I didn't buy my first tab until after two years of playing the game. I got my first Shaper kill without tabs. I never once felt pressured to get tabs. Which is exactly why I eventually bought them. I wanted to invest in this game and this team. To reward them for making a F2P game that let me be competitive without a single dollar invested. Another thing worth mentioning about their cash shop is that they don't have massive in game banners and popups advertising the cash shop while you play like in other F2P games. When I'm playing the game, the game just lets me play.
This comment. GGG treats you like a person instead of an ATM. I hate pop-up windows when I log into a game that basically says "Hey! You forgot to give us money!"
Free to Play, but also incredibly hard to get into. Let's be honest: PoE is the kind of game that demands literal hours of study outside of the game (guides, wikis, loot filters, etc). Depth in an ARPG is good, but this title is overengineered to the point of autism. If DIablo 4 bores you because it has the depth of a puddle, PoE will give you a headache because it's as deep as the Mariana Trench. I think a happy medium between the two extremes is the way to go. Which is why Last Epoch is the one ARPG I'm really getting invested into.
Great video man! I would also add that stash tabs are A MUST for trading. They are great for hoarding stuff, but also great for trading! People like to list their items fast from inside the game. I also want to mention that I know guys that play POE completely F2P ( for more than 1 year ); and this is because Path Of Exile is a great game!
PoE is definitely my No1 ARPG. no game in the same genre has ever come close to surpassed it Now PoE 2 draws near, I am soo hype about the future of both games
I bought guild stash tabs so I could convince friends to join and not have to worry about buying their own stash tabs. I knew they would love the game, and would eventually buy their own tabs, which they did. So now, if I ever meet any new friends that are interested in playing PoE, they can begin playing as if they already owned the "necessary" stash tabs. I consider that a great investment.
I jokingly always say Path of Exile is f2p p2w but there is some truth to this. It is subjective because there is no clear definition of "winning" but, assuming trade league is an economical race, stash tabs will allow you to be more efficient, and hence will allow you to achieve your goals faster. With this in mind, by the time you do take advantage of stash tabs (for trading and sorting), you will most likely have spent enough hours to make the investment worth it. The fact that they go on sale every 3 weeks on schedule is also a big plus. All in all, PoE is one of the only f2p games where its monetization model is not predatory. My full support. Edit: grammar
I remember starting my first proper league back in 3.16 legion. I played a couple of acts without any purchase, my "OCD" makes it ultra hard where I have to keep on arranging the tabs. Went to get the first blood starter pack and bam, some basic "hats" and enough points to get a premium/currency/map (as advised by others) and till date it's probably my most value for dollar purchase EVER. TF2/CS/Dota 2 as well as PoE/Warframe realized that the "F2P" model can give you a decent rep and end of the day it actually bags you more bands. PEOPLE JUST LOVE HATS. Of course all the stash tabs etc are making them a lot of $ BUT it's all the HATS and chest box that's really making it rain. Hopefully more companies will with this approach, it's really a win-win for both~ *Also the purchase something and get a lootbox is pretty smart too, I'm not big on hats but after finishing the points (from first blood) on all the weta purchases. It got me purchasing points again just so I could buy a weta for a lootbox (as well as for future purchases).
One way PoE can be considered truly F2P is if you play Ruthless and prefer it to the regular game. The game no longer overwhelms you with loot, maps are scarce and you can trade mostly via the trade channel.
not just the tabs, the cosmetics are always nice and are not rly worth it cause of how pricy they are but being a free to play with no subscription makes me happy to buy a supporter pack from time to time. i have prob spent a good 500$ on a free game and waiting for a good supporter pack to come out again to pick that up and a few other cosmetics im rlyy wanting.
I could also mention the seasonal lootboxes in the game. They aren’t as cheap compared to other lootbox heavy games like counter strike, but GGG guarantees that you get an item of value equal or higher in every single opening, which is pretty neat. Not to mention, if you’re a gambling addict, you could send an email for customer support about it and the game won’t allow you to buy boxes because of that, further proving that they care about the players
"Pressure to horde" ... yep, I have a ton of tabs that I never use anymore. My only excuse is that a lot of the current QoL tabs were not available when I started.
Chris Wilson has a degree in Economics. As for the F2P model itself, it comes with a serious downside: It leaves the game vulnerable to mass botting. Without even a small paywall, there is no way to stem the tide of bots and RMTers. Still, it's clear this monetization model works, at least as far as revenue is concerned. ='[.]'=
I would say that if a player beats the campaign, they are going to continue to play. The hooks have been set. At the point that a player hits endgame, there are more than just currency and map tabs that really come in handy. Delirium tab, metamorph tab and blight tab are useful if you target that content but are probably not gonna be full every league. Div tab, Unique tab and Essence tabs are necessary IMO. I couldn't get on a real grind without them.

You know how 80/20 works right, they get 80% of revenue from 20% of the playerbase so if they expand their whole playerbase by 2 or more times due to the game being free they gain more than they would from having an upfront fee, it's also good for more casual players that maybe just bought the basic pack (or not even that) that can get you the currency, map and I think 2 premium tabs (might have to be douring tab sale) and pay around 10$ instead of 30-60$ (and in D4's case still not getting the tabs).
I just bought the 20$ supporter pack. it came with a tab, and I also bought the currencies tab and the unique equipment tab. I was going crazy saving uniques for possibles alts

Yeah the necessities are thankfully pretty limited. I remember playing with just a currency, map, and regular-sized premium tab for the longest time after deciding to buy stash tabs.

I think I played first 2 seasons f2p, after I bought currency and 1 for trading it was enough for like a year, now I played 5k+ hours, and i spend total about 50 Euro, and have most stash tabs, you just need to buy it only on sales, i have few missing, so I'm spending about 1 cent/h :D
its not free id say you need a full box price 60 euro dollar minimum for some relevant boxes to store and sell items ... there is no way around that one to play in a reasonable manner in economy leagues ... but its free to start the game and get into the pay2win aspect later :D ... thhen again being a pay2win game where the max you can realisticlly benefit from is 200 euro dollar worth of box space is okay for a competitive game that brings so much new stuff each season/league
to be honest at least you can spend 60 dollars to get tabs and its been years since they added required tabs , and get the whole experience , than to have to pay per month / pay every league for new shit / or make the content have shit you can skip with real money currency , or even worse , those games where you can earn premium currency by trading it with other players basically making you a slave of their wallet
@@Buggolious theres a difference between casual and competitive level in box space ^^ with 60 euro i mean the affinity tabs that eat 5k of each essence currency and bla :D how many dumptabs you bu8y is the other story of competitive vs ssf or casuals
To be totally honest it is not the game I have spent the most money on. And to be that is shameful. It was a gotcha game, and I was the best on my serve because I play 6-10 hours a day, and spent money. Through the years I spent maybe 2000$ -_- in a Naruto Gotcha auto battler. I was depressed when I started spending the money so it gave me a feeling of accomplishment. I have spent maybe at the most 2000$ on POE, i have played since 1.0 and back we did not have fancy stash tabs, nor sales tabs :P and I did not know how to sell things.
Can easily pay nothing for people if you just enjoy doing the story and maybe a little bit of the early mapping system. I have a few friends that do that every week. I have others that complete the atlas and quit and they generally have 20 bucks or so in tabs. Then you have me with like 150+ in tabs because if we get a good league I feel good about buying a supporter pack if I happen to have the extra money that league.
Experienced could definitely play without Stash Tabs - see Lighty's latest series. New ones, though? It's 100% needed if you get into mapping, but it's well worth it.
The reason spending money on PoE feels good is because you do after you are invested on the game. You dont get that bad feeling when you pay for a 60 usd game and dropped because you didnt liked.
If you consider that PoE is insanely good and that you can play it for 2000 hours without getting bored, it is easy to justify spending over 200$ in it. By contrast, I paid 60$ for Baldur's Gate on release and I played it for 26h before quitting because I don't like the interface, and the game was ridden with bugs. I'll probably play it in a few years when all bugs will be fixed. So I actually paid 30 times more for Baldur's Gate, time wise. And even a game that I played for 200h like Elden Ring, ended up more expensive per hours than PoE. So yeah, the devs can take my money.
For MOBA games, it is kind of the game, although they are pay to win, by unlocking characters through transactions, but if you are fully free to play on them, then u pay with having a horrible time every time u boot up the game, this is the case for Smite and League (someone tell me if it is the case for Dota, i have not played it)
DotA is completely free to play. All heroes unlocked from the beginning, nothing to purchase to improve your chances in winning. Just terrain, cosmetics and voice lines are buyable but they don't bring you any advantage
Even if you consider that (and it’s arguable), if you spend 30/40$ once, you’re set for every league after that. Just pay for currency, maps and a few quad premium tabs and you’re good to go. Still half as expensive as any other AAA game.
the stash tabs you need if on sale are around 50 dollars i have 7000 hours and those tabs never filled up , i think its fair but makes the game "pay to win" unless you get them , but after that there is no convenince you can buy , but i think the fact that skins are expensive is good becuase it funds the development , and allows wales to spend more money i would wish a few older skins were cheaper though because some people would buy a set for 10-15 euros /dollars but like 50 dollars for a armour set is too much for most
I'd just like to say I bought the Voidborn pack and it feels worth it (total spent, about USD 950 over 5 years) because I have like 6k hours on it and the packs are just full of value. The fun you get from the game itself plus the fact that the supporter packs are actually full of skins PLUS points for further skins just blows overpriced crap like D4 out the window (USD 30 for a lacklustre-looking skin for ONE class, anyone?).
Ive spent hundred of dollars on POE. After D4 released and seeing their abysmal content and shoving of mtx in my face, I spent hundreds of dollars more on POE.
This is my first league. I’m 1400 hours deep. 40/40 and I have spent roughly $500 on stashes and mtx. If Diablo 4 had mtx or game content like PoE they probably would’ve got a lot more money. Good on ggg for putting the players first. I will reward that sort of game design.
"Everything for free, also here's some really cool mtx, only pay us if we've earned it." I'm not crazy about the amount some of the mtx costs but I think that business model is a big part of why some players are willing to shell it out...deciding to spend money rather than feeling forced to spend money makes it easier for players to feel good about paying.
@@TheVictor003 yeah when i first started this game i would make alt characters just to put items in their inventory xd. once i had any idea what i was doing tho it was very clear you can't play w/o a currency tab
RMT is saddly inevitable due to the free to play nature , but since trading is locked behind a premium stash tab , botters are forced to spend real money to bot and then ggg can ban them in a wave anyway
If they removed the trading aspect of the game it would be horrible. I dont really understand what you stand to gain from RMT. You get to skip the game? Also RMT doesnt really affect a normal player that much.
PoE does what no other ARPG does. Builds are entirely up to the player to make. It does not pigeonhole you into a specific skill or class with gear. You dont get a drop and say "oh i guess i am now going to use this ability". Builds can be very complex, requiring very specific rolls on pieces of gears to meet breakpoints in order to make a mechanic function differently. On top of all this build diversity, the game offers many different game mechanics in the end game to play. You can choose to never see any specific content ever again (heist) and play the game you want to play. It is free but of course you probably would want some stash tabs to make the inventory management a lot easier. This is by far my most played game ever and its well worth the money i've spent to support it.
i kept all the system message from purchases, few weeks ago got curious and did the math, £4830 spent in 10 years, i'm not impressed but not happy also and if anyone thinks that is a lot, it's not

to be honest at least you can spend 60 dollars to get tabs and its been years since they added required tabs , and get the whole experience , than to have to pay per month / pay every league for new shit / or make the content have shit you can skip with real money currency , or even worse , those games where you can earn premium currency by trading it with other players basically making you a slave of their wallet
you don't need to spend 60$, not even close
You dont get that bad feeling when you pay for a 60 usd game and dropped because you didnt liked.
had a lot of fun in poe 1 and didnt spend a dime. i will most likely be spending all my dimes in poe 2.
i brought every supporter pack since breach
GGG also provide free mtx every league as a reward for challenges completion 😊
If you consider that PoE is insanely good and that you can play it for 2000 hours without getting bored, it is easy to justify spending over 200$ in it.
By contrast, I paid 60$ for Baldur's Gate on release and I played it for 26h before quitting because I don't like the interface, and the game was ridden with bugs. I'll probably play it in a few years when all bugs will be fixed.
So I actually paid 30 times more for Baldur's Gate, time wise. And even a game that I played for 200h like Elden Ring, ended up more expensive per hours than PoE.
So yeah, the devs can take my money.
i spend more in poe than any other game i play im my life and its free to play game
think I have like 2500 hours in the game and only spent 20$ on stash tabs what value
I payed over 800 $ to ggg in the past 4 years.
PoE is the #2 ARPG behind Diablo 2, and third place isn't even in the same stratosphere as the top 2. PoE is brilliant.
D2 feels old :(
One of my first and most loved game. But after poe d2 feels much worse
Campaign is free Maping except White maps is not free u have to buy at least 1 premium stash tab witch is fair for so so so much free stuff u get
For MOBA games, it is kind of the game, although they are pay to win, by unlocking characters through transactions, but if you are fully free to play on them, then u pay with having a horrible time every time u boot up the game, this is the case for Smite and League (someone tell me if it is the case for Dota, i have not played it)
DotA is completely free to play. All heroes unlocked from the beginning, nothing to purchase to improve your chances in winning. Just terrain, cosmetics and voice lines are buyable but they don't bring you any advantage
Because their mtx cost more than a game. The game is free to try definitely not free to play. Need the stash tabs.
The best game i have ever played
Ive spent hundred of dollars on POE. After D4 released and seeing their abysmal content and shoving of mtx in my face, I spent hundreds of dollars more on POE.
Iit's kind of lazy format and I keep an eye on reddt, anyway but I still like such videos. :)
This is my first league. I’m 1400 hours deep. 40/40 and I have spent roughly $500 on stashes and mtx. If Diablo 4 had mtx or game content like PoE they probably would’ve got a lot more money. Good on ggg for putting the players first. I will reward that sort of game design.
average addict
is pay for QOL
"Everything for free, also here's some really cool mtx, only pay us if we've earned it." I'm not crazy about the amount some of the mtx costs but I think that business model is a big part of why some players are willing to shell it out...deciding to spend money rather than feeling forced to spend money makes it easier for players to feel good about paying.
GGG monetizes around the fomo and knowledge of the players, you can realistically play the game without spending a dime.
stay away from this then ok thanks
Game isn’t f2p it just has a very good demo
Probably the most popular game demo a game could offer
@@TheVictor003 yeah when i first started this game i would make alt characters just to put items in their inventory xd. once i had any idea what i was doing tho it was very clear you can't play w/o a currency tab
Poe is 100 not free
The difference is you want to donate instead of i have to
RMT free to play game more likely*
You can play from lvl 1 to 100 and kill every uber boss in the game without spending a dime. Will it be hard? Most likely, but possible.
RMT for buying gear? if you cant beat the game without buying items with real money you should be playing vanilla minecraft.
Also RMT doesnt really affect a normal player that much.
that is about every game with p2p trading
