dust in the wind/landslide (travis picking), Master of Puppets (down picking), Basketcase (power chord switching), Old Man (rhythmic strumming), Thunderstruck (tremelo picking), and obviously Eruption (tapping)
Hi Rachel! Great video, thank you for the inspiration. Which pick do you use especially for Smells like teen spirit and the Trooper? Keep on rocking...
You also missed out on the extra 3rd fret fingering of the G string during the opening bar chord. It's not a straight bar chord though, and the addition of the G-string 3rd-fret adds a dissonance a lot of people overlook. IMHO, it's essential to capture the essence of Nirvana's "odd" tones.
MOOER's combo amp is literally just the Positive Grid Spark 40-Watt amp originally both were going for $299 but now mooer has at $289 still both are not bad deals. Still out of my price range, I'm thinking getting something like a joyo bantamp since it's at $150-189
I have no interest in learning the riffs you show in this video. I watched this video over and over because of the way you present the material. You are very easy to relate to and are very motivating. I learned techniques and tips from watching. I bought the same guitars from watching you play. I can't express how great it is every time I see that you have a new video. You have helped me so much over the years. Thank you so much.
Love your videos! On the Nirvana riff1, Any tips for balancing gain and volume when left hand palm muting? I've struggled to get this sound right for a while. A good ringout with the powerchord but also a good sounding muted strum if that makes sense. I've been tweaking with adjusting the guitar volume and pedal gain. Mixed results. My muted strum isn't perfect either. Just curious if you encountered that. Thanks!
Thanks! As a quick summary, the SD30i has way more tone/effect options and features (Bluetooth, rechargeable battery, etc.). The THR is a bit lighter weight and can also be used as an audio interface to record a clean guitar signal as well as the tone with effects. So it mostly just depends on what you are looking for/what your use case is!
Your music taste is great!😅Also, I was wondering if you learned mainly using tabs or by ear or both. I’ve been playing for about 10 months and still find it very difficult to play by ear
I've personally never really loved learning by tab, so I've mostly learned with a mix of UA-cam lessons, watching covers/live performances, and by ear. But whatever works best for you is great!
@@RachelfGuitar they are my favorites too especially for hitting a pinch harmonic, but I’ve been thinking of trying those really thick picks that’s like 7mm they look so interesting

Wait, is that a minor in the video😂😂😂. I saw your video the other day and I’m glad you confronted UA-cam and put UA-cam on the spot. I hope something comes of it I’m new to UA-cam. I’ve been on it only for about eight months now and I’m way older than you double your age, and I thought that UA-cam was for young people only and that’s why I was struggling on it. But I’m glad that you addressed the issue and confronted UA-cam. hope you succeed with what you’re trying to do, call them out on their shit. You got a great channel don’t let them bully you.
