Set it in the fridge to cool, but pull it out before the geletin sets and mix in a bottle of mexican coke. It has to be the mexican version because they still use cane sugar, the corn syrup version doesn't end up tasting right. Add walnuts at the end and put it back in the fridge overnight.

    • @Earthstar_Review
      @Earthstar_Review 2 роки тому +27

      My upbringing tells me that waste is always to be avoided, but every one of these has a _lot_ of cheap filler in it. The gelatin aspic was probably intended to break up the monotony of soups and stews while also having much more passive food prep for the cook. It's just unfortunate that mayonnaise was invented and inevitably involved in all too many of these recipes.

  • @SkitSkat674
    @SkitSkat674 Рік тому +50

    Was curious about why gelatin was popular back then so I googled. This is one of the reasons I found.
    In the early 1950s refrigerators were still quite expensive, and gelatin needs refrigeration in order to set. So in a way, preparing a Jell-O mold was something of a status symbol. Also, it's worth noting that gelatin molds date back to the 1700s, when elaborate molds and gelatin (which was quite expensive) were seen as a way to showcase wealth, so this notion was nothing new.

    Dylan, I have a fun story for you. My grandmother and her sister made this cottage cheese Jell-O often and it was delicious but I bet there was no Cool Whip in it. Anyway, one day Grammy didn’t have any lime Jell-O in stock and she was halfway through making the recipe. Her sister piped up and said, “let me check my purse“ And lo and behold, Aunt Frances had lime Jell-O in her purse!

    My mom makes a version with cottage cheese, whipped cream, and either orange or strawberry jello. I don't know how the lime one would taste. But I do like the orange and strawberry ones!

    On top of that, I've never heard of this recipe and it is not a true representative of Texas culture.

    The ground beef/ sky beef comment reminded me of a limerick from my childhood.
    Little birdie, flying high,
    Drops a message from the sky,
    Angry farmer wipes his eye,
    Then thanks the lord that cows can't fly.
    Always amused me 😂

      When my mother was very young, she stayed with her aunt for a few days during the school holidays. Auntie served up that "salad" and to this day (my mother is in her 70's) she still can't eat green jello or pineapple, and absolutely not together.

    Okay, but the first one with the cottage cheese is actually something my sister and I used to love, and we’d bond over making and eating together 😅
    We never put any fruit in it though, just the cottage cheese, cool whip and either strawberry or raspberry jello.

    Jello salads like the first one are actually really common where I'm from. There will typically be at least one at every potluck. I quite enjoy them, although I haven't had this one specifically, I've had others with cottage cheese and lime jello

    Lime jello with cottage cheese, and if we were lucky some canned pear slices, was a favorite in my childhood in the 60’s.
