Dylan what do you do with all this wasted food? Your grocery bill must be insane! But I am addicted to watching your catastrophies! You're so animated.😆
My upbringing tells me that waste is always to be avoided, but every one of these has a _lot_ of cheap filler in it. The gelatin aspic was probably intended to break up the monotony of soups and stews while also having much more passive food prep for the cook. It's just unfortunate that mayonnaise was invented and inevitably involved in all too many of these recipes.
Was curious about why gelatin was popular back then so I googled. This is one of the reasons I found. In the early 1950s refrigerators were still quite expensive, and gelatin needs refrigeration in order to set. So in a way, preparing a Jell-O mold was something of a status symbol. Also, it's worth noting that gelatin molds date back to the 1700s, when elaborate molds and gelatin (which was quite expensive) were seen as a way to showcase wealth, so this notion was nothing new.
That salad reminds me of the salad Aunt Bethany made for Christmas dinner in National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. So I think it’s very appropriate when Dylan compared it to cat food lmao
